Re: Goalies

Rodent had an article a bunch of years ago that made a good argument that a wildly inconsistent backup is actually much better than a "Steady Eddie" with the same overall stats.
A guy that lets in 1, 3, or 5 goals depending on the day gets you more wins than the guy giving up 3 every game. Food for thought.

I'm fine with running Georgie as a backup through next season, and if he happens to implode and have zero trade value next deadline, then fine by me.

Yeah Hiccup harry.

Problem is that this season he's had many more bad games than good.

Georgiev in net tomorrow. Doesn't really matter for me, considering Kinkaids performance wasn't exactly top notch yesterday either.

Wish we had Igor back already...

Losing a ton of 6-5 games with weird backup goaltending and getting another high lottery pick would be the second best case scenario to me after playoffs if Kakko/Laf were finding the scoresheet more.
Exactly. The way this season is going we are going to have more question marks at the end of the year than one could have imagined. Except for a couple of players, the youth on this team has struggled. KK and Laf have almost been non-existent at times and Miller has been playing lousy of late. Add in the uncertainty at center and boy is this going to be an interesting off season. I mean I have really soured on Zibs. Aside from not scoring and shooting the puck all over the place, his penchant for losing faceoffs and making turnovers is a killer. At this point I am not giving any extension a thought with him and thinking a trade for assets may be best.

why not continue to sign some of these UDFA and hopefully one pans out. always draft best talent available that can fill a need down the road like Keane for Gauthier trade.

The likelihood that a UDFA becomes a top 6 center is pretty remote. Yes, we can trade for a center, but other teams don't like to give them up. The easiest way to obtain top 6 centers is to draft them.

exactly. . I'd rather Shesty sit out the rest of the season than risk aggravating a groin injury. Kinkaid has been out of the league for over a year for a reason, and idk what happened with Georgiev , but I can deal with losing b/c of bad goaltending. I can't deal with the zero offense from these guys and the powerplay impotence. 5-4 OTL last night would have been perfectly fine if those kids were contributing

Couple notes on the hand wringing about the kids...

1) After a slow start, Shesty has been as advertised
2) Chytil has taken a step forward this year
3) Kakko is not scoring but is actually playing competent hockey like a 3rd line winger, at age 20.

The big negatives recently have been Miller and Lafreniere. I've got nothing for you on Laf, but Miller would look a lot better if we were playing him 12 minutes a night on the 3rd pairing, where a rookie of his rawness should be, instead of 24 minutes a night next to Trouba facing off against other team's good players. It's the absolute shambolic state of our current NHL defense that necessitated Miller being used WAAAY too much for his own good.

2 years down the line when we know what we have in Lundkvist, Robertson, Schneider, and maybe Jones/Reunanen, the defense should be more competent. Problem is that none of Hajek, Smith, Johnson, or Bitteto are good enough yet to take that 2nd pairing spot with Miller.

The Fox situation complicates things more.

I'd posit that minus the hype of his draft position, Kakko may just be a slow developing project. He hasn't been put in many high danger positions this season, which may be some fault of his own, but he also hasn't been gifted grade A scoring opportunities like Strome and Zibanejad have so much this year. I'm not a corsi dogmatist, but Kakko has the second best ratio behind Chytil this season, while last year he was bottom 10 at his position in the league.

Also- the fact that this roster has enough high end talent to keep our young kids away from the biggest situation minutes is gonna save us many many $$$s on their next contracts. We are one of the only franchises I can remember that had two top 2 picks but had enough high level forwards that those players didn't immediately start out in bigger roles.

But yes, Laf has stunk, and I have no solution to that one.

I think Laff needs to sit a few games. Let him watch guys like Rooney and Blackwell compete up and down the ice with a combined half the talent Laff has. I saw him joking on the bench last night, not the worst thing but not a great look when you're invisible most nights. Someone needs to light a fire under his ass.

Normally that's the coach. But instead he keeps rewarding Laf with top minutes. To be frank, between Laf's and Kakko's struggles, one clearly looks more engaged in the games than the other. Yet Kakko finds himself pinned to the bench more than the other. Why wasn't Kakko out in OT over Laf last night?

Did we discuss this yet?

Disclaimer: I absolutely do not want to move Buchnevich, but TOR does have a few very good prospects that I’d be ok with getting back in a trade. He probably doesn’t really fit Dubas’ needs as a rental with his RFA status, but he’d definitely bolster their top-6 and really make them a matchup nightmare for the playoffs.

I think the Rangers should be much more interested in trading with a team who thinks they are a contender than one who thinks they are rebuilding.

We don't really have any high profile rental forwards. Buch is on the last year of his deal, but he's RFA, so who knows if they'd be interested in him as a 'future' player, which is what would get us the best trade return.

Buch to a team planning to extend him would get a lot more than 12 games of Buch without a future plan for him.
