Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the bonus amounts get added to a team's salary total at season's end? Because, if so, it's like not a huge issue as long as we leave 1-2m in space at the start of the season.
The bigger issue is this cap on how much bonus money can be spent in a year -- 7.5m. It will force the Rangers to make sure they have enough cheap depth in the lineup to sit the kids or let them develop in Hartford.
We need to keep that in mind when people start complaining that the Jason Strudwicks of the world are playing while the K'Andre Millers are in the AHL.
This is a very nuanced conversation though and one we can't really have without getting bored. Suffice to say the team will need to find a balance between paying vets 1-2m AAV on this year's cap vs having bonuses roll over to next year and effecting next year's cap.
One positive side effect is the Rangers may need to gives kids like Reuschoff, Richards and Khodorenko some NHL time as well as less heralded young players like Hajek, Barron, Gettinger and Reunanen. It may be a financial necessity.
