Its not about need, it's about getting a player in there who could take a already strong forward group and possibly make it even stronger.

They've been spinning their wheels for a bit. It would behoove them to do something to try to push that group forward. Giving away the only decent goalie you've had in almost 20 years isn't a good start, nor do I know if their owner is willing to pay another big ticket, but they have the pieces.

trocheck would almost certainly go the other way, and I'd be much more interested in adding him to our team than Eichel.

I mean they can do it with cap but they have to sign Svech, they have to replace or sign Hamilton, find a goalie, and they wouldn't even give 3M to their RFA goalie who played well for them in the playoffs. I'd be stunned if they would pay for 10M Jack Eichel.

and if it gets me Trocheck, I hope they do it

All of the insiders were saying Eichel will be traded sooner rather later. That was 4-6 weeks ago. Last week, Elliotte Friedman said after the expansion draft. A few days ago, Elliotte said Eichel hopes to traded by the draft. Dreger is saying it's more likely Eichel will traded some time this week. This week ends tomorrow. Is there a Vegas line somewhere about Eichel being traded by the end of this week? I want that action. This whole thing is crazy. Adams is a novice GM. He worked in business operations for Kim and Terry Pegula's company and they made him the Sabres GM last year.

If Buffalo misses the draft while trying to pull this trade they’re going to look like an even bigger joke

Remember when Bob McKenzie tweeted the Islanders, Panthers, and Blue Jackets were the only teams left in the Panarin race just 1 hour before he signed with the Rangers?

I always thought Panarin was going to wind up on the Rangers especially after Davidson. He fit the age for a "rebuilding" team who had a slew of prospects to that pointo and got more after.

If Buch did go for #9, assuming it wasn't after the first 8 picks have already been made, I wonder how far up #9 + #16 would move us. If we could nab a guy like Eklund that's big.

I don't see how Buffalo can wait until after the draft. Once the 2021 picks are off the table the trade equations change considerably - and not in Buffalo's favor.

Eichel feels more likely now, simply because moving eichel later especially with ufa signings etc, makes the cap tighter. They're under the trigger because if eichel hits that NTC/NMC they're getting pennies on the dollar.

There are a few teams with multiple firsts like NJD / CBJ who could part with 1 later pick, and still pick high and significantly improve their team.

NJD makes sense if you include hischer, and maybe bratt? 29oa + '23 first?

What does Eklund do for us?

Posturing aside, I fully expect Eichel to be traded today or at latest before UFA day this year.

7/1/22 is a pretty hard deadline with the NMC (and potentially the SB as well). This is the last day where teams have their 2021 1sts and at latest UFA day is when cap space will be even further depleted shrinking the field more.

I don’t see the field being wider / offers being higher at the deadline. Certainly not without retention which is likely a non starter due to term.

I guess Buffalo could gamble on surgery + strong recovery to deal him at next year’s draft. That’s a heck of a gamble though, especially when teams will know they have the 7/1/22 deadline breathing down their neck.

I'd take players at 9 and 16 rather than move up, There is't anyone outside of Beniers in this draft that I'd move up that far for. Rather take two chances in a draft that hasn't been able to be scouted as well as usual.

No to mention all it takes is a minor setback and he misses all of next season completely.

Also have to remember that the draft in '22 will be incredibly strong compared to this draft. Teams are far more likely to move this years picks compared to next year.

The entire time I've felt July 28 is the actual deadline for this trade. Teams using their cap space for ufas is the real deadline

Exact quotes from that interview if it wasn't posted already.

Darren Dreger was on WGR in Buffalo a few minutes ago and said the following about the Rangers and Jack Eichel:
“This is a tough market to nail down. A good New York Rangers source, yesterday, thought that there is a slim chance that it was going to work with the Rangers. That is not to say it’s not going to be the New York Rangers, but again, that is where the process was yesterday and all that can change pretty swiftly with a phone call.”

Dreger continued, “but if you are looking at a four piece package from the Rangers, I had a package thrown at me that included Lundkvist or Schneider, Kravtsov, Chytil and a first round pick. I mean there is four elements and I threw that by the Rangers and they basically laughed, as if that is too much. Is it? It might be, from New York’s standpoint, but is it too much from Buffalo’s standpoint to ask for that.”
Marty Biron said that he thought that that package would be a “bad return” for Eichel, from a Sabres point of view.
Dreger added, “you don’t think that Rangers package is even close to what Buffalo would need, well the Rangers are likely looking at is too much and ‘we’re not paying that.”

And conversely buffalo would be just fine taking 22 picks if a deal happens after today
