Value of: Ristolainen

Buffalo can ill-afford to trade defensemen. So they'd probably want a Ristolainen caliber D in return.
A team with Eichel, Mittlestadt, Ristolainen, and Dahlin is a really strong base. They should keep him and hope for 1st OA.
Also look for a better goalie.

Can't see Buffalo having any interest in moving a good young dman. While his advanced stats and +/- look pretty terrible, I think it has more to do with playing big minutes on an awful team than any shortcomings in his game. What exactly isn't to like about his contract?

Great idea. Let's trade 1 of our 2 good defensemen for parts. Surely that will fix the Sabres.

I can't see Ristolainen (RHD) being traded.
He is their most important DMan, there is nobody else close on the squad or in the system. If the Sabres win the lottery and draft Dahlin (LHD), they'll have the best young DMan line in hockey.

I believe he plays both sides, nonetheless, they can separate the players into 2 lines.
On European ice he plays RHD, and that is very common, just like many play the off wing. In the NHL it will be much tougher. Because of the deep and wide zone, there is significantly less board play in international hockey, players are mostly attempted to be kept to the outside, and defensemen are happy to let a player sit out there. as they are much further from the net than in the NHL when put in the same position on the outside.
In the NHL it is the opposite. there is significant more board play due to the much smaller ice surface, and playing your off wing or off D means you are always facing the wrong way on puck battles. Even in the NHL, when you look at a PP opportunity, with the box and the defensive job being containment not chasing, D often switch sides on the offensive end. It has an advantage as long as you are not board battling.
So I expect he will switch over once he gets to the NHL.

Not a big fan of the guy, but they have nobody to replace him with and their primary need is D. So unless someone is giving up a better D, what's the point of dealing him?
That's an absurdly bad offer. At least TRY to make a decent offer, and not waste everyone's time.

BUF needs D and have cap space.
GM's don't make deals like this. HFB members do. Real GM's find out what the pick they are receiving or trading is, THEN make a deal. IMO, BUFF would be nuts to trade Risto for anything short of Dahlin- and EDM would be crazy to trade Dahlin. Getting a Zadina or Svechnikov would be great for any team, but BUF is desperately short on talented Dmen, and are doing OK on talented forwards. They need more top 4 dmen, and quality complimentary forwards.

Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.
I'm not a huge fan of him, but I don't think that it's his fault. He has the tools but his development has been terrible since the start. A guy who can put up points but lacks commitment away from the puck and sometimes lets emotions get the best of him during the game and does stupid shit.
With that said, he reminds me of a guy like Kadri. Someone who needs some leadership and a coach to sit down and actually appreciate him and give him the confidence that someone believes in him, and then to challenge him by playing him to his weakness as much as possible. Someone to help him grow up honestly. If you asked him I am 100% sure Risto wants to be a Sabre long term and that is a huge +. You need guys who are not 21 and younger who are willing to step up and be the vets to the new kids.
With all this said, I think this is a situation of the asset is more valuable to Buffalo than in trade. I think he can be fixed but at this point his value is not a franchise D, or a #1 D. I think his value is slightly higher than what Myers value was before he was traded. What needs to happen is Buffalo needs to add a few vets to the room who aren't scared to put the kids in their place when needed and a coaching staff to develop him instead of letting the players develop themselves.
IMO the biggest issue is naming Eichel captain but we will not go there to derail the thread.

I think theres an argument to be made that Buffalo would benefit from moving Risto but I don't think Edmonton has the pieces to make that deal work, both as a lateral change of scenery move and as a fill multiple depth roles deal
1) an equivalent defender or forward
2) a package of assets that would have a greater net value to the team than the loss of Risto, primarily thinking about high energy, fast, middle 6 players on good contracts; pkers; high end defensive specialists; quality face off guys; etc.
