I'm not married to this guy. I actually think Howden is going to have a decent career but I expect he'll play for several NHL teams before it's over. So I expect the Rangers to move on from him someday and finding a replacement should not be that hard.

I don't like the worst player language. I never have. Every team in the league has players who are Howden equivalent or on the cusp of NHL careers without high upside. It's not like God above has specially picked the Rangers to always have the worst player(s). To me it's a cheap way to target a player and getting others to go along with you is negative and destructive group think. Our team is going on the upswing and there is so much to be positive and optimistic about right now. Better to focus around that and quit scapegoating guys all the time. If we need to find another home for Howden I don't think it will be that hard and I think there will a number of teams interested.

Out of 334 forwards who played 500+ mins last year here are Howden's ranks in several categories.

CF60: 316
CA60: 332
CF%: 332
SF60: 311
SA60: 324
GF60: 274
GA60: 304
GF%: 312
xGF60: 312
xGA60: 328
Pts/60: 294

So it's not really true to say every team has players like him. He's near the bottom in almost all of these categories. Several of which he was 3rd to last. The one's he slightly less off the bottom are one's that include more variance (goal-related stats) He's not a scapegoat. He's just been terrible. Maybe he'll get better but I don't see it. Kakko's numbers were similarly bad but you see flashes of skill plays that make you think there might be something there as he gets older and more experienced. You don't get that with Howden. He's living off a reputation of being a first round pick, a hard worker, and being a key piece in the McDonagh trade.

Every team has replacement-level players or worse, that much is true, but not every team has players below RL that coaches adore because they have to work twice as hard just to exist in the NHL.

Howden has games where he plays 17 minutes. That's the problem.

Exactly.

Fans don't have a problem with Howden playing on the 4th line. It's the games where he is playing top-6 minutes that are the issue.

Howden is going to have an NHL spot sewn up as long as Quinn is here because they bonded over breakfast every day his rookie year lol

For the sake of clarity I do have a problem with him playing on the 4th line and I really have a problem with the games where he plays top-6 minutes. He played over 15 minutes 24 times which is insane.

If he plays 7-9 minutes, I doubt Howden would be criticized as much as he is.

But that's not a Howden problem. That's a Quinn problem.

Not so sure about that. Haley, Glass, and McLeod all got criticized the same playing closer to those minutes.

But, yes, of course that is a coaching decision and is not on him.

I agree with you. I'm not keen on him on the 4th line either. But I do think it's a smaller problem that would be talked about less.

I will say, to be fair, that at least Howden is a young player. Haley, Glass, and McLeod are all cases of knowing the player sucked and shooting a dead dog because reasons.

so what you are showing is that he really can only go up from here. He cant get worse.

though personally, i feel most advanced stats for hockey to be kinda useless. There are just way to many variables, and moving parts for them to be very accurate. But they do show the outliers and some trends.

baseball advanced stats are solid. So solid they ruined the sport. Lol
