Can anyone tell me why people are so focused on Howden all the time. The guy is a good penalty killer, plays on the 4th line for league minimum...we're getting our moneys worth. Its asinine how people pile on guys here.
It's not Howden, it's how the coach utilizes him...

If weren't 10 points behind Pitt I would think twice, three maybe 4 times before trading Strome but if a team is offering an intriguing prospect or a first rounder you gotta do it. I really was hoping the trading at the deadline would not be a thing this year but I guess it is what it is.
Don’t worry, they’re not.

which is the least amount of ES TOI of any forward on the team...the myth of how quinn utilitizes howden and the reality of how he actually uses him are vastly different

Why do you need to come in with your facts and interfere with folks right to indulge in being unhappy and having an external target (imaginary perceived source of their unhappiness)?

So this is pretty much our pipeline right now. I bolded the guys that seem to be in long term plans and left pending FAs. Buch and Strome we have no idea what will happen, same as Zib. VK could be trade bait. I love Goat but we need to let VK play and I don't want either one wasted on the 4th line. One of Trouba/Nils/Schneider will eventually be moved. We have an embarrassment of riches at D and we have a lot of unproven Wing talent. Is it worth taking a draft pick for Strome? What are we doing with a 2nd rounder to move the needle for the future? Better off getting a prospect IMO unless we squeeze a 1st. Then we have to decide are we moving our D for a 1c or 2c. We can't keep them all. If we grab a 1C then Zibanejad is likely gone. I think Chytil can easily be our 2C next year. Maybe best case scenario is move up for the best Center within reach next draft whether that;s trading our 1st and a prospect or whatever Strome nets us. Just thinking out loud with what to do. It's time to start making moves this offseason and figure out who we are. But we certainly don't need extra picks to add to the log jams.

Jones + VK can net us what Center prospect? I really like VK but Buch has earned top line for us and we need Laf and Kakko getting as much ES/PP time as possible. Heck maybe add in Robertson if we can get guys like Hajek and Bitetto to look solid or sign a vet each year like Smith.

Kravtsov is wasted on the 4th line.

Howden needs to sit in favor of Rooney.

Blackwell - Rooney - Gauthier is a solid 4th line.

Mika having a terrible start to the year may work in our advantage.

Do we extend him this offseason for 3-5 years? How much? $7M? Flat cap for another 3-4 years would have his contract eat up 2-3 of those years. 3 year extension at $7M? Would he take it? Honestly seems to benefit both sides. We don't get locked up long term with Mika at a crazy figure, he gets security until things 'normalize'. Another UFA contract at 31-32 years old for him where some other team can overpay.

The league's economics/market is in a crazy place right now. There needs to be some form of price discovery and something tells me, Gorton wont be that guy after what happened with ADA.

That’s exactly what I would do with Mika. Whether he actually accepts that is an entirely different story. I’m expecting him to have a big rebound year next season.

There's going to come a point when players realize the dire straights of the market. No one is going to be getting paid as they have been. The market has crashed.

Bridge him 2 years /5 mil

On top of all that, how many teams are actually interested in adding any size able contracts to their payroll for the foreseeable future?

I honestly don't know if the Howden stuff is overblown.

He has been having tremendous difficulty simply handling the puck this year. It's not puck luck that has kept him off the scoreboard this season, that's for damn sure.

The difference between Rooney and Howden (after the first half dozen or so games, where Howden actually looked quite good) is extremely noticeable. Maybe none of those other lower tier guys are able to do as good a job on the PK; but with how bad he has been at even strength, I think it should be worth trying it out at least.

Had slim hope and I mean slim that Howden could be a decent 4th line center. Forget about his puck skills he just doesn’t have the quicknesss/skating ability to get in on the forecheck. If he ever does get the puck forget about it. The play simply just dies on his stick

For real. People act like PKing is some rare skill.

We are going to have 15 forwards with Kravtsov. 4-5 of the 15 should be competing for 4th line minutes. Rooney, Howden, Lemieux, PDG and Blackwell.

Quinn likes Blackwell's pitbull mentality with Panarin and Strome. What does that mean for Kravtsov and Gauthier? 3 players vying for Panarin's RW? A lot of scratches.

Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Panarin Strome Gauthier/Kravtsov/Blackwell
Lafreniere Chytil Kakko
PDG/Lemmy/Howden/Rooney/Blackwell

We may have too many forwards. There's essentially 4 spots ( 4th line and Panarin's RW ) for 7 players.

Best move might be to send Howden down to get some good minutes in the AHL. Scratch PDG because he doesn't do much or bring anything different.

Little change of subject here. But now that we have some hindsight, and with todays news of JMFJ on waivers. Here is how the rangers have utilized their Dmen so far this year:
Fox 26GP
Lindgren 26GP
Miller 23GP
Smith 19GP
Trouba 18GP
Hajek 16GP
Johnson 13GP
Bitetto 9GP
TDA 6GP

Even with Trouba being out with a broken thumb for a few weeks and TDA being sent to sit on a couch, Jack Johnson is 7th on the team in games played. All the commotion about JJ being an anchor for this team was much ado about nothing

Howden is going to be out of the league and playing in the AHL or overseas in the next couple of years. The issues are both his play and his usage.

Yup. Once we ditch him another NHL team will pick him up. As soon as that team realizes he is not NHL type he'll be off to Europe somewhere. SHL or KHL.

If I'm Mika I write off this year. Bounce back in a big way next year and hit free agency. Let the bidding begins.
