Okay so I'm bored and missing hockey way too much. So I was reading an article about the games next year in Sochi and there was a link to an article about some of the players who played together in World Juniors, and it mentioned Richards and Perry having a fight during the Mem Cup playoffs after they'd played together in that tourney. SO I googled the fightto find the video again and under the replies was a link to an old HF Board, Canadian Juniors thread from July 7 2010 "QUestion about Kadri" with someone asking what kind of player Kadri would for the Leafs and one of the replies says that Kadri has a reputation for embellishing and that is something he needs to end before he hits the NHL. The poster then uses Corey Perry as an example of a player who had a bad rep in juniors and seems to have changed when he got in the NHL. But the example he used was the reason that Mike Richards fought him:

comment:

..When Corey Perry played in London, he was a diving machine who was hated around the league for just that, along with his punch and run game. Nothing enraged opposition fans more about Perry than his penchant for face washing opponants who were already tied up with other Knights during scrums. This was the reason that Mike Richards went after him in their famous scrap. Richards pulled him out of the scrum after he was rabbit punching a Ranger teammate who was tied up with someone else. ..

It appears that around the 13 sec. mark , Richards tries to get Perry to fight and Perry won't go and backs away, but at 19 seconds, he sucker punches a Ranger who is already engaged and that sets Richards off and he goes after him.

I've seen the fight before, but didn't know until now the reason why

And he hasn't changed...he still chases down anybody who goes after one of his teammates.

And hockey can't get here fast enough. Thank God for Ray Donovan ...bright spot of the week.

Great find! I knew about the fight ... it often comes up on articles about the best of the best in the 2003 draft class ... but like you never knew why ... this is really good insight

It's so unfortunate that there is no video from the first time that season that Richie fought Perry. He ragdolled hiim, and it was beautiful. Afterwards, Richie said he needed to stop Perry's chirping and greasy moves. Perry was especially hated for pretending to drop his gloves and then prancing away when the opponent dropped his.

This was, and still is, my favorite fight off all-time, in terms of seeing an annoying little bugger getting what he deserves. There's been better fights between heavyweights (Coxe and Probert was awesome, not to mention a minor league fight involving Mike Angelstad) but watching someone like Perry eating fist was highly rewarding and still is to this day. Coming from Mike Richards, who I was very impressed with before he even was drafted, made it even more special.
