It's been reported 20 teams reached out to Chara. It's possible that he decided that Washington has a better chance at a Cup than the Rangers do.

I know he probably doesn’t have much left but I would have loved to see Chara dish out some nastiness on our blueline especially over JJ. Also mentor some of our young dmen. I’m guessing he really doesn’t have much left if Boston let him go for under a million
Chara maybe didn’t want to sign in NY. But man signing for that amount, less than Jack Johnson, makes me cringe more about the JJ signing

Luckily for me I only have a specific team to be into in hockey and then all the other sports I'm content with just not liking a bunch of teams, really keeps the mood at least mostly level
They're still better than the Rangers.
But they're on the downswing for sure so I don't think the comment I made above is going to be valid for much longer.

This is a good point. That said, if a guy is legit being stifled, he needs to do his thing. But therein lies the rub.

i think a team looking for a potential last run is the right fit. Rangers are likely not that team yet will unfortunately see him a lot with this Covid Schedule.
Let's see how their goaltending holds up. You have some goalies that let in an extra goal every 20 shots in the league, and some match-ups exacerbate this. Will be interesting to see how things unfold in WSH. I don't see a true contender when a goalie sports a situational save percentage that gives up an extra goal every 20 shots when that situation accounts for 30-35 minutes of ice-time every game.
Holtby is gone, so if WSH gets an upgrade in net, then they should be back in that contender saddle. SJ is another example. Great team, great underlying numbers, but the goalie was so bad, that over the aggregate those figures are intolerable imo. You can have guy who is a lock for giving up an extra goal every 12-17 shots and bet on not making the playoffs. I'm not sure how many of these analytics experts out there that can really contextualize how disadvantageous this is, cause I've never seen it out there in the public domain.
Until I see WSH's goaltending improve, I don't expect them to contend. Chara will help however. I'd short BOS for this year. Just don't see how you can shelter Grezlyk anymore. Those great public possession numbers Matt had were because of how BOS used Chara. I'd expose the shit out of Matt Grezlyk. If he's in the D-Zone, throw it over him, and make him battle, get him net front and make him stop you... then watch the breakdowns take place. I'd also expect their PK to go downhill.

What more can the Rangers do exactly? Im sure they explored possible trades. They signed all their RFA's, Traded Staal to free up cap space, bought out Lundqvist. They also had to account for signing bonuses. They tried to do as much as they can given the cap and dead money. They will be in a better position next year.
