10 years ago Boyle was an adequate bottom 6 guy. Soft as a pillow for a 6'7 giant, but a good soul for the locker room who could contribute. Was sad to hear he got sick. Then he got better and it was a great story. Became tough not to like him. 5 teams and 7 years later...I could see him being a good influence for a young team. But does the player coach really exist anymore or did it die with Reggie Dunlop? Not sure if on ice contributions will be there. Guess we will see where this plays out?
Dunlap was a passenger- Hansens’ were heart and soul

I will maintain that JT Miller wouldn't have been the player he is today, without those 2 trades in the span of 16 months.

He probably would be less mature which likely would have resulted in fewer points. He did have three 20 goal seasons with the Rangers though and now he’s likely at his physical peak at 26/27. I did want to keep him b/c the Rangers had so few #1 picks but i think you’re correct. There were warning signs and he appears more stable and productive since those trades.

A self rental would be a terrible idea if the end result is another Carolina-style bounce out if the young talent isn't ready. Despite all the talk about "competing teams don't sell," you have to take a good hard look at whether this team is actually a contender for something more than a quick exit or even winning merely a round. NHL GMs do a lot of dumb things that they shouldn't, so just because the team may or may not do something doesn't make it wise.

Go ahead and chalk me up in the "100% against," category. If they've decided they cannot afford a 5 year, $5m+ contract for Buch, and they honestly probably cannot since ultimately that's probably a salary they are paying to a third liner or at best their 6th or 7th most important winger, then he should be dealt if the return is even a Hayes-like one. But given last year's deadline, probably more.

Carolina won the board battles and it was pretty obvious the successful playoff teams won on the boards. The Rangers didn’t add anything besides 6 months of age to this crop so i’m not confident with the boards. I could see Buch moved for some some additional size and toughness. Less costly but in the Matteau/Noonan type (although with an expansion draft this could be a headache).

I'll never understand the insistence on constantly bringing up the past. Trades, good or bad, are over and done with. What's going to make the team better today?
I guess the point of bringing it up was that it would be extremely ironic if he was a main trade piece for a player that would specifically fit the Rangers needs right now in a lot of ways. (Young, high potential, Center, Proven chem with Panarin)

I think for all sports fans, to varying degrees, trades represent one of those ultimate What Ifs.

Everyone wants to win them, no one wants to lose them, and we can sometimes struggle to take into account all of the nuances that may or may not happen if we alter past events.

Uh...sure...ok.
it's just amusing how Boyle has a strong bottom 6 player for many years and one of the best PKers of this entire generation, using his absolutely massive body to his advantage on the boards and with his reach on the PK, and racking up tops-in-the-league hits pretty routinely, and the only thing you can come up with is he wasn't goonish. Which is funny because Boyle was never shy about shoving and post-whistle scrums and was very defensive of his teammates his whole career. He just couldn't fight. That's it. I guess most of the league is soft then.

If you want to talk about hits, PK/defensive ability, FO numbers, I am right there with you. You asked why he has a reputation as soft. I gave you the answer.

He isnt soft compared to all players, but he is soft for a 6'6", 245 lbs player. He always held back when someone of his frame could absolutely decimate opponents. Its not about fighting, at least not for me.

CK never used to hold back when hitting, and it earned him suspensions and a reputation

I really don't understand the objection to signing Boyle as even a warm body at under 1m.

Do we really expect to go an entire season without injury to a center? There will be COVID precautions and players will miss games. Do we want a situation where Zibanejad is hurt and we are rolling out Strome, Chytil, Howden, Rooney down the middle? One of those guys goes down and then what?

Not to mention we will have a taxi squad throughout the season so it's not like there is this huge roster logjam that will prevent us from seeing young players in action.

Its definitely largely this. Also a weird expectation some fans have that everyone over 6'4 should have a WWE signature finishing move to "play like their size."
I don't really care about the fighting aspect but the perplexity was how he got rag dolled constantly. Yeah, he threw muffins. But he was tossed around and pulled to the ice in a shockingly short amount of time.

Fighting, like trades since its topical, are the ultimate for fan investment. Boyle losing a fight in a ranger jersey was the like losing a fight in your own life. It shouldn't be that way but I think a large amount of the taint is rooted there. Plus leaving because he wasn't promised a promotion.

Putting Brian Boyle in the 'Jack Johnson' category if he signs honestly.

no idea what this dude will bring on the ice, insurance policy for what? Young team need vet is the only reason. Wish they could have taken the Boyle and Johnson money and found a competent vet (or vet-ish) LD. I can't see them not being able to obtain that. I'm just kinda puzzled I suppose.

just don't like it, but I guess I get it.

This is hyperbole. Toughness isnt fighting or WWE. Bertuzzi played tough every shift and players watched out for him whenever he was on the ice. Bertuzzi gave up 3" and 15 lbs compared to Boyle, who no one ever worried about, ever. Fleury was more feared on the ice than Boyle.

Brian Boyle, 2010's Whipping Boy on the 4th Line is now a sought after commodity. For those kids who get too worried about what the mob says.... this is what happens when you play the game that you do. It's not too different from the gladiators that came before you.

Boyler won the mob over. He put the work in. He got better.
Dear God Mikos...I can see him being laid out at least 3 times by Wilson and Johnson as he foolishly drops the gloves with either...it would get some ugly really fast . He would not back down that we all know...but he would almost certainly be killed . Maybe they should just hire him as an assistant coach for Hartford or NY . He likely still a good guy to have around the young fellows but probably not on the ice in games.
