In all this I have to agree about our leadership core. It’s a joke that Zibanejad has been touted as our de facto captain for years. The guy doesn’t have an intense bone in his body, he is the prototype of the milquetoast Ranger of years past. He may have oodles of skill but he isn’t someone who lives & breathes hockey, he very often seems to not even give a f***. Kreider is the same way. Kreider & Mika are both big guys who are strong, but they wouldn’t stand up for their teammates and let them get face washed, pushed around, and don’t demand accountability from either the opponent or from their teammates. There is something rotten in our locker room, and I think a large part of it is from the cavity left by Hank & Staals departure.
Probably Fast and Zucc too, to be honest.

Smith got demoted then fought a teammate.
Yet he'll be on the 2nd line next week.

Bro.. There's something wrong going on here.

It's up to you if you'd like to recognize that or not

There is absolutely something wrong going on here . That "thing" is Tony being unable to keep his personal business out of the locker room. The guy went from someone the Rangers fronted their social media presence with, top powerplay minutes, and very well liked teammate to being warned he was going to be WAIVED if he didn't keep himself in line. The "thing" here is Tony's inability to shut up and play hockey. He went from organizational asset to outcast in a matter of weeks because of his own antics. The team gave him an ultimatum and he still couldn't stop causing friction with his teammates.

You can choose to believe there's some sort of mysterious agenda driving all of this but the facts are pretty cut and dry.

Fast maybe with his demeanor and work ethic but Zucc definitely not sturdy enough to be that kind of a presence. He was mentally checked out for his final 2 years with us just about.

Fast likely was respected as a leader by example. I am sure Mats was well-liked in the locker room, even if he checked out for that span while a pending FA.

Was Kreider really on the ice near Kakko when he was getting face washed? I honestly don't recall, but if that's true it infuriates me.

Fast and Zucc are different cases, the minute Zucc signed that contract with Minnesota I was fine with him leaving. I'm pretty sentimental with this stuff but come on.

I would argue that the things he’s been accused of have nothing to do with his performance. It’s ok to have people rustle some feathers. All teams need it. Or you can just have Kreider and be vanilla

kumbaya

If you can't see the difference between "rustling feathers" and being so abrasive that you get a team to put a top-5 offensive defensemen on waivers, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Not technologically savvy but here’s a tweet from a former Ranger. A star who actually played in the league

“After watching last night game against a bigger more physical well coached team , the Ranger organization needs to really understand moving forward that playing nice hockey with too many soft players is not going to take you deep in the playoffs ! Or in it”
Who said this?

I'm just saying, you subtract a number of the people everyone likes/looks up to in the locker room, and shit like this is bound to happen.

lots of interesting stuff in here and interesting to hear about Staal’s thoughts on the situation.
I thought DeAngelo’s agent did a masterful job giving Brooks the exclusive, coaching Tony on what to say and managing the narrative around Sarnia, racism and social media. Contrite, apologetic and willing to wear the problem. I’m glad to hear that there was no issue whatsoever with K’Andre and nice to see Staal called as a character witness.

Of course, there’s another darker side to the story.

It. just feels so canned to me.

There are three camps
Tony was cancelled because of his politics
Tony was waived because of his immaturity, antics, and temperment
Tony was a racist and a bad person and there could be so much more details that we don't know yet about potential hate crimes

most people have settled on the second but are arguing against either people on the 1st or the 3rd. I'm glad Tony got to say his piece for the record to clear up rumors and his trade is going to be easier with Staal quotes and some responsibility taking from Tony. Let's move on and get back to focusing on blaming Quinn for all of this team's problems.

Again.. After listening to his podcasts.
He's never pushed a narrative and was quite frankly a really cool dude.

I've never heard him bring politics into ANY hockey convo so during those podcasts so I call bullshit..

In games like that you have to score on the powerplay, or at least get a little momentum and make the PK/goalie bust their asses like the Bruins were able to.

I don't think of this team as physically soft considering where the NHL is now - they seem like they hit a lot, they protect the crease, most of their goals are grinder goals - but mentally, sure. You've got a mix of bottom six/depth guys who are playing well, young guys who are learning the ropes, and vets off in la la land. I think they need one of those freak games where they score like 7.

Lol there were articles referring to his podcast as “a controversial podcast about Trump & politics” and The Hockey News said in a video even if we set aside the fact that he supported the storming of the capital

The later is a libel level claim lmao, and as someone who’s listened to every podcast he hasn’t mentioned politics ONCE. It’s literally all sports.

I am impressed by the knowledge people on a message board have about the inner workings of a locker room that no one has access to.

OR..Maybe some of us have just been around long enough, are still actively play hockey, talk to some players and kind of know what's going on?

And probably the most bland/plain takes on sports as well. I liked when he had Lemieux on but I didn't like when him and his boys talked about sports.

Who would even be a target for a player with an edge that can lead a team through the postseason. I don’t think there’s even someone that would fit our time frame.

Yes your experience in men’s league locker rooms is very relevant.

Nevermind, don’t care. I’m a rangers fan, if Tony’s no longer a part of the team, I have less than zero interest in discussing him.
