If I'm Drury, I'm not sure what I can do with this group. Maybe bring in a real leader to hopefully pull them together. Either a player or a coach. But is that person out there? Don't know. I don't think it's any one villain here...it's just a bunch of mellowish personalities and a lack of any urgency out accountability. But we say accountability like panarin and Mika and kreider are doing something bad. But they're not. They're just not the leaders a team needs.
I think Drury understands this and we can see he has tried bringing in more gritty players. It just hasn't worked.
I suppose they can try a new coach or push some different players into lead roles.
I can't imagine them moving a Panarin or a Mika or a Kreider. And that doesn't even solve the problem, really. It's quite a quandary.
Gallant has to take the candies from the babies. If say Kreider or Panarin or whoever it is isn't pulling their weight, take them off the pp, reduce their ice, embarass them with less ice time until they get the message. At the same time show some faith in the kids to do that work. Its the only tool he can use, and he needs to.

Drury needs to have a clear conversation with all of the vets.
"I am not moving any of the kids, you will be moved before they are. If we lose, and they don't play. Then we're not giving you reinforcements to continue to lose. The team will sink or swim with the kids after you've left.
You want to a cup, get the kids to play better. And stop whining when you play with them"

There are teams that would trade for Panarin, Kreider, Trouba etc. I'd argue that Kreider currently is and has been living up to his contract. At this point, aside from Fox, he's the only big contract player playing up to its value.

There are teams that these players would accept a trade to as well. It's going to come down to retention. 50% retention is a ~$5.8MM cap hit to the Rangers and the receiving team for 3 years after this season. Rangers would likely get a very good return with that type of cap hit.

(These are all with retaining 50%) Trouba at a $4MM cap hit 3 years left aftet this one. Goodrow at $1.8MM, that one might be tough with 4 years left. Kreider 4 years left after this season at $3.25MM. Zib's deal is not tradable in my opinion.

Rangers can retain on 3 deals. Choose wisely.

Who are we kidding though? Drury will trade for Kane instead of making these difficult moves and letting the kids play. Let them sink or swim.

Was thinking the same thing.

Trade Panarin, Mika, Trouba and CK

All of them

I'd trade Panarin with 50% retention. Open up the bidding war and cash in LARGE

Panarin at half of 11 mill? Jesús no.
Depends on whether you thought we had a chance of beating Colorado or Tampa, cus if you didnt he probably just wasted a 1st rounder and gave away a solid prospect in Barron, who btw Winnipeg is loving. Its all perspective, i would have been happy keeping both those things and losing in the 1st round last year because imo we had no chance.

Barron just scored

Nah. The point is to win. We made moves to win and it showed. Anything couldve happened in the playoffs. I truly think we couldve won in the finals if everything went right.

We have the f***ing tallent to win a cup. Why are we talking about retaining 5 mill. It makes no sense.

Our chance to win is now. We are so far away from trading and retaining on our players.

People really wanna trade Igor 🤔

Personally?

Sure. At this point, no one should be immune from a trade if you can get back a lion's share.

That, and all I'm seeing with Shesty is Lundy: a team playing indifferent or incapable and expecting only their goalie to show-up night in and night out.

That's not to say he's been playing as well as he did last year, but the point remains. Also, with no competent goalie in net and maybe others will really want to get out of NYC.

I dont think it'll come to that but if there's a scenario where Panarin waives to be traded there's plenty of teams that could make it happen. I made a post about it last night, people may have to reign in their expectations about what they believe a trade may look like though. You're probably not getting a blue chip prospect, you're likely not getting a super high pick this year. Rebuilding teams are not giving that up and playoff teams don't have many of those. In all likelihood you'd be looking at competitive teams that are looking to upgrade a current top 6 player. In our instance we're making the trade for cap space, downgrading a bit but bolstering the depth. Think the Gaborik trade for Brassard +.

Anaheim would be a different instance, they'd look at a deal like that because at this stage in their rebuild they have a number 1C in Zegras, they have 2 decent place holders at 2C in Strome and Henrique, McTavish is incredibly likely to fill that spot at some point. 2 blue chip defensive prospects in Drysdale and Mintyukov. Troy Terry will likely be locked in long-term. They're at a point now where they've got some cornerstone pieces in place and a star veteran might make some sense to add going forward. That's in stark contrast to a team like Chicago who doesnt have many pieces in place and just doesnt make sense at this point in their rebuild. The Ducks are a realistic destination but I dont know that it's the ideal target for Rangers. No Zegras, no McTavish, no Mintyukov. Troy Terry would be awesome but doubtful. They don't have many other roster players that are enticing. I'd say no chance they move this year's first. It'd likely be something like a future 1st, a 2023 2nd rounder and an extra piece or 2. A high pick next year might be nice but is that what we're looking for?

Buffalo and Arizona have some great pieces, what's the chances he waives to go there? Doubtful.

Teams looking to upgrade a top 6 player would probably look something like...

St Louis- Tarasenko(UFA), +

Florida- Sam Reinhart, +, Hornqvist (UFA) for salary

Nashville- Duchene/Johansen, +

Vancouver- Horvat(UFA)/Boeser, +

I could see some other plausible scenarios as well... not saying I'd even make these trades or not but this is the sort of value people should probably expect, not so much Zegras, 2023 2nd OA, etc...

There is a difference between having talent and being able to win. The mix of players this team has is not working. Can change the lines around as much as the coach wants but the result has been the same.

Let's see if this current trend continues into January. It's not that the Rangers have been unlucky or dealing with injuries to their Star players. They have been plain bad and haven't shown a lick of heart. That's a problem.

If it does continue then last season was clearly an anomaly. The Rangers won't have any cap room to make adjustments in the offseason save for a hockey trade but that won't involve any of the big contracts.

The Gaborik trade was awful and I don't know why we're looking at that as a good thing. He really haunted us in the Cup final that year too.

Brassard was a decent Ranger, but him and Stepan were interchangeable. John Moore and Derek Dorsett were nothing burgers we'd have been better off without. Meanwhile, the gaping hole on the first line necessitated a trade for a near-the-end MSL (age 38) the following season, which ended up costing us 2 more first round picks, and got us a player who aside from one hot streak during the 2013-14 playoff, generally underperformed in the remainder of his time on the team, and then retired.

I still hold that the coach is the easiest thing to change at this point. You're not going to find a good deal for any of the vets even if they agreed to waive their NMCs.

Best bet is find a coach that will sit them until their stats start to look bad and that wakes them up, and who will incorporate the kids into scoring roles with them, and if they cry about it, will demote them and not the kids.

If they care about their stats, they will start to care about the team, because they will realize that under a good coach, the two will be correlated. Gallant either doesn't have the intelligence or the willingness to align their wants with the team's wants.

Why would you want to bring in a poor defensive center who isn't a very good 5v5 scorer? How is that a fit?
He’s a strong personality/competitive guy who can get the boys going. There is plenty of talent on this team, they need to start playing like they give a shit.

Is Glen Sather still receiving a paycheck as an advisor or whatever title he holds now? He should be the first one fired.

Players might waive their clauses, yet they are not just going to waive to go just anywhere.

The return for them: Given

Most contenders are at, or near the cap ceiling, they can't afford to trade for them

Most re-builders don't want them, they want futures

It leaves only a small subset of teams who would trade for them, and would the player being traded want to go there? Especially if they have several years left on their contract?

Trading Gaborik with a year left or whatever, sure, trading away someone who is still signed for like 3-4-5 more years, it does not happen often for reasons.

I'm sure he's getting paid but it's all the personnel he's installed that needs to be gutted. His fingerprints need to be wiped from the org

Think about how lucky this org has gotten... Fox demands a trade... we win two lotteries... Shesty....

yet we still suck.

I'll take another lottery win this draft and Zegras demanding a trade.... maybe that will put us over

If Zegras played in some cold and shitty place half the year Maybe id buy this hope for him coming here. But theres no reason to expect him to ask for a trade

Laf has shown next to nothing. Zegras is one of the best young players in the league and plays a far more important position. The Ducks would never do that.
