Tolvanen would have been such a good fit. He would have been great depth at the wing. Seattle did an amazing move claiming him, they are quietly having a pretty impressive season.

I dont think the Rangers were the team to take the chance on Tolvanen, especially when Kakko & Kravtsov are getting top 6 minutes (isnt that what we all wanted?). They prob wouldve claimed him if Kreider had been hurt before that though.

The Kane stuff is more national media driven than the New York media.

The Rangers beat writers aren't pushing the Kane stuff. Mollie. Vince. They downplay the Kane stuff. The Rangers need another top 6/9 forward but someone other than Kane. They have discussed it on their podcasts. Brooks hasn’t mentioned Kane in a while. He was talking about ROR last week.

The national media guys write/discuss Kane will get an extension as part of the trade. The Rangers don't have space for that. KAM is pushing for a big contract. Even a 2-3 year bridge deal will be expensive.

Vince was discussing Miller reaching 50 points or Kakko reaching 25 goals on his podcast. Which one will occur? Miller reaching 50 points is more likely. Maybe he won't get 50 but he will come close with the way he is playing right now after a tough start to the season.

The contract stuff comes from Frank and LeBrun. Maybe Kane will get a contract extension as part of the trade. Kane isn’t looking to take a big cut. Good luck.

The Rangers need another top 6/9 forward and a LHD. Maybe even an upgrade for the 4th line. Get a little bigger and heavier. This isn't last season where the Rangers had $30M of accrued cap space at the deadline. The Rangers could include Blais's $1.5M in a deal to make the cap work.

KAM, long term, is going to cost 6M+/year

They need to figure out cap situation for next year. I dont think they will get extension done until cap is announced.

Big difference if cap goes up 1m or 4m.

Especially since Chytil, Laf and Krav all need contracts too.

Cant box yourself in to allow those players to be poached.

No one is poaching anyone from the Rangers. Offer sheets don't happen in general, but especially when no one in the league has cap space. And the idea that any of our young players will sigh offer sheets with bottom feeders seeing what we have going on in New York is misguided at best.

Finally, a realistic comparable for Blais. We traded Buchnevich for Churla.

Blais, who reentered the lineup after having been scratched Tuesday against for the fourth time in 12 games, has not scored a goal in 50 career games as a Ranger (0-for-36 this season).

Shane Churla is the only forward in franchise history to wear the Blueshirt for more games without recording a goal, the tough enforcer going 0-for-55 over the final stages of 1995-96 and the entire 1996-97 season.
Rangers pick up ex-Golden Knights center Jake Leschyshyn off waivers

In my view the Rangers have to upgrade in 3 areas at or before the deadline.

1. They need a middle 6 forward who you can play in the top 6 confidently if needed. The ideal candidate is a guy who can score AND defend, because I think the best iteration of the Ranger lineup has Panarin-Chytil together and Gallant wont do it without a guy he trusts on RW. Horvat checks lots of boxes but the market for him will be competitive. Tank & ROR are good options but they are walking wounded and have lots of miles on them. The Florida forwards (Reinhart/Verhaege/Bennett) are interesting but the contracts make it tough. Drury may need to get creative.

2. They need an energy guy who can forecheck, hit and play the PK in the bottom 6. Sound familiar? Big minus next to Drury's name not bringing back Motte over Reaves, Blais, Crapenter. They can hopefully bring him back but the asking price will be higher because every playoff team could use Motter. Bjugstad has good size and Erne is a pest with some skill. There are others out there but theyll need a depth forward in that mold to get through the playoffs.

3. They need another left defenseman obviously. Today is the anniversary of Schneider's call up, but I believe less and less that Jones or Robertson are in this years plans. Harpur is a warm body and a fine 7D, nothing more. With Fox & Miller playing like this, Chychrun is more a luxury than a need. Schneider has also shown some good offense following the play, so getting a 3D who can play a trustworthy defensive game with some size and toughness should be the goal. I like Kulikov, but the D rental market is a lot of offensive guys who dont defend or guys who will cost 1st round picks (Gavrikov/Edmundson)

Robertson should be getting some nhl games in now incase we need him in playoffs, not sure why that hasn't happened yet. It's fairly obvious that the team feels Jones is too small and maybe too offense first of a player for that 3rd pair.
It hasn't happened because he isn't ready. All reports are he has been so-so in Hartford. He's trying to do too much and needs to simplify his game. The goal is to win games and Harpur has been adequate. They still need an upgrade at 3LD but Robertson is not the answer right now.

Get me complementary pieces who can stretch the ice and make life easier in the neutral zone for Laf, Kakko, Panarin. We need speed players to mix into the lines.
Agreed. We need someone with some speed who back up defenses a bit. Open up the neutral zone and hopefully let guys with skill like Panarin have a little room.

Harpur is a guy who will get you through a stretch of the regular but hopefully won't have to suit up in the playoffs
The best thing about Harpur is that you can go an entire game without ever hearing his name. That's not terrible for a 6D. Between Trouba, Fox, and probably Miller the Rangers are going to end up spending a lot of money on their D, outside of a kid on an ELC, they may have to get by with a less than ideal sixth defenseman.

IMO that's the TDL list

Gavrikov makes sense but not as a rental for a 1st. If we're giving up 1sts, I'd go for Chychrun.

I like both Bertuzzi and Motte as depth for the bottom9 to provide energy.

I don't feel great about Gauthier getting two head injuries in five minutes of two games - obviously freak plays, huge collisions and not a "toughness" or "injury prone" thing. But I'd expect them to sit him for a while

I know its @huerter, but he's brought up Labanc and if the Sharks retained 50 percent he'd be a really good acquisition. His playdriving numbers are and have been good, he could play on any of the top 3 lines and he's been productive. Plus he's from Staten Island. I don't think he'd cost a ton either.

32T podcast. KAM is a topic. He is looking at a large contract. Counting stats. 23 points in 43 games. Top pair D. Elite defender. The Rangers will take care of him. People don't recognize how good Miller is.

Elliotte Friedman said Kane's issue is his hip. Makes a trade more complicated. The injury has added another layer of uncertainty. Teams around the NHL know Kane is dealing with something. The hip hasn't gotten better.

Even at 50%, he costs too much. How are we fitting him under the cap next year?

Just go get Phil Tomasino since Nashville refuses to play him
why would they trade him?
Would do everything I could to make that fit.
7 or 8 x 6M could turn out to be a major steal in as soon as a year or so.

It'd be robbery in 2+ years.

I just can't see any of the agents suggesting to their clients to go long term unless their paid absurd amounts.

This, 100x. These playmakers need space. Did anyone even notice Pavs and Robertson last night? No Hintz really affects their games.
