Final thoughts on a wild Rangers week: Glen Sather's role, Pavel Buchnevich's suspension, Jeff Gorton's legacy, more

What was the significant deal? Was it Sam Bennett? He was one of few NHL players to move at the trade deadline. The Flames acquired a 2nd round pick and Emil Heineman who was the Panthers 2nd in 2020. The Rangers could have paid that price very easily. A 2nd round pick in 2022 and Karl Henriksson.

I heard the Same Bennett interview on 31 Thoughts. He wanted a change of scenery and more opportunity. Bennett had been in Calgary for 6-7 years and it was time for a change. He also wanted to play center and the Flames played him on the wing. They moved him all around the lineup.

Bennett is playing 2nd line center in Florida. He loves it there. More responsibility. He loves the beach.

Maybe the trade was for another player. It was not Eichel because he was injured. Maybe Drury tries to complete that trade if wasn't Bennett. He was involved in that process.

Bennett is one year away from group III. He is a group II with arbitration rights this summer. I read the Flames may not have qualified him this summer. Bennett was not returning to Calgary under those circumstances. He was not re-signing there if he had the opportunity to change teams.

Maybe Gorton should have made the trade considering his job status was tenuous.

Would Quinn have used Bennett properly? We saw that fiasco with Eric Staal and AV.

For the Rangers Heineman would be comparable to someone like Barron and is just a much better prospect than Henriksson IMO. We would have had to pony up more.

I like Sam Bennett but in his own way he’s as mercurial as Kreider. His game can go on and off and he’s not the greatest defensively. When he’s on he has a very good hitting game and he defends teammates very well and for his size is an excellent fighter. That is a good add to a playoff bound Panthers team.

I think people need to stop looking at what Bennett is doing in Florida and automatically think that he would be the same player here. He's attributed much of his success down there to being at the top six role and getting power play time and even being used on the PK. He absolutely would not have been in that role here. He would have been stuck on the third line again with no PP time. He literally landed in the perfect spot for himself.

Is RNH still a C or a winger now ?
He’s the best UFA C
Trade Strome for a LD
Yea Strome fits in well but a shakeup us coming

how much is Hertl worth ? 1st ,Jones , Georgiev ?

Seems like there are growing rumblings Vancouver may move on from Benning.

Florida v Tampa first round. If Florida is bounced, maybe they make a bold move for Buch as many here have mentioned.

Nashville got a stay of execution after a nice run, but they are a consensus first round exit against Carolina. We could line up here.

Vegas has not matched well against Minnesota all season. They will make bold moves if they don't advance far.

Things to watch over the next few weeks.

But does Gallant want to go to yet another expansion team? I think it would be extremely optimistic if he thought he could turn another expansion team into a contender in short order. Teams will be smarter this time around with who is left unprotected, the requirements, and making crazy trades (Florida).

Gallant wants to win a Stanley Cup. The only team I see him going to risking not making the playoffs right away is Detroit because of his relationship with Yzerman.
He might. First time around worked pretty well. Seattle ownership has plenty of money and they have no salary cap obligations which may make it easier for them to acquire talent. It won’t be the same as Vegas but it could be different and better.

Don’t sleep on Seattle.

Yup... lets hope all the 'favorites', underperform.

I mentioned in the Gallant thread, if he ends up coaching here, Reaves for one of the Rangers three fourth rounders is logical.

Not that surprised about Vancouver, while Benning has done some good stuff (keyword "some") they have a lot of cap tied to bottom sixers, Holtby, and they have two very dynamic stars who are injury prone (Boeser and Petterson). Something's gotta give.

I suspect that Florida would be more interested in bolstering than tearing down. Again I think Buch would be a prime target for them.

If Gallant doesn’t end up the coach of the Rangers it’s because we wanted someone else, not because he wanted Seattle over us IMO.

Gallant wants to win a cup. He doesn’t wanna be the expansion guy. Do we all anticipate a second expansion team being an immediate contender? Doubtful. The Rangers are one of the highest profile teams in the league, will surely not get outbid, and have a tremendous young core and an owner who wants them to start contending. Seems like a dream scenario for a coach and much preferable to an expansion team.

Other than reserving my right to address/clarify anything invoking my name, (continuing the DC imagery)
bern has been vanished to the Phantom Zone for not capitulating on Boo [despite that while most disagreed w/idea, nearly all agreed on my right to express it].

If you want legit, unadulterated, real deal bernmeister, you need to lobby the Commissioner's/Mayor's/Governor's/President's office for a release.

Is the Commissioner's/Mayor's/Governor's/President's name "Martha"?

The fact there would even be a doubt in Gallant's mind that he would want Rangers over Seattle is ludicrous. Seattle isn't coming out of the gate like Vegas did, teams are way more prepared for this expansion draft than they were last time.

RNH? We've got a Nuge already, he's called Strome.

Agreed. You won't see teams giving up high picks and trading good players to avoid their guy getting picked. Islanders, Minnie, Anaheim, who else fcked themselves over three times as hard instead of just relaxing and taking it?

We were nervous going in and we lost who? Oscar fking Lindberg LOL Could've been Grabner instead. Who cares.

Seattle won't have the firepower that Vegas had out of the gate.

The Rangers don’t have a 2nd and Heineman is a better prospect than Henriksson. It’s not that easy. The 2nd in 2022 would not be valued as high as a 2nd this year.

We should be planting seeds in Quenneville's ear that if he wanted to he could be coaching an original six team next season that's closely analogous to the team he took over in Chicago. That is, if he were to resign...

And I know this is a bad thing to point out, and might be in poor taste, but it's the truth. When a tragedy strikes a community you often times see the local sports teams come together and play a lot better than maybe they should have reason too. I don't think it's a complete coincidence that Vegas' season coincided with what happened in that community prior to the start of the season.

I mean the question is (and it’s probably been covered in one of the other threads) - do you risk losing Gallant in order to wait for Sullivan/Q-stache/etc. I want the Rangers to take their time, but they may not have that luxury

Can't rush this. I'm not saying hold out hope for the impossible (Q/Brind) but can't just rush head first into something we're not sure of.

So we're hoping for the canes to get smoked immediately yes?
10,000%!
Sequence of events:
1. Canes go out in round 1 or 2
2. Canes owner (notorious cheapo) decides that he won't tender offer to Rod's staff
3. Rod says f*** that and decides to test the market
4. Drury is already out front of his home with his staff and a brinks truck.
5. ???
6. Profit.
