Any Matthews trade starts with Laff.
Matthews is a wonderful backdoor one-time scorer who's terrific at a capitalizing on setups by other players, but he actually creates very little offense for himself in a relation to the amount of skill he actually has. I would want absolutely nothing to do with him and that contract, nothing!

Also don't forget he has exactly 3 years left on that massive contract that literally walks him right to UFA status. The amount of assets you'd have to trade for him when his contract only lasts 3 years and he goes straight to UFA would never be worth it. Dubas absolutely screwed that contract up. He gave up term and he gave up dollars. Usually you bend on one or the other, but not both. Guys making absolutely ridiculous money in a walked him right to UFA status so he can laugh his way right out of Toronto into whatever other team he wants to go to

If Matthews asks out of Toronto what can we offer?
Do we need players that choke and have that losing mentality when it matters. No thanks to him or Eichel. Give me Barkov or a signed Barkov. Complete player. 200 ft game. Mathews is not a player you win with. He has loser type vibes from him.

Pass. Matthews is a playoff failure. Yea its a team sport but he is not helping. Need players that play well and score consistently in the playoffs. Not ones that go missing like Rick Nash did here. Kreider despite his inconsistent play at times, he actually does well and is scoring in the playoffs.

CBJ adding another incomplete high priced winger seems unlikely
Jones has 1 year on his contract so I don't think they are going to get someone better than him. Yea he stinks in the playoffs so far but he is still an elite offensive talent you would have locked up for 4 years.

There is really very little difference between a contract that “walks a player to UFA” and one that ends a year before considering if he signs one that ends a year before and really wants to leave he can always just go to arbitration or say he is only signing a one year deal.
