The Strome hate on here has gotten out of control. He can be a very frustrating player, but he was no worse than competent as our 2C last year. The only valid reason to want him gone is because we should want to upgrade our roster when given the opportunity.
I mean is it possible with all of these Bonus issues that we really can't afford him for 1-2 years at 4.5ish? I know no one here wants him long term and I agree with that.
I agree with the bolded. It gives us some more time not to panic and bring in the wrong 2c. and not rush/force Chytil to take on a seasons worth of 2c responsibilities.
I mean is Wennberg gonna be the replacement at this point? or are they gonna force something stupid and trade for someone like Domi.

Lots of teams have guys they aren't qualifying. The teams with cap space are just biding their team to see what players shake loose. Why trade for Strome if he'll be available as a UFA at a lower AAV? If the Rangers end up qualifying, they can still trade for him later.

And cheaper...

I don't hate Strome. He seems loved in the locker room, too. My issue, and the reason I don't want to bring him back, is that he doesn't even try to play defense. His production (even going by the second half of last season's numbers) is fine for a 2C. But our D is going to be very young. We can't have lines where the vets aren't back-checking. How many times per game did we see Strome floating behind the play as it moved into the Rangers' zone? If we had a veteran D-corps that could be counted on to clean up after players like that, it would be one thing, but we don't. We've got a group of kids we're trying to ease into the NHL.

I'd rather ice a top 6 of: Laf--Zib--Kakko and Panarin--Chytil--Buchnevich. Both lines would be defensively sound. Both lines would be possession machines. Both lines have playmakers and shooters. By mid-season, I honestly think it would be among the best 1A/1B situations in the league. There would still be work to do in the bottom six, but still.

And he had a knack for taking really lazy penalties at really bad times.

I could see $3.75-$4.25m depending on the term. Maybe a 3 year deal for $4m per season, and to me, if I was a GM of a team who had issues attracting UFA's and in need of some offensive depth, I'd be interested. That's complimentary money for a guy who can play RW or center, put up some points and play the PP and PK. He's also 27.

I'm not in favor of Strome being a long-term piece here in NY but as a stop-gap for a team like Ottawa or Buffalo or a team looking to spread out their offensive talent like Dallas he could hold some value. It's possible one of those teams would want to send back a contract (say a slightly overpaid 4th liner or depth d-man) but that's particulars that could be worked out

A. It sounds that the market is such that even teams who had issues attracting UFA's shouldn't have this problem this year.
B. If Strome sees only interest to be signed on a cheap, he might decide to take a short deal and bet on himself on the open market next year
C. Why would the Rangers take back a bad contract in this environment to help other teams to take Strome if the idea to move him in the first place is to create cap room to IMPROVE?

It's really weird. Somehow he had more approval after his first year than his second year here.
