Gaborik was a pariah. Zibanejad is beloved and awesome. What are we doing here?

Disagree. If two players are similar and one can fight ill take the fighter every day.

I'm not arguing your point, but I am interested in what "can fight" actually means in this context. Is willingness? Is it ability to not get KO'd? Is keeping your feet and hugging enough? Does landing a few helmet hits before losing your feet count?
Do you need to be able to consistently draw blood? Last in a rock-em sock-em style 80s type fight?

Strome isn't a fighter but he looked ok when he had to against someonein his weight class. I don't think Smith is much of a fighter but by God he's willing. Ditto Matt Barnaby back in the day.

Chara is 90.

I really couldn't care less about records in fights. I don't understand why people do.
Because it matters when we're sending f'n Colin Blackwell to send a message to a team. Because you don't understand it doesnt mean its not relevant. Theres a reason Marchand has been able to play bigger than his frame throughout his career, its because he knew he could. It matters.

Gaborik was a pariah to you, maybe. Not to most ranger fans
And to the team that dealt him for Brassard, Moore, and Dorsett (not exactly a kings ransom) and yet it was a brilliant trade in the moment and in hindsight.

How much do you love Zibanejad at 7 years by 8.5-9 mill? I think thats the bigger problem considering his concussion issues

HELL NO!!! Zibanejad Can’t win a face off and disappears again any top 10 centers.. he doesn’t finish his checks and a zero for a leader. The only way he will remain successful is if he has some serious muscle to protect him..

I’ve been saying it for like 2 years but pls for the love of God get ZADOROV. Blackhawks are up against the cap bad and he’s going to be available

@0:47 <— watch that and tell me you don’t want that guy on this team lol

He is one of the most beloved players too, he has a huge personality

Im sold. Definitely one of those "will over skill" guys that the Front Office has alluded to. Hed look real nice playing 3rd Pair next to Jones or Lundkvist

It means he can take on anyone on the other team, his teamates play bigger because they know he's got their back. Its a thing no matter how much people wanna dismiss it. The fact that we had Blackwell, Rooney and PDG out to send a message must have made the caps laugh their faces off, and then Smith has to go fight someone over his weight class. Wilson knew the minute he grabbed Panarin nobody was gonna do anything, he basically mocked our whole bench from the penalty box.

I can't believe how many of you are against trading for a legit 1C superstar at 24 years old. It's actually crazy.
I’ve never seen a board slam or look for any negative then can on a proven 40 40+ center who could get better here with more talented guys. The neck injury is for sure a concern, price is definitely an issue I’m not saying get him at all costs, but if he wants out we’d be dumb not to pursue it seriously. Your getting him for 5- 6 years in his prime. The end of the deal takes him to freakin 30 not 35 or 37
Could he fail? Yes or he could take the next step and be 100 pt center here for years. American east coast kid all his life. Proven talent all that. If he comes back from the neck injury and shows no signs of decline I bet the rangers get him by the end of next season or the draft. Not this years draft. The following. He wouldn’t and shouldn’t be a captain here but him and LaF or him and panarin on the same line would be straight filth

Yeah, Marchand has lasted 10 years because somebody on his team fights somebody else. Like, what's the connection?

I like Oleksiak. I think he's a good defender who's solid along the boards and great in front of the net. If we don't get Nemeth I would absolutely sign him.

But now we're going back into the hole of deterrence and "winning fights wins hockey games." You notice fights don't even happen in the playoffs?

It does not have to be trade just vets for youth, or youth for vets, it possible it takes a couple different trades and they end up with a similar amount of youths and vets.

The youth, I wish I knew which ones I really liked. To this point other than Fox, Shesty, Lindgren, for me, I really don't know.

I like portions of what I have seen from Laff, Kakko, Krav, Miller, Jones, Chytil, Barron. Yet if I am being honest, differentiating between their draft status, the up and down play from all of them, wanting to see them all succeed, it's pretty impossible for me to say I'm sure they have what "it" takes, or not.

The vets to me is a much easier read, I just don't really feel any of them have "it" whatever "it" may be. The only one I feel may have "it" is actually Buchnevich out of that vet grouping.

Then to me there is a whole other grouping which includes Blackwell, Rooney, Hajek, Howden, etc where they are cheap, they are depth or maybe find a spot on the peripheral yet I'm not necessarily keeping or sending them packing just to replace them with something way more expensive or long term unless it's a clear upgrade where that brings in something I am confident will not be on the peripheral.

I am actually okay with some real wholesale changes, I am not really all that attached to many of these players. Does not mean I want them all gone or anything, more so it just seems like there is a lot of options I'd be willing to consider.

I honestly don't even care who we acquire as long as it means Libor Hajek never sees another minute on defense. Pick someone out of the stands and they might be better.

So willingness and balance mainly over actual ability to throw a punch (noting that Wilson never has to fight anyone if he so chooses)?
I mean how many 'good' fighters that can go with anyone and actually intimidate, but can also skate a regular shift are there in the league (again, legit question as I don't pay enough attention)?

It comes back to the earlier question conversation about 'toughness'. It seems what we really want is a team that doesn't take a backwards step, and what the team most likely needs is a willingness to go and an understanding that everyone will go when needed. That's not so much a skill as a mindset and an attitude.
Add Trouba, Lindgren, Kreider, call it one more rugged bottom 6 forward (willing but not overly skilled) to the Caps debacle, but alter the mindset rather than the skillet. How far off a tough team are we then?

In that same vein, Zibanejad to Minnesota for Joel Eriksson Ek, Hartman/Foligno, and a pick would be a nice return to me. Assuming we then turn around and trade for another top center.

I keep coming back to MIN as a trade partner. They are in desperate need of Centers, and have a number of guys (Foligno, Hartman, Greenway) who would be able to fill the "tough to play against" role in the bottom 6. Foligno in particular is a guy who has been rumored to be of interest to the NYR when he was in Buffalo

Anyone who has played knows the value of a guy who will step up when things get ugly. It makes the group bigger as a whole, players will do things they might not normally do. Its a thing. I don't want a thug who can't play but a guy like Olesiak who can defend, has some offense and can also be an enforcer is the type we should be after, especially after this last week vs the isles and Caps.

Agreed, I see them as a really good trade partner in a Zibanejad deal.

That’s why I’m clamoring for goodrow. He can play 3rd or 4th line. Actually play hockey. Does all the rough stuff and if Barron has trouble with face offs goodrow can step in and take them. He actually wins them too. He can play all 3 fwd positions. Guy would be an amazing get for this club.
Like it or not when ADA was a prick on the ice, the whole team played with more passion. Goodrow also helps in that department. Sign him asap
