None of those are proven NHLers

Hájek struggled heavily all season, Bitetto is an AHLer and fringe 7th D at best, Reunanen is unproven and Miller is coming off a mediocre sophomore college season at age 20.

I don’t see those options really as being worse than a known terrible player. Of course they could have just tried to sign someone adequate like Merrill or Hutton and then those issues would be gone.

bitetto has played 183 games. makes him one of the most experienced guys on our blueline. can debate if he's good enough but I think he's definitely a proven depth nhl dman

If you replace Johnson with an ELC (Reunanen), you still only have 1.1m in cap space. That's not going to be enough to sign a guy like Haula

What is holding us back is the $12,994,444 in dead cap and $3,950,000 in bonus cushion penalties

the dead space 100%...but i'm not sure that I would call having so many awesome young players that there is a bonus cushion penalty as 'holding us back' lol.

in a way that dead space is just a place holder for the big raises that guys are going to get so we can't spend it...that's $17 mil. the majority of that $$ in a couple years will go to raises for fox, shesterkin, kakko and lafreniere (hopefully cause that means they are good). so the issues we are facing now to fill in the team without that space will be the same issues we face after those guys get their raises...

i know they cant do much big, but wish they'd show some life 8^)
even adding a Koekkoek would cost maybe to much, and after signing Johnson and Bitetto, no clear role, tho i believe he has played on the right somewhat often

they could ELC a guy like Luke Martin, depth at Hartford on RD is slim - Raddysh, Loverde, Giutarri ..

I won't be surprised if they claim a guy on waivers when teams are cutting down, late in camp, some teams gonna try to slip thru some decent 23/24 yr-olds...

The Jets have one of the worst blue lines in the league, and Bitteto's number of games there last season is a pretty telling indication of that.

He should be taxi squad only played in emergency situations. Let Johnson Smith Miller and Reaunanen fight for the last LD spot.

Are you saying Johnson didn’t struggle heavily?

Jack Johnson and Tony Bitetto are both awful and neither should be in the NHL.

The excitement of seeing our offense with Lafreniere makes me really not give a flying shit about Johnson or Bitetto's borderline skill level in the grand scheme of things.

I hope you don't lose sleep over this shit.

The problem isn't the talent pool. It's signing guys who have proven to be bad players over many games as opposed to giving other guys a chance. It's the same thing with recycling coaches.

What does Lafreniere have to do with a discussion regarding Jack Johnson, Tony Bitetto, and the defense?

If K'Andre Miller cannot beat Jack Johnson for a spot on the roster, then Jack Johnson isn't your problem

It's either the expectations you have of K'Andre Miller, or the ability of your head coach

The problem isn't K'Andre Miller vs Jack Johnson. It's deciding to sign Jack Johnson over literally ever other potential cheap FA LHD. And I don't buy the argument of "What if they didn't want to come here?" because while could be true for an individual player it is certainly not true as a whole among the entire group of potential depth LHD.

How do you know? Also, who should they have signed instead?

It's just probability...if there are, for example, 10 viable LHD who could all take deals in the low 1.xM range it is not reasonable to believe that 9 of them have no interest in coming to the Rangers which is generally a high priority FA destination and in this particular case is a team that could provide playing time to someone in that role. It's one thing if you're a team like WPG who has had trouble attracting FAs. The Rangers have never had that issue.

If you want me to provide a list of names some of the guys out there are/were Hainsey, Hutton, Mueller, Koekkoek, Claesson, Beaulieu, Merrill, Forbort, Kulikov. Not to mention all of the potential guys from Europe who you would know better than me. And, no, I'm not saying that's a great group of players but it's also not Jack Johnson and some of those guys actually have performed very well but are just unheralded for whatever reason (Koekkoek/Merrill in particular). The reason they have Jack Johnson over any of the previously listed guys, or other non-listed guys, is because they wanted Jack Johnson on the team.

The other reason to suspect this is the timing. They signed him the opening day of FA. Rumors leaked very quickly of their interest. That does not feel like a backup plan knowing all other options fell through.

Honest question for the general user. I've noticed on this site in particular that many of you "seem" to know about other players. My question is, where do you find the time to watch other teams players in addition to our own? That's like watching all 162 Yankee games. How do you find the time?

I can't be bothered to watch other players other than our own, save for guys like McDavid or Mackinnon, etc.

Or do you not actually watch them and just skip to looking at their analytics?

I personally think that Bitetto will surprise and be a nice complement to our skilled RD

To paraphrase: a lot of you guys come off as losers with not much else going on

I just have no f***ing idea where some people have the time to follow so many players. I mean, we're Ranger fans, so presumably we'd follow the Rangers first and foremost, but I dunno how the hell some users on here know so much about what seems like so many other teams and their players as well. I'm a Ranger fan, why the f*** would I watch other players?
