That's why I want them to weaponize that cap space. The next two drafts are supposed to be amazing. The Rangers have a full (possibly over-full) roster as it is. They can't commit that cap space long term, because we'll start to need it (and then some) next summer. So why not play the Detroit role and take an expiring contract in return for a draft pick from a cap-strapped team?

While I am with you, I think if they go about using their cap space for something like that it ends up with the Rangers not taking back picks or prospects, I think they would want something that can help them for this season.

Well, we know that the Rangers were in on Danault and offered him 5×5. I would not be shocked if Drury wanted Getzlaf as a locker room guy. Would be adding a leader to the room.

Valley knows Drury. All he needs to do it ask him whats going on and if he can say anything about it.

True, but there are teams trying to upgrade via trade with the cap getting in the way. Teams might be stuck trying to re-sign RFAs. Probably won't get a 1st rounder out of it, but a free 2nd rounder? I could see it. The more shots we have in the top two rounds, the easier it would be to take a "boom or bust" kind of kid and hopefully wind up with an internal option for a top 6 center.

Because of the salary cap, after this coming season, getting Eichel means losing Zib and Strome. If we also lose Chytil in the trade itself, who plays 2C in two years? Bearing in mind that we won't have the cap space to sign a top 6 FA center or bring one in via trade without sending equal salary back.

If the team wants to gamble on Eichel's health (I don't, but I get the appeal), it has to be done carefully. It IS possible to "win the trade" and wind up with a worse team as a result. This would create a massive hole in our roster and financially tie our hands re: how to fill it. And that's all assuming that Eichel is and remains healthy throughout the remainder of his contract.

And this is another reminder that Chytil is only 3 months older than Kravtsov and has shown significantly more than Krav thus far in their careers.
