If it was me, I'd go to a soft cap, with the overage penalties being used as revenue sharing to buoy financially struggling franchises.

We didn't really have a problem pre-salary cap with big market teams dominating proceedings the way they do in Europe.

Kreider is fortunate the Rangers gave him 7 years and $6.5M AAV. He wasn't getting that contract after Covid. Chris should kiss his agent's feet every day for getting him that contract.
He would have gotten a bigger deal the Hayes if there was no

Like he said no one doubting it’s a real thing but it’s very odd timing. Either he had it and played well with it for years in check or it just by a stroke of happen stance it got to the point where he can’t play anymore when 99% of his deal was paid and the hawks needed his cap hit off the roster.
I don’t know hossa so I’m not going to comment on his integrity good or bad. In his career he’s showed he’d do whatever it takes to win offering his mercenary services to the pens, wings, and hawks for a chance at the cup and high dollar sometimes short term deals.
If you don’t think the timing of his announcement is the least bit suspicious then we’re just in disagreement
It was pretty well known he had an ongoing problem for many years.

Crazy part about it if not for covid he would have surely gotten more money than Hayes. He was playing the best in his career at that time.

I’m good with this. Something at least. We’re gonna get punished for drafting great players.

I'm mainly surprised that they never bothered to investigate it and come up with options/alternatives (different fabrics, lycra undershirts, etc). It reminds me of the first Lord of the Rings movie, where John Rhys Davies was ready to quit and have them re-cast Gimli for the other two films because his make up was literally destroying his face. They put in the time, tried some alternatives, and found a new way of doing the makeup that didn't destroy his skin. With the money at the league's disposal, I don't know why this condition has never been addressed.

I still wonder what quack DR they found to make that diagnosis. They must have found him running adds in the back of MAD magazine or penthouse ofering fugazzi remedies to whatever ails you out of his strip mall office

Someone call for a doctor?

I refuse to believe that this is a problem in the modern NHL. Was it a problem for me when I played? Yes - good luck drying equipment when you play two days in a row. But for a modern pro? These guys can afford to use brand new equipment every game if they wanted to. I know that they have a staff there to dry and disinfect equipment between periods, likely having, for example, a pair of gloves for each period.

I can buy this being a random issue for a team here and there but there is no way one of the best players in the game ended his career because of it. I ain’t buying the post retirement propaganda either. Good on them for taking advantage of a loophole.

This has already happened. This isn’t a problem in the NHL. No chance. Who else is complaining about this condition right now?

It's been studied and addressed for years. Read the article I posted earlier about Tom Reid and google "gunk" "hockey" and some player names.

Years ago, I had a player in Roanoke who had a similar problem. I had to speak to a number of people in hockey to get advice and learn more about it.

It doesn't get a lot of press but dig around and you can learn a lot about it.

This is entirely hypothetical so before people lose their minds about this again it's hypothetical, but would this board consider a deal based around marner for kreider and kakko. I'm not advocating that it's a good deal for either team, nor am I saying it's realistic. I'm just wondering about the value for each team. NYR takes on cap hit now while they can afford it but moves out CK and land an elite talent winger. I know losing KK would suck, but I just think it might be an interesting consideration. Nothing more than that because I know that in the real world it's probably not at all realistic.

I’d have to vote no on that. Marner is not the solution to our problems.

Say what you want about what Reaves did, but Graves should've been thrown from the game for the interference hit in the 2nd. This is more players policing the game when the refs can't.
Meh, I recognize there was a connection but Reaves crossed a line with the eye gouging and kneeing the head.

My observation was the player that just decided to retaliate by taking Petrangelo down during that non-sense. He didn't fight an enforcer, he went eye for an eye with their skilled defender. Colorado proving you can win with skill.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time he signed it, before the world went awry, that deal was perceived as a hometown discount albeit a slight one. Easy to look back on it now & realize there's no chance he gets that deal on the open market after the cap froze.

Regardless, the point stands, Kreider isn't waiving a year after signing a long term deal in place he wants to be.

I don't think he fixes our problems at all on his own, just thought it was an interesting way to consolidate two of our top 9 wingers. I would expect something else from Toronto in a deal but thought it was an interesting concept.

You can win with skill, but Colorado are no pure skill team. They can also play that game, which is what you need.

At the moment it looks like Kreider will be 3LW next season. After a year of doing it and a prospective of doing it for the rest of his contract while here, he might change his mind then (not for Seattle or strugglers like Buffalo or CBJ) IF the right opportunity presents itself especially if he could be making more money in states with no (or smaller) income tax.

If I had an issue with Gorton - it would be him being overly conservative when it came to giving longer deals to RFAs. We know there’s a risk but IMO this risk is very mitigatable. Buchnevich should have been given one. I really hope Drury recognizes Chytil situation as an opportunity to lock up a future top6 center at a discount.

The Kreider comments keep getting dumber and dumber. First of all if he was worried about playing in a high tax state why would he not have decided that for FA last year and do it. Second other than in posters minds on this Board who says he is the 3LW next year? We will see what happens but if he produces like his history there will be times he gets on a streak and will move around and get more playing time. We are talking about a legit 30 goal scorer which right now there are not that many proven scorers on this team. Finally the RFA conservatism is BS There were many on this Board that wanted to give ADA a 5 year 30 million contract last year. Were you one of them? Best decision Gorton made although even the contract he did give ADA backfired.

I wouldn’t fret too much about the Kreider contract, or the Trouba contract for that matter.

I'd wager quite a bit that with a flat cap for the next five years, another round or two of compliance buyouts are on the horizon.

Wonder if the Leafs semi blow it up if they get knocked out. Can't move JT, Muzzin or Brodie due to full NMC. They won't move Matthews.

That leaves Marner, Nylander and Reilly as the pieces they have to retool a bit.

They need forward depth, defense and goaltending.

I think he'd get that contract on open market in covid world. Prior to covid world he would have netted 7 or more with ease, but he took a discount at the time.

So what you're saying is incoming Bernmeister trade thread. Kreider + Jones for Nylander/Marner?
