It's my first ever thread on HFBoards and im a huge ranger fan so I decided to make a thread discussion about the future roster of the team. Who do you guys think replaces Brad Richards if and when the rangers buy him out after next season? At the moment we have a packed prospect core but who really comes in to replace Richards if and when he departs? Feel free to discuss your thoughts and opinions :)

What overpriced UFAs are on the market July 1?

Obviously a lot can change over the course of a full season. You never know whose stock will rise/fall from now until next June. It's also really hard to predict what could/will happen via trades or FA. Internally, though, one has to think that between Lindberg, Miller, and St. Croix at least one is going to be capable of top-9 minutes by 2014. The real question mark is Brassard, I think. How he performs this upcoming season is going to dictate a lot of what the Rangers do. If he can prove that last season wasn't just a honeymoon phase and can produce up to his abilities over the course of a full season then it makes Sather's job a lot easier. If he falls on his face, though, then 2nd line center is going to be something to be concerned about.

LOL yea Slats is going to be looking for a veteran player to sign for 9 years and bathe in money :laugh: We'll have to wait and see who is available, can't wait until we overpay another semi-big name and nhl.com has to think of another broadway pun title for an article about it :yo:

Thanks! And i believe that brassard is one of those crazy talented players who just needs equally talented linemen to play with and he will produce. Id say that if Lindberg makes the team AV should try them on the same line

Well, luckily Sather can only sign overpriced UFAs for 7 years nowadays.
 
Rangers will have roster players to re-sign next year. Topping the list--Lundqvist, Callahan, Girardi--all UFA's and Brassard and Del Zotto--RFA's--and then there's Stralman and possibly Boyle--two more UFA's and a backup goalie if Biron doesn't come back and Moore and Kreider two more RFA's. Even if the cap goes up quite a bit I don't know if the Rangers are going to have a lot of $ to play with.

The question should be whether or not Stepan and Brassard can fill the 12C. It's weird having two kids who have yet to make a concrete reputation for themselves as a top line center or even a 2nd line center for that matter.

Step will grow into it in time. He's a good enough of a professional athlete that he'll always find ways to live up to his potential given the right environment and even in a year when nothing was going right offensively, he was THE game changer for the entire middle to late stretch of the season when Nash was MIA.

Bassard has absolutely everything he needs to do well. The former sixth overall did fine in CBJ and turned things around in NYC and despite shaky years in CBJ, he's never fallen off the radar completely. Solid end to the season, best skater in the PO. Brassard was the complete opposite of Beaver last season in terms of energy and excitement to be playing hockey and with a chip on his shoulder, I think he'll do just fine in cementing himself as a 2C or better. He should get along well with AV being Quebecois and all.
 
If Brassard doesn't completely fall on his face they're fine with Stepan, Brassard, Lindberg, Miller, and possibly Boyle or Moore up the middle going forward. Use the money to lock up our UFA's. Brassard should only get a modest raise from the 3.5 million he's making now.
 
Miller, Lindberg, brassard one of them is the 3c. Stepan is gonna be the 1c, who is a good fit for 2c?

Hopefully Lindberg steps up and finally gives us a very good two-way 3rd line center, and Brassard and Stepan solidify themselves as a viable one-two-punch for years to come.

One can dream, right?

I'm more high on him than most here. He took a huge step forward this past season. He went from potential 4th line center to possible 2nd/good 3rd line center. Once he gets here, a lot of folks here will be going "who is this kid?" the same way they said that about Stepan.
