I'd rather invest in a player like Buch than all the money we lit on fire paying a player based on his past accomplishments in UFA over the years.

Very strange where the Rangers sometimes draw the line on paying their own players.

I don't disagree.
But playing devil's advocate, I think the Rangers know they can't afford him long term with the other options they have on the wings, and they don't want to get into a position where hes either having a good seasons and they need to 'self-rent' before losing him, or he's having a down season and what appears to be lukewarm interest becomes downright cold.

From another teams perspective you have a guy who had a great season but can he repeat it and can you afford it?

I don't particularly like it, and it's weird that this happens for some players while GMs are happy to empty the vault for other players with different question marks, but I can see 'why' value like this exists

Sign Danault or trade for Dvorak.

Pick your poison.

Dvorak. I hate the idea of committing to Danault who I just don't see as a good fit on this team. Danault belongs in MTL with their defensive system. It would be a serious mistake to sign both Zib and Danault to long term contracts.

I'm lower on Dvorak, as I just don't see him turning into much more than he is (he's not a guy who hasn't had opportunity or anything. He's their 1C who gets PP time and has never broken 40 points). Danault is an interesting case. It's been a while since we've had a pure "distribution" style center. The only concern there is that we don't really have a lot of shoot first wingers. He'd be a great fit with Kreider and possibly Gauthier, but he's not really much of a threat to score goals. To me, it would limit the line options a bit (assuming Strome is moved) to something like

Laf/Zib/Kakko
Panarin/Chytil/Krav
Kreider/Danault/Gaut
Blais/Rooney/Goodrow

danault doesn’t want to be a 3C. It’s one of the major reasons for him leaving the habs.
I get the Dvorak never broke 40 argument, but that’s like saying Buch never hit 55-60 pts. I’m not too concerned about the PP points with Dvo, he likely wouldn’t be a first PP option here anyway. Most of his points come at even strength, because ARI, has a dog shit PP, and terrible defenders running the point.
I’m not really Down on Danault, but I think he’s going to be very overpaid for what he brings. His offense is very minimal, but he wants to be paid like a 60 pt C for the next half decade or more. That’s a no no for me.
I have no Doubts that DVo would perform well here, the cost to acquire him and his contract and age are also big deciding factors for me. Sometimes you have to make a move that based on calculated risk of potential. That’s why teams like Boston etc are also very interested to get him. Just like Eichel, he a player begging to be put in an new environment so he can perform better.

Would Getzlaf be a good center option? If we dump strome he could slot in as the 2c until chytil takes his job.
was thinking about that today but how much does he want? Is he gonna be ok with getting less ice time and no pp1 time?

That's why I don't see the point in signing Danault. Going with Zib and Danault is about the same as going with Zib and Strome. Danault simply is not enough of a dynamic offensive threat to be an effective 2c and worth the money. He is a shutdown specialist 3c that will be overpaid by someone.

Trade for Dvorak and keep the flexibility down the C position. Who knows who will be available a year or two from now. Chytil needs to keep improving and if he does then Danault becomes kind of redundant if signed as an expensive 2C. Absolutely no need for the Rangers to paint themselves into a corner already by signing Danault.

I think with Danault you’re looking at someone who can consistently tilt the ice in a positive direction against the other teams best lines. That not only neutralizes them but it also helps create chances for your team and there’s value in that for sure.

It also leads to more favorable matchups for others.

All these false narratives (not from you specifically, just in general). Danault had 23 of his 24 points at 5v5 this year while averaging 19 seconds of PP time per game. Dvorak had 19 of his 31 points at 5v5 with 12 PP points and 2:51 minutes of PP time per game; more than any center on his team. As with Strome, Larkin, Horvat and now Dvorak… Danault out produces ALL of them at 5v5 and the only difference in their point totals is that they all got 3 minutes per night on the PP while Danault got less than 20 seconds. He did play 3 min per night on the PK though. The difference between Danault isn’t ability; it’s purely how he’s been used.

Did he tilt the ice against Tampa?

Danault is a much better option than Dvorak, but for as good as he’s been lately, am I the only one who doesn’t want to keep committing big money into players leaving their primes just as we have a crop of excellent young players in Chytil, Kakko, Laf, Miller, etc that will all be entering their primes at similar times?

I understand the arguments for committing to Mika, despite me having some hesitations, but I really don’t want to be stuck paying to get these deals off the books when the cap will be mainly flat for 3-4 more years.

Look MTL know exactly what Danault is, that is why they are not signing him to the contract he wants or giving him the position he wants. MTL knows he is not the answer.

If Danault wanted 3 years at 5 million id jump but i dont want anything to do with a 6 or 7 year deal for him, its gonna end up like Gomez or Drury.

Montreal isn’t signing Danault for the exact same reason we didn’t sign Buch. Suzuki and Kotkaniemi are the future centers. Here, KK and Krav and Laf (and bread) are the top six wingers.

Let’s just bookmark Loki calling a 60 point season for Danault if he signs in NY. July 26th, 2021, 11:28pm EST.

Heck, I’ll even double down and say that due to the increased production, he breaks 60 and finishes top 5 in Selke voting.

Edit: has to be a full 82 game schedule and he has to not miss time with injury.

You are not the only one! We can not be committing money and term like that. We no longer have that luxury with Kreider and Trouba contracts. We have to worry about taking care of our in house guys like Fox, Shesty, etc.
If we are gonna hand out good money then the term can't be for 6 plus years to someone who is close to 30

He’s the sticking point for me. They know he is a 3rd liner. A very good one. He’s their hometown kid. They were ready to give him 30 million dollars and pay him the high range rate of what 3rd liners make. And he wants more with guaranteed top 2 line ice time. It’s crazy to what to give him the kind of deal he’s looking for. Danault and Dvo are comparable now, difference is, Dvo has more offensive potential, is younger and at least for the next 4 years around 2.5 to 3 mill cheaper.
Danault Dvo whatever, lol
I still have this feeling in my gut, just like Nash and Trouba that Eichel is going to be a ranger. He’s in the perfect age range of LaF and kakko Fox etc. a proven 1C stud. The rangers are one of the only teams that can absorb his whole cap hit and not send substantial money back for years to Buffalo. I think Drury swoops in at the 11th hour and gets a deal done with Adams but that’s just me

Yup and then add in the context that management was willing to sacrifice talent for more grit to fill out our bottom 6 and it results into what happened. From a talent perspective, any deal was going to look like a loss. Can this all backfire? Sure, but who knows maybe we’ll be a more complete team

Exactly. If Danault was the answer to Montreal's center problems they would have signed him already. If the Rangers sign him he will be the same Danault that does not fix the Rangers center problems - he will remain what he is, but much better paid.

I feel the same thing, i wonder if Eichel's agent has told gms that if other gms aquire him he's gonna want to leave for ny when his mntc kicks in.

I bet we get Eichel and next season we are all discussing the same shit about 2C, whether to pay Zibby big money or trade for a younger cheaper guy or go in the UFA pool and trade him for assets. There will still be posters trying to move chytil to wing too.
My prediction

back to Eichel, it’s very weird to me that Eichel hasn’t been dealt already. I’m sure other teams are offering solid packages but buffalo doesn’t want to take a lot of cap back for 4-5 years to make the trade. They are going to offer guys like Couterier massive deals. They aren’t going to want to lose Eichel and not be able to use that cap space to improve their team. Especially with skinner on the books still. I think there’s a ton of posturing going on between a Drury and Adams right now. And they both know the inevitable is coming sooner rather then later

Pretty much the same value as we got for Buch.

Honestly might be the worst trade I've ever seen our team make.

I've been upset at a lot of free agent sightings but I've never been this disappointed in a trade

You weren't disappointed by the Mcdonagh trade???
