I'm starting to realize the internet is so caught up in wanting revenge for Tom Wilson that they are forgetting fighters don't correlate to having a tough team.
The 'toughness' we could use is tough to play against on the boards, on the puck, on the forecheck...we don't need a deterrent to Tom Wilson...The reason a player like that IS effective is because of the other things he does in his game, not the fighting.
Panarin, Krieder, Laf, Kakko, Zib, Chytil, Buch and even Krav are all strong on the puck and tough on the boards...built for playoff hockey. Trouba and Lindgren are tough in the same vein in the defensive end and use their bodies effectively to remove forwards from the puck. Hell even Fox's boardplay is tough as nails. Would love to see KAM use the body a bit more in regards to puck seperation. What we truly need is a rolling forecheck with talent on the 4th line that can succeed in defensive zone deployments. We also glaringly need faceoff help. Sure it's nice to have someone WILLING to drop them when necessary, they just caught us at a time where most of ours were injured. Our trajectory at forward, if everyone takes the next step shouldn't be really touched at least in the top 6....we could use role players that have specific talents that can be deployed up and down the lineup that are tough to play against IE, Cizikas, Coleman, Martinook, Nosek, Goodrow...heck even Getzlaf, Perry or Chiasson.
This is obviously outside of any cap casualties but if we should ideally roll out a top 9 of:
Laf - Zib - Buch
Panarin - Chytil - Kakko
Kreider - Strome - Krav
^ That's a playoff-style hockey top 9 easily. Speed, strength, size...ability to get stuff done in the dirty areas and LOADS of skill.
The last thing this team needs is a fighter.
