I watched a Finnish documentary on Teemu Selänne and, if my eyes didn’t deceive me, he was (at least at one point) an alternate captain of the Jets in his rookie season.

Sidney Crosby was also given an “A” in his rookie year.

Do you know of any others?

Pretty sure Lecavalier wore an A his rookie season than was named captain the following year before Andreychuk came in.

Taylor Hall and Logan Couture were rookie captain of their NHL all star rookie teams :sarcasm:
Hall, Couture tabbed as rookie captains

Other than that I see lists of "youngest" captains (McDavid, Lecavalier, Landeskog, Crosby) but none were rookies, so it perhaps never happened (or someone will have to dig in old school hockey?)

His rookie year was 1998-99, He didn't have an A. He was named Captain in 2000-01 then was demoted to A the next season. He was an A till 2008-09 when he was once again named Captain.

If I remember correctly Ovy was given an "A" towards the end of his rookie season. I know for sure he wore an "A" on a regular basis during his 2nd season but as I said, I think I watched him wearing it a few times towards the end of 05-06. Might be wrong though.

Always interesting how the best players tend to also be viewed as the best "leaders" or whatever

Yeah, Ovechkin is a great example. He followed Chris Clark as Washington's captain, and lets just say Ole Chrissie wasn't exactly the most gifted of the bunch. Some years ago the 4th line guy could be the captain, now it's pretty much always the best player in the team. I'm not saying Ovy is a bad leader, but perhaps someone else in that squad could fit the role better. It was not too many years ago, when Florida went the other way and named some random plug as their captain. Must've been a real nice fella.

Jonathan Toews was an alternate during his rookie season, 2007-08.

The Blackhawks had no captain that year, and rotated the As between 10 guys. Toews wore it for a just a stretch. He was named captain the following season.

To be technical, so did Patrick Kane. He wora an A on the last game of the season. It was his and Toews' rookie year.

To be fair the teams usually go's where the best players take them so it makes sense they wold have a letter as they're leading one way or another.

It's the worst when a plug is your captain they are never on the ice to talk to the refs. Plus it makes it awkward to bench them or put them in the pressbox

In past era's it was not at all common for younger guys to be named captain.

Ted Kennedy was named captain of the Maple Leafs at the age of 23 for the 49-40 season and I'm pretty sure he was the youngest captain ever** until Bobby Clarke, also 23, was named captain in 1973.

Jim Schoenfeld was then named captain of the Sabres at the age of 21 years 362 days on Sept 1/74.

** this is unofficial **

I know Landeskog was the youngest captain ever beating Crosby by a few months, but I thought someone else broke the record again since. Maybe McDavid?

Martin Lapointe was the unofficial captain that year. Toews was pegged as the next captain during his rookie year, but they didn’t want to commit and put the pressure on the kid. It was clearly Lapointe/Toews team from the get go.

Correct. McDavid overtook Landeskog by about 20 days after Landeskog overtook Crosby

If you're leading from the bench, you aren't a captain, you're a coach.

The salary cap probably put an end to that. These days you're either a star, a rookie or expendable.
