The game was fun to watch, but it wasn’t pretty. 5-3 baby Coyotes during regulation and that’s only with a goal in the final minute by Brodzinski. 0-2 during the 3-on-3 overtime. The baby Kings never felt like a serious threat to score. They had two 5-on-3s where it seemed they spent just as much time on the wrong end of the ice as on the right one. Finally, on the third 5-on-3 Kempe, Zykov, and Cernak were out there at the same time and you felt something good might happen and it did when after a few crisp passes among the Kings, Kempe directed it to Zykov, who rifled the puck into the net.

As a whole, there just didn’t seem to be much offensive skill in this group of forwards. They didn’t use each other that well overall, but it’s camp and that’s to be expected to some degree. Several times I saw forwards bunched up, but some like Zykov had good positioning.

VALENTIN ZYKOV AND ADRIAN KEMPE – Most skilled of our forwards, they didn’t make much of an impression on me until they were put together during the successful power play and late in the game. (Those two also looked good when teamed with Jonny Brodzinski.) In the last few minutes of the game and during the 3-on-3 Zykov and Kempe were used heavily, most often with camp invite Derek Arnold. In the 3-on-3 a Coyote had the puck and Kempe was almost even with him. With Kempe’s speed he should have caught up with him but he was just out of gas at that point and could only back-check him unsuccessfully and watch the Coyote score. There was little offensive threat from the baby Kings until Zykov and Kempe were finally put on the same line at the end.

JONNY BRODZINSKI – Hustled a lot during this game. One of the better forwards, his college experience showed, but I expect we’ll see a lot more effective play from him this season in Ontario than we saw last night.

KURTIS MACDERMID – This guy is definitely trying to make an impression. He was very noticeable, both good and bad. Not afraid to hit and hit hard. Sometimes got off track antagonizing opposing players instead of moving the play forward. If there was a scrap, chances are MacDermid was involved in some way. Made a few good defensive plays too. Overall, a better game from him than I expected and I think he made a decent case for himself.

SPENCER WATSON AND AUSTIN WAGNER - Watson was working hard to make something happen, but when he got close to the net he got surrounded and seemed to have a hard time utilizing his teammates to finish it off. He had a nice breakaway but shot it high. Wagner also made a couple of nice offensive plays and scored a goal. They both have some speed. Otherwise, okay play.

COACH MIKE STOTHERS – Intense guy. Just minutes into the game I saw him shouting at the players on the bench, “What are you waiting for? Get out there!!”

RYAN HORVAT – Good choice for captain.

ZAC LESLIE – The most polished of the defensemen. Not the highest ceiling, but he usually saw the play developing early and got in the right position to cover it. Gave up the first goal but it was a one-on-one (correction, two-on-one) with the Coyote coming with speed, so I don’t fault him for that. Good passes. Hard shot that created a couple of nice rebounds. Brodzinski scrambled to try to convert one of them. He was off-balance though and a couple of defenders tied him up and ended that good opportunity. There was a period of time in the 2nd period where it seemed like Leslie was out on the ice for every other shift. Stothers used him quite a bit. I would have liked to see more shut-down ability though. Solid overall but no standout strength.

PATRIK BARTOSAK – Solid in goal. Made some really nice saves.

Last spring's Manchester international rookie quartet (Lintuniemi-Finland, Zykov-Russia, Kempe-Sweden, and Brodzinski-USA) showed that their off-ice chemistry translated to on-ice now that they're finally all injury-free and able to play.

Some of the Coyotes showed off some beautiful stick-handling. Definitely had more skill than our guys.

The 3-on-3 overtime was exciting to watch. I wished it lasted longer, it was so entertaining.

I would grade last night’s performance a C-.

If I think of anything else, I’ll add it.

Thanks for the writeup PJ!

Honestly I'd be concerned for the Coyotes if they DIDNT outskill our prospects. Look at their camp lineup, tons of skill there.

Nice videos.

But now the rookie mini-camp is sponsored?
My reply to this post is sponsored by bacon.

Bacon. Just because.

Thanks for the write up PJ. You are awesome brother.

Happy to give my thoughts Jason (and Boba), but I was eager to ready yours. You didn't disappoint. Excellent observations and it was cool that you included a few Coyotes players. Also appreciated the graphic on the Kings' breakout.

Just checked your Twitter feed and had a laugh at this: I remember looking over and seeing three players apiece in the penalty boxes and one guy yelling that they needed bunk beds in there.

Since you also tweeted a link to it, here's Rich Hammond's recap of last night's game.

Looking forward to reading any posts or tweets from people going to this afternoon's game. Is anyone here planning on going?

ETA: Nick Ebert and Matt Schmaltz didn't play last night. I'd be interested to hear about their game today.

Bartosak was far and away the Kings best player in this game. It could have easily been much worse. Domi and Duclair were excellent for yotes.

Reading the play-by-play for yesterday's game and today's game, seems like the Kings rookies in both games have been giving up numerous odd-man chances and breakaways, and they're not generating much offensively.

The latter is true, but they didn't give up too many odd man chances to be quite honest. Lot of hard working shifts by Arizona and skill plays led to opportunities. Not a lot of clear cut breakdowns. I'd say the baby Kings won two out of the three periods last night. They just got beat on by some opportunistic players. All around decent defensively. Offensively was touch and go.
