It would be a bad choice. He really hasn't demonstrated anything as a head coach that leads me to believe he's the guy to help this team take the next step.

Look at this resume and then ask: if he wasn't Rick Tocchet, would he really be a candidate?
No, they’re hiring him to go after the Tom Wilson’s around the league.

I've really had enough of the "Oh, we're signing Coach X - let's bring in former players from his team." Can we just let the GM pick the players instead of all this nonsense coach bias? We already went through this with AV and Glass, Jacque Martin and Jack Johnson. It's enough already. If they want to give input - fine - but they have had way too much control over the process in the past and I hope if a coach recommends a terrible player going forward Drury says "No" instead of agreeing like constantly happened with Gorton.

Panarin was amazing in the playoffs as a Blue Jacket, no worries about him at all in the playoffs going forward.

Blackwell should be nowhere near the top 6 anyway, that was DQ's fault. He got pushed around in a random game, could never stay on his feet, he would be put through the ice in the playoffs. That other winger on that line needs to be a guy who can forecheck, cycle effectively, win board battles and can create space.

Blackwell hit a lucky run of shooting and stuff but he was never a fit on that line aside from the asinine comparisons to Fast, who actually could win board battles and create space and forecheck, the only thing they actually had in common was they were both smaller players who shot right handed. That's it.

If Strome returns, that RW needs to be Kakko or Kravtsov (or Buch if he's still here). Hell, even Gauthier would be a better fit than Blackwell, he'd at least be worth a shot.

I'm not worried about Panarin. I am fairly confident he will produce well but he would benefit from players different than Strome and Blackwell. . Just somebody on that line has to do the dirty work and its not our 11M 5'11 player who should be doing it. Its Panarins job to drive play and score goals so its not a slight against him

Not a lot of great options out there if Rod the Bod is staying in Carolina, but I vastly prefer Gallant.

Even if he's a short term only option, that's actually preferable at this point perhaps. Get a guy who plays an up tempo, offensive game in here for 2-3 years and then check the market again.

I hope this is just some strategy to have Gallant commit sooner rather than get more looks elsewhere.

This isn't coming from the Rangers though. It's not a strategy by the Rangers.

Again - have to keep in mind where this originates. This is from Tocchet's camp.

So yes, he knows how many interviews he had. But I highly, highly doubt the Rangers told Tocchet "hey buddy, it's between you and Gallant"

So its pure speculation by the reporter/insider. Maybe Tocchet has interviews with another team too. It helps his leverage.

On Tocchet, I would be incredibly underwhelmed if he's the guy, but at least it wouldn't be a clown like Roy, Babcock, Hartley, or Boudreau.

Just bring Torts back if that's the direction you want to go in. Would rather him than Tocchet. Tortorella at least has a history of results. What has Tocchet proven?

Tocchet is not my first choice but is it really that bad of a choice? Everyone is clamoring for Sullivan, including myself, and Tocchet was an assistant with him for both Penguins Cups. And it doesnt seem like he was playing with a full deck in Arizona. Chayka was a clown and that roster was pretty bare bones. @bobbop can speak more to that though im sure
I'm not a big Tocchet fan. His style is pretty boring (1 in, 4 back) and he could never find offense, even when the team traded for Kessel and Hall. He also found ways to feud with a lot of his best players (e.g. OEL, Domi, Duclair)

I think the Rangers can do better.

Also for everyone freaking out, Tocchet will have his 2nd round with Columbus and Seattle this week. His agent is doing his job getting all of this info out there.

Yea its' very clearly coming straight from Tocchet. The Rangers aren't using a guy whose profile reads as follows to negotiate in public

That agent is evil, imagine freaking out three fanbases like that.

As I have posted here in the past, John Gambadoro is not a reliable source. Tocchet may have had a second interview but he wouldn't know if it was down to two.

Gambo is a Tocchet toady iirc from the Yotes boards in the past.

I think it all comes down to getting rid of Strome for a more well rounded center and finding a coach that can get his vets to play a more well-rounded game. I think we're judging the roster based on what DQ could get out of them. But I often wonder what having the same roster with the addition of a 2-3 well rounded players + a new coach does. I think a lot. I do think 1 top 6 player who plays with more grit is a good idea, plus 1 very solid 2-way middle six center (who can win a faceoff) and a strong 5-6 vet d-man + a more solid system does for the whole outlook of the squad. And if all three of those guys can bring some leadership too than I think the whole complexion changes. And we're looking at a vastly different squad. Even if we're not a contender yet with that roster, we are likely a playoff team.

How quaint.

I guess CLB and Seattle are big dummies too

We've got motivated reasoning out the wazoo going on here.

This is like bringing the Hindenburg into land if Tocchet gets hired.

also very happy I can like posts again and not have to comment “like”

I’d prefer a lot of names over Tocchet, including Boudreau and Tortorella.

First preference would be Brind’amour, Gallant, or Sullivan. But those guys are looking less likely as each day passes.

I wonder how much Gallant wants to be with the Rangers considering he just saw a mass exodus of firings a few weeks ago. This is a guy, as we have discussed who has been excused rather quickly from his past stops. I am sure he would prefer to not have that scenario occur again
