I've never understood why teams don't rest their starting goalie in blowout games, similar to how football teams usually rest their starting quarterback when they are ahead by a large amount.
Let's say that the score is 6-1 going into the third period. Why does the winning team put their starting goalie in net for the third period? Wouldn't it make sense to play the backup since it is pretty much already a guarantee they are going to win? They don't have to worry about their starting goalie getting injured in the third period in a blowout game, and give him a chance to rest a bit more and get ready for next game.
