... how is it tampering? It's a trade. If Eichel was an RFA or UFA before free agency started, it could be construed as tampering to show public interest in offering a player a contract when another team has exclusive rights to that player. Drury could scream I want to trade for Eichel from the top of the Empire State Building and it wouldn't be tampering... it would just ruin any leverage he had in trade negotiations. You can't tamper in a trade when a player doesn't have any movement clauses; the other GM either accepts your offer or not, whether your interest is public or not.
It’s considered tampering if you talk about a player on another team.

You can be vague but also very clear as well.
You can say "We are looking at acquiring a 1c via trade."
You cant say "We're looking at eichel."

I’m skimming the rules and almost certain this only applies to free agency and the intent to offer a player a contract.

We know which teams are “in” on trades all the time. For specific players.

Most beat writers are dumb people, this guy probably sent one of those fake accounts of Eichel tweeting "I want out" and asked his agent if it was real. I doubt they would verify a fake account of Eichel. Twitter would've even had to GIVE him that account because the username was already taken by a fake account prior. Only plausible scenario is there's an elaborate troll who's a hockey fan works for Twitter. But I doubt it and it would've been taken down by now.

Nobody cares about tampering anymore. That's how a million soon-to-be UFAs all signed instantly despite teams not being allowed to talk to them. It's an archaic rule that can't be enforced.

I’m at a point where I’d extend Zibanejad and look for a different Top 6 Center. I just don’t know who is realistically available and what would we give up?

Is Dvorak worth the price? Does Monahan really excite anyone, or is he true upgrade over Strome? Maybe reach out to the Kings and make a hockey trade for one of their young centers?

It can be enforced. It just isn't.

Right. Telling agents? Why? Which agent is there a benefit in saying "We were never really interested in Eichel anyway" to? Clearly, the Rangers have kicked the tires at least as hard as almost any other team. What kind of tweet is this, Larry?
He just settled with Chytil, is negotiating with Zibanejad and could theoretically negotiate with Strome. They could all ask about Eichel because it impacts their futures, destinations, and roles. Chytil could say why would I sign longer term if I'm immediately stuck in Buffalo? Zibanejad wants #1 center, pp time, cap space. Strome is in limbo with the team in general. That's my read.

If this was the case I would just rather let Chytil grow into the 2C spot

To BUF:
Krebs
Lundkvist
Jones
Georgiev
1st(s)?

To VGK:
Strome
Olofsson

To NYR:
Eichel w/retained
Smith

just spitballin, it seems off, trying to force it to work. Dont see Vegas doing it but they would get a center and a younger 'controllable' RW.

I think a Strome to Vegas deal is still possible, although I think Ottawa is more likely.

I would think something like:
Dorofeyev + NYR 3rd for Strome is a likely value deal. I doubt they can get Krebs moving.

Vogl is pretty interesting. Harrington is on the Sabres payroll.

Ken Holland... give Darnell Nurse 9.25M after Makar and Heiskanen took sub 9M contracts. I know... less UFA years, but still... Nurse isn't on that planet. Don't drive up the cost of guys like Fox with this crap signing.

It's not just more UFA years, it's all UFA years for Nurse. Heiskanen was sub 9 mil, but Makar was 9 mil exactly, and for only 6 years. Makar's deal only buys 1 UFA year.

Darnell Nurse is not in any way a comparable to Fox when negotiating his next contract. Neither is the 7 year, 9 mil per contract that Hamilton signed.

I know we say that they're not comparable but I tend to think players try to push those boundaries...to someone like Fox why should he take less in any years than someone like Nurse?
