He's good, but he makes a lot of the same errors as a lot of the more metric-obsessed posters around here.

Like implying that since passes have a higher goal rate on a 2 on 1, the holding player should always pass. That kind of thing ignores the nuance of the situation, the players involved, the position of the players coming down the ice, and 30 different factors that matter when making the decision to pass or shoot.
Just look at the malkin 2 on 1 last night where he forced the pass and lindgren picked it. Those stats are useful but they require context as does everything in life..

And it's irritating because a large number of people have taken these metrics and view them as the absolute gospel in terms of player performance evaluation. They are a useful tool, but an incomplete picture, just like any other statistic.

And evaluating any single game for a player is extremely stupid, given how much random error there is going to be in such a small sample size.

It makes more sense in a game like baseball where each event in controlled and trackable such as a pitch count, pitch type, location, matchup, etc. Hockey is such a different animal and just off its nature you need to mesh eye test with paper stats. Both are extremely valuable when used together.

It's not based on year to year, it's based on a projected massive increase in the new TV deals. Not from my own speculation.
That does not change the fact that I do not recall even a short period of time in which NHL tv revenue tripled.

Just get rid of Quinn. This team is embarrassing. There is no identity. You never know what you’re gona get from night to night. I get we are rebuilding, perfectly ok with that. But these are NHL players and the Coach cant get them to give a consistent effort. The PP has been a disaster, not one change seems to be made in the approach. Overall its a constant chip and chase and lose the chase, let alone the battle outside of a few players. And lastly it comes down to personnel management. Howden should have been scratched a long time ago. He should be in the AHL. And the Coach just cant see that, he cant identify that. He is the problem. He has no answers during every postgame. Just sounds defeated all the time and that type of look transcends on down to your players.

Get rid of Quinn and then we can talk about everything else

I think at the very least this jeckyl and hide performances of the club from night to night aren’t going unnoticed from management. I do think they will give him the benefit of a doubt though. Those beantown boys stick together. It sucks because watching the pens offensive was brutal. It’s the exact scheme this team would be good at with all the speed and talent on the roster

Larkin is more on the level of a Monahan for me than an Eichel. He’s be a nice add for sure but I’m not giving up multiple A pieces for him.
First rounder and one more guy like Hajek-Lemieux-Gauthier ..... I would not overpay for him for possibly limited time in NY moving forward....I prefer a coaching change first and foremost before we start tearing a roster apart . I have to wonder how much better then Strome is Larkin ?

I’m not even sure what to think or say at this point. We were all feeling pretty good coming off of a little winning streak against the bottom of the league’s barrel, but I said prior to these Pens’ games that they would be a better measuring stick for this team. They came up short big time obviously, but I’m not sure what needs to be done other than getting a more experienced coach in here.

I think I’m finally onboard with the contingent that has been writing this season off as unprecedented. It’s really unfortunate because this was supposed to be the “feel it out and make some tweaks” season, but given the circumstances that can is getting kicked down the road until at least next year.

I hesitate to make any significant roster moves because I don’t know that this season and all of its abnormalities are giving us a clear picture of who these players really are. Things I am confident about include:

1. Eichel not being the answer.
2. Howden and JJ needing to be let go.
3. Holding onto Chytil for dear life.
4. Not trading Lundkvist until they see what he can do at the NHL level.
5. Needing to find some physical but still skilled players to diversify the forward group.

Solid post....but forgot one minor detail....Fire Quinn !!!

He's one of the four primary penalty killers, that's why.
But he's the worst of the bunch.

Rangers need to test Igor Shesterkin's limits after injury

Howden recorded four goals in his first 17 NHL games. Since then, he’s scored 11 goals over the next 142. He is, at age 22, a fourth-line center who kills penalties. And though he has been one of the club’s go-to forwards on the penalty kill in pairing primarily with Kevin Rooney, Howden has been on for the most power-play goals against, with six in 49:16 of shorthanded time.

(Rooney has been on for five in 41:34 while Ryan Strome has been on for one PPGA in 29:01, Chris Kreider one in 17:07, Mika Zibanejad three in 56:25 and Pavel Buchnevich three in 60:10.)

Stevie Y is shrewd. He knows by the time they are competing, Larkin will be a UFA. Timing doesn't add up.. Better to spend his value now for players of the future instead of losing him for nothing/getting a rental return. In the process, you can suck really bad next year and get Shane Wright.

Same thing for Mantha

At the same time, he did go out and sign Filpulla and Callahan to take heat from the kids in Tampa.

Larkin isn’t Yzerman’s guy, but he does fit the bill for someone that will take on a big role and shoulder responsibility.

For all the bitching about howden in here, lets be serious and realize that he is the least of the issues with this team right now. We all are frustrated with him and the time he gets, but when your 3rd string goalie is starting a game for the first time in years and you need to rely on him to keep you in the game rather than coming out with fire and effort you have much bigger issues than Brett Howden...

Was just about to post this. I don't like Howden but he isn't the reason we are losing so many games.

“It’s a decision we made as an organization,” Quinn said Sunday after practice. “In 24 hours, we’ll be able to probably be a little bit more specific and address the situation differently.”

On one side you got the coach that can’t wait to launch the smear campaign when it won’t hurt the team.

On the other side it’s not so fun for the players.

Ryan Strome (after Panarin bolted):
It definitely feels like it’s par for the course the way things have been going the last little while…one crazy event after another…we’ll take our time with this and go day by day. We have a job to do, but at the end of the day these are our teammates and brothers.

Larkin's speed game is elite. Would rather add him at lower dollars on an extension than Eichel. I'd give up this years iat rounder (top 5 proteccted) one of the young d and Tony D or Buch for him. Strome would be ideal if Yzerman would take him back.

Larkin isn’t getting moved so it’s not an option
