They tried to trade him last year. He cleared waivers. He was a RFA last summer, if he wanted to sign in Europe, he could have. Unless they made a promise to him I’m not aware of I can’t see what they did wrong. They probably have 36 skaters they’d rather get a look at in camp than him.

I'm not questioning it as a lack of opportunity like some CNN viewer. I'm questioning why even gave him the contract. The only thing Ho-Sang was good at is skating the puck up the ice. Everything else about his game doesn't translate well to winning.

I mean in someways I’d imagine this is also Lou’s way of sending a message, if I don’t like you as a player I’ll bury your career.
Thus reminding everyone in the nhl both how big an ass he is, and also ensuring that players do what he wants.

Granted the young man got a bump in pay. I'm not advocating for Ho-Sang to miss out on making more at the AHL level but the optics are poorly handled. In other professions, moves like these are not a good look.

What do you mean "why give him the contract?" If he didn't like the offer he could have just not signed it. He could have signed an offer sheet with someone else for zero compensation if they/he were interested.

I would have liked Chara but we might just have to take our lumps until we get over the cap hump . It is exciting ...the start soon of a new beginning for the Rangers . I know Lafreniere will be a star...but if Kakko can make that step onto the main stage.....we are cooking with gas . Enjoy the ride fellow Ranger fans , it could be a beautiful 10 years of hockey for us . As a 50 year fan of these guys....it is hard to contain my enthusiasm .

I’m assuming they qualified him because they wanted to keep his rights to protect themselves in case he breaks out before he turns 27. Then he filed for arbitration, which made sure that he was getting a contract from the Islanders.

Random thought out of left field, but I wish NYR had offered Bracco a contract.

Lou has made it clear he would go scorched earth if another team ever offer sheeted one of his players.

first i'm sure he'd be talking about an offer sheet to a good player like barzal not a bum he doesn't even want on his team.

second what is he gonna do? if he had the cap space to return the favor he would be able to sign his own guys before they got offer sheeted

who knows if they end up going this route, but MacEachern > De la Rose wouldn’t be horrible waiver wire pick-ups.

This is one of the oft-repeated narratives about offer sheets that is almost certainly not true. Was Carolina's response to the Aho offer sheet to go scorched earth on Montreal? No, it was basically saying "Thank you for negotiating our contract for us." Teams aren't going to retaliate because that essentially means "making suboptimal decisions in order to hurt other teams rather than trying to improve your team" If someone wants to offer sheet one of our guys in a few years they are welcome to do so and we can just match the deal. They're not going to vastly overpay on the offersheet because then that leaves them exposed to too much risk if it isn't matched.

Ah well if the player filed for arbitration, then it's a different story. My question is still around as to why qualify him to begin with. Still a moot point.

my first question for these guys is can they kill penalties...maceachern didn't last year, de la rose did a bit but that doesn't mean that they can't given the chance.

we really don't need live bodies in the bottom 6 so if we are looking to grab a depth guy off waivers or whatever these are the criteria that i'm looking for

1) can kill penalties
2)proven veteran leadership to a young team (ideally with playoff experience
3)can win faceoffs

MacEachern is a forechecker, I believe DLR is decent defensively and in the circle.

Both are no more than depth. I think they'd get claimed by someone if on the waiver wire, I don't know that they'd substantially improve our bottom six. Both qualify for expansion exposure.

The 58D level chess move is to make a deal with Calgary for Monahan and then flip Monahan for PLD. Jarmo would technically be trading PLD out of the division, so it shouldn't be an issue for him.
Why would anyone trade PLD for Monahan?
