and Kakko had to unseat Blackwell on that Panarin-Strome line first. Lafreniere won't get any help from the coaching staff. He's going to have to figure it all out on his own on 8 minutes a night with Fil and Julien.

And how's that currently working out for Kakko?

I honestly don't think like he's afraid to make a mistake, that's a narrative that's been pushed here with no basis in reality. How can a kid be afraid of making a mistake if he's never been benched for it? To me, it's more about him having to learn he can't get away with the moves he made in the Q at this level. The ironic thing is, you can still make yourself visible in hockey even if the puck isn't going into the net. It's not like being a kicker in the NFL who keeps missing, or a hitter in baseball going through a slump or something like that. All he needs to do is skate harder and play with a little more purpose. Like Kakko this year, even when he wasn't scoring, you still noticed his effort. I don't notice anything with Laff right now. There's no urgency to his game. You keep saying they have no idea where to put him, they've tried him everywhere. He's played on every line with every center. The next move is the press box. And Kakko's play is what got him playing with those better players. It's not like they put a struggling kid on a line with Panarin and Strome and he suddenly took off.

Maybe he is watching Kreider too much !

As soon as Kakko an Lafreniere become consistent top six players, there's no reason we shouldn't be really good.

Trouba has been really good this year (Not saying he's worth $8M). Have we just decided he's bad because we're locked into his play from last year?
He’s not graceful. He looks rough sometimes but he’s the perfect partner for KAM. People forget to how good he was in the Covid Cup.

everyone hates his cap hit. He’s getting paid on PP1 numbers he had one year in Winnipeg. Strome is in a similar situation, we better not sign him for something he won’t be doing.

Duhatschek notebook: Why trade deadline sellers should acquire late picks, the Calder race and more

If you’re a team selling low-budget rentals at or before the trade deadline this year and all you are offered in return is a bunch of fifths, sixths and sevenths, is it even worth the bother? The answer, according to at least one decision-maker, is yes, absolutely.

His thinking: If there’s ever a year to accumulate extra late-round picks, it is this one, on the grounds that if it truly is a shot-in-the-dark draft anyway, the more guesses you get, the greater your odds of actually turning a long shot into a gem.

The Rangers have 2 3rds, 3 4ths, a 1 pick each in the 5th, 6th and 7th.

We'll see what other moves they make, but maybe we can find a diamond in the rough. I think we did pretty well last year with the late picks we had.

He might have the worst puck skills that I've seen on a defenseman who scored 50 points in a season. However he is physical and tough to play against. Something the team needs more of.

Well. Though still not as well as it should have been and frankly, over due. Similar to how he should have gotten OT ice time last night if Quinn trusted him. Tall hill to climb for ALF, Gauthier, Chytil and Kravtsov.

Why not, it took 3 years to “unlock” from Strome’s Edmonton days.

Even with a $56,000,000 contract, Trouba would be facing bankruptcy if he ever walked into a china shop.

He's overpaid but still effective defensively, I think the disappointment comes from his cap and inability to create offense.

He's scoring 0.99 pts/60 at 5v5. That is very good for a defenseman. 39/179 dman are at that rate the last 3 years 1500+ mins played. Guys you think of as good offensive dmen like Krug, Dahlin, OEL, Yandle, Heiskaen, Keith, are below that level in that sample. His raw numbers are low because he doesn't get the PP1 time which drives all dman scoring numbers.

The Brock Nelson moment was the final straw. You can't undo a final straw.

And you wouldn't want him near PP1 or really PP2 ideally.

I think you are missing out that Kakko was previously with 10 and 16. Played with them against Carolina. I believe he started the season with them too; and he looked much better with them. Got moved off the line when he was slumping, and sHoCkInGLy now he looks better when he is back with better, veteran talent. Maybe it is that simple? You look better playing with better players?

Playing with Panarin has revitalized Strome's career, in that he's become a solidified and good middle6 playmaking center.

Strome is going to want AT LEAST $7M per. He will get it too, I can easily see a 7x7 deal as a UFA. We saw what Kevin Hayes got... even with a 'depressed' market, what does that mean for Strome? He's outpacing Hayes' production by a sizeable margin.

Unfortunately, that's too much for what he provides. Stylistically, we have too many of those players. If he was a goal scoring and/or selke-type center, it would be a different story imo. He will not be playing the right wall long term on PP1. We have Laf, Kakko and Kravtsov. So, he should not be paid as such.

Strome 50% at the TDL for a great middle6 Center Prospect. It makes it easier too, if they are confident Barron can be a solid middle6 NHL center.

Hayes was way overpaid. He averaged like what 40-45 points a season? Nothing special. Disappears during the playoffs as well.

If Strome continues this production next year, the Rangers will be in a pickle.

Does Gorton sell at the TDL?

IF you can get a player like Holloway for an extended Buch, who says no?

Trouba is a good Dman but he seems to get the idiotic Girardi treatment from the stat geeks

Well, he isn't wrong that the kids need more time, but the entitlement thing is a weird angle. Is the FO trying to somehow shame the players here by hinting at Brooks whats going on?
