Yeah I mean if he continues to come cheap I'd love to keep him around. I wanted to keep him through the expansion draft and I like what he brings. If you can keep him for around $1M then you absolutely do it. Of course, there may be a team that makes him a silly offer depending on how this year unfolds; as much as I like him I don't want to commit too much to him.

It’s really going to depend on him. I’d love to have him stay, but I’m sure they have pretty much a set price on what they plan to pay a 4C.
If Rooney and his agent aren’t looking for a big windfall, I’d say he’ll be back with us. If he prices himself out, they’ll let him walk.

And given the garbage we've had at that position since Moore and Boyle departed, he's a welcome addition.
Chips in a goal here or there, kills penalties, plays with an edge.
So sure I'd keep him, especially since Justin Richards has been underwhelming in the AHL so far.

Who is a better fourth line center than Rooney? You want four above average centers but no team has that.
Attacking a straw man doesn't help your case. No one said or implied he's Carbonneau or even a special player.
He's a fourth line player who plays hard, hits, blocks shots, forechecks well, backchecks well, kills penalties, and can actually win a damn face-off. Having a functional fourth line is important and he's doing a good job of playing within himself and contributing in all the ways that we ask of him.
What's your idea of an upgrade at 4C? And even if you upgrade at 4C that isn't necessarily a reason not to try to retain Rooney for cheap.

Nic dowds extension should be a guide for Rooney. Dowd signed 1.3x3, Rooney can settle like 1.2x3 or 4 without question. The guy worked his bag off to get to the NHL and he isn't going to mail it in. He's a long term 4c guy here
