So there's no chance we can draft Shane Wright. Got it. Well, what about if we trade for an unprotected first rounder and win the Lottery that way?

You sure you want this, NHL?

This is all because Detroit got 4th last year. Now the last place team can't finish worse than 3rd OA, that would have given Detroit Byfield or Stutzle at the very worse. It creates a floor for the worst teams as to how far they can fall. I'm fine with it, I hope we won't be touching the lottery by 2024 draft anyway. This gives us every opportunity still to win one even if every middling team is down to 2 lotto spots instead of 3.

the prior year ottawa had the worst record and also dropped to 4th but traded away the pick...

there is no perfect solution to the draft lottery because there is no way to separate the teams tanking on purpose and the teams that are legit bad...if anything the lottery did EXACTLY what it was intended to do and didn't reward the red wings for tanking and not even trying to field a competitive team.

the new way will last 1 year before people complain about that...if the team with the worst record gets the pick people will say its encouraging tanking. if someone else gets it they will say its not fair...the only time anyone likes the lottery is when their team wins, then its just fine.

Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers have been disasters from the start. They cant give tickets away.

For whatever reason Ottawa hasn't been able to establish a foothold either because of how insanely popular Toronto and Montreal are all through Ontario,
For Ottawa too the fact that their arena is in Kanata hasn't helped.

past drafts don't count....we start with zero previous wins according to reports

The NHL is an example of the tail wagging the dog. McDavid was the last straw because teams were tanking and getting generational players. Detroit tanks and doesn't get a generational player, so we have to fix it.

Know what no one references during this cry therapy session? The 2017 draft. New Jersey and Philly jump the line and walk away with Hischier and Nolan. Colorado gets denied an opportunity to draft a franchise altering player and have to settle on Makar.

Give Bergeron and Yzerman high picks and they go off the board anyway. This is just a contest to win a bingo game. Fans obsessed with being given a participation trophy and acting like they earned something. The smart teams should let the turd magnets go first to weed out the busts.

If the NHL really wanted parity, they'd set each team's salary cap limit based on their previous season's performance.

This would, of course, be ridiculous, but you would certainly have parity.

this would not be parity at all...possibly the opposite of parity. the poor teams would spend even less to field bad teams so they can don't have to spend as much the next year.

Sorry.. But there's no way of stopping teams from tanking.
I mean..JG literally sent a personalized letter out to the entire world stating that he was doing exactly that then trashed the entire team.

#1 and #2 OA followed shortly after

I'm still trying to figure out who has the biggest mouth..ADA, Panarin or Jeff the clown Gorton

I’m unsure who’s going to offer Mika a long term deal in a place he’ll actually want to move to from NYC but I guess we’ll see. If this crazy down year wasn’t happening I’d say he’s as good as gone but I’m not sure now.

I agree with not moving Chytil but imo that means not getting Eichel. That’s fine by me, but there’s no deal for Eichel around Mika imo.

Nah tanking is just plain dumb. You literally create the atmosphere and culture for losing. It don’t work like video games in real life.

Agreed but you're witnessing it first hand.
On top of that..The team is handcuffed right now with all the stupid signings..

I always thought they should just not have rules and give the first overall to the team with the worst record. Radical idea, I know.

And when they did that, everyone complained Ottawa tanked on purpose to get Daigle (which wasn't really false either).

And before that, it was how Quebec was the Edmonton of its time, just stockpiling young talent and not doing jack shit in the standings.

Thirty years of trying to "fix" the draft. Can't wait to see what's proposed 10 and 15 years from now.

lmao, as long as Edmonton kept winning it was fine, I guess.

Question: What exactly is the argument against doing the draft order by having teams accumulate points from the day that they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs? It sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

This idea has always intrigued me.

The first team eliminated has the inside track on the 1OA, but full on tanking has you picking like 6th.
"The team with the 3rd worst record due to bad injury luck, but gets everyone back from injury although way too late to make the playoffs" would actually have something huge to play for over the last few weeks of the season.

It's a much more fair anti-tanking measure than a "pick a card, any card" lottery.

So what were the changes surrounding the draft?

none, too much legal and logistic trouble to go through. It'll be more of a crapshoot than other years but 32X7 rounds later the same kids are going to be drafted anyway.

These changes are not just because of the Rangers getting 2 high picks. Since the new lottery rules there have been 7 picks won by teams outside the bottom-5 in 5 drafts.

WPG 6>2
DAL 8>3
PHI 13>2
CAR 11>2
NYR 6>2
CHI 12>3
NYR 11>1

They implemented this new system 6 years ago to prevent teams from tanking. It worked, a little too well. And now they have to steer in a different direction. But to think this is just to screw over the Rangers is ridiculous.

The current method is totally fine and I assume if they change it (because of getting mad at the Devils/Rangers, or because of behind the scenes politics) they'll change it back within 10 years. It benefits the worst teams in the league without being something you can game.

Kind of funny how Fenton was thrown out like a garbage bag full of diaper because he inspired no confidence but the initially criticized Fiala for Granlund deal has worked out well and the Lizard Zucc signing is also looking great so far.

I think the Rangers made out pretty well.

Covid kinda derailed them from a playoff the wouldn’t have won

Winnipeg won the lottery

Rangers get Laf

That trade was great when it happened and even greater now.

I don't think most people think it's to screw over the Rangers.

I do think it being the Rangers lit a bit of a fire under the league's ass --- and they're not necessarily the only team that would've done so.

But I don't think you see this sense of urgency, especially with all the problems the league is facing, if Nashville wins.
