if he was as good as Brassard, for starters

We are talking about Strome as if he is paid like Brassard was at the same stage in their careers. He isn't.

5.52% vs 7.25%

Strome isn't overpaid. He isn't blocking us from signing our FAs. There's a huge difference between knowing his limitations and flat out acting like he's a 4th liner

I think the challenge Hajek needs to overcome is more mental than anything else. I'm not saying that as a criticism, but the player he was during his last year of juniors was a very good defenseman. One that played very well in the WJC and the WHL. When the trade was made, I followed him closer back then, and Hajek has all of the tools to be a good pro. He's gotta go into each shift thinking let's just have a good shift, get on the bench, and get out there and do it again.

The more he approaches it like a workout, the less pressure he will face. He knows how to play the game but just needs to settle into knowing how to fill effective minutes. The guy can skate, and has very good acceleration. If he gets the puck, just skate it out of trouble. He'll have more fun playing that way. Just has to embrace his strengths shift in, shift out.

and how are you replacing strome with no cap space?
The Rangers aren’t trying to contend this year so use Chytil there and see if he can prove he can do it. You can also put Panarin with Zibanejad if that floats your boat

I think Gorton will recoup that 2nd round pick when he moves Strome.

Without Strome, we’re also forced to play Chytil in a role he very well might not be ready for. Howden is likely your 3C and Barron your 4C w/o Strome. Not a fan of that.

That 2nd round pick might be 3-4 years away from being an NHL player. Gorton 100% made the better choice here than keeping Staal and a 2nd and letting Strome walk.

I despise the JJ signing but it’s a 1 year contract and I feel he’ll be more of a #7 guy by the end of the season.
I think that’s a plan but it never seems to be that easy.

RE: Brass v Strome:

If Strome put up 5 points in that bubble series. I would then, maybe give him that comparison. Brass always had an extra level for us when the games got tougher.

The best thing about Strome is that he frees up Zibanejad to another line where he can elevate the level of his linemates.

Offensive balance is key. I dont remember any Pens fans angry that Pascal Dupuis was blocking Malkin from playing on Crosby's line.

And that’s after the season when he was on 70 points pace on a contract at $3.1m.

Yes, this is important. And I am not convinced Chytil is able to do the same

Not with the same roster as last year they aren’t.

Best case scenario, Panarin, Zibanejad and DeAngelo replicate their career years and we would still be the same team offensively out of those 3.

We lost Skjei's production as well, and we are in a division with just 4 spots. No wild card, no 24-team format to bail us out.

I have a hard time seeing this team reach the play offs (top-4 in the div) with the Bruins, Caps, Pens, Islanders and Flyers being better teams on paper

Why did Gaborik get a pass? Dude's stick didn't touch the ice on a neutral zone forecheck in his entire tenure.

He shouldn’t... but the likely reasons are a)he was by far our best offensive player at the time, and we didn’t have Zib or Panarin at time. Plus we weren’t growing our own players so there was desperation for offensive talent.

Strome's weaknesses are why the organization is looking to replace him.

It's just that the opportunity didn't arise this offseason for a myriad of reasons, and keeping him around was a far preferable option to letting him go for nothing. My only beef is that we gave him 2 years instead of 1.

I mean in reality he didn't. Only with the superficial fanboys. Torts was not cised. Used to humiliate him in practice all the time.

Strome has nothing to do with Zibanejad/Panarin playing together. Playing the two of them together didn't make sense from the day they signed Panarin and our 2C was even more unknown at the time.

There’s more than just offense. The rest of his game is atrocious. Why do I want an offense only player who isn’t super cheap and needs a superstar to boost his production to an adequate level? Minimal sample but Chytil performed better with Panarin last year anyway. Not enough to take anything from of course but I know for certain if Chyil had 0 points in 100 minutes with Panarin it would be used to the contrary.

And it’s already happened. Anisimov scored 45 in 64 games with Panarin in 16–17. By far the best year of his career offensively. I've already illustrated this numerous times in the past with Crosby as an example. Every wing to ever play a decent amount of time with him has scored at a first line level rate and we're talking about guys ranging from like Phil Kessel to Dominik Simon.

Same for the whole Nylander/Jagr/Gomez thing. It's not true. Gomez had a great year with Jagr. Jagr's decline wasn't a function of playing with Gomez. His second year with Nylander, compared to his first year with Nylander, was just as much of a falloff as his first year with Gomez, compared to his second year with Nylander. Gomez and Jagr has a 62.5 CF%, 61.8 GF%, 60.7 xGF% in 514 minutes in 07-08. It was one of the best lines in the league. I don't understand how this narrative always gets perpetuated.
He was supplanted by Dubinsky. Maybe that's how?
