Reilly Smith and Ryan Lindgren package deal.

Pittsburgh is retaining 25% of Smith’s $5M cap hit. $3.75M for Smith. Rangers retain 50%. Smith becomes a $1.875M player. Smith has an eight team NTC list. The Rangers acquired Smith from Pittsburgh for a 2nd round pick in 2027 and a 5th round pick in 2025. Lindgren is at $4.5M. Rangers retain 50%. $2.25M for Lindgren. $4.125M combined for both players.

Want a 1st round pick, 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick using the Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway trade template from Washington to Boston from 2023. The Caps took on Craig Smith’s expiring contract. A third team broker Minnesota was involved in retain 50% of Orlov for a 5th. The Rangers have enough space to retain on both players. Thank you Pat Verbeek.

The first round pick doesn’t have to be 2025. Edmonton and Toronto don’t have 2025 1st round picks. 2026 is fine. 2026 10 top protection and pick goes to 2027 is fine.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported during the Penguins-Rangers game that the Rangers are not finished subtracting players and Emily mentioned Smith snd Lindgren in addition to Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko.

Any takers for the Smith and Lindgren package with 75% salary retention for Smith and 50% salary retention for Lindgren?

1sr round pick, 2nd round pick and 4th round pick.

Lindgren would've gotten a decent package if he didn't implode lately. At this point he's not worth a lot... hopefully he can start playing better now that Trouba the liability is off the team.

Honestly the fact that Smith keeps getting passed around and continues to disappoint wherever he goes makes me think teams should be leery of trading for him. I’m not sure what it is, maybe he’s still pouting that he’s not playing for Vegas anymore, but I think it should be a serious red flag for anyone potentially looking at him.

Then again, maybe Vegas themselves would be interested in trading back for him with money retained

I think that's a kind of odd "template" to use. The circumstances and details of that deal were very different that what you're talking about here.

That said...I'd have interest in Reilly Smith as a double-retained player from a Canucks perspective. They don't even necessarily need that though. I'd be open to the idea of just swapping him with someone like Heinen "as is". Heinen hasn't really found the right fit, and Smith would at least be a fresh shot at filling that...well..."filler" role in the Top-6 once JT Miller is back in full force. I could see him playing alright as "3rd wheel" with either of JT or Petey.

I'd have interest in Lindgren too, but i don't think he's what Canucks are looking for. Probably not worth the cost to acquire either.

I think he's just one of those wildly inconsistent players. In his own head sort. And he's obviously slowing down and getting older on top of that.

But i'd still be willing to try it. His results still seem worse than his process the last couple years. And it's still not even that bad imo. He's just obviously never going to hit the heights he hit earlier in his career. But he's still a generally smart player who...other than Pittsburgh, seemed able to mesh with a variety of linemates.

Even before he really took off with Vegas, he seemed pretty hit or miss year over year. But retained to depth player $$$ or even just with NYR taking back other salary to make it equivalent to that, i think he's still an alright gamble. As long as you're not expecting a "key player" at this point. Versatile depth with a bit of upward mobility is still a great thing to acquire toward the deadline.

We'd rather have the expiring contract, a pick, or a young player/prospect. No interest in any older players with term.

Smith hasn't been great this year, but he played his best game of the year on Friday. Coincidence that it happened after Trouba was traded? Maybe. But that whole line (Smith, Zib and Kreider) looked good for a change, so we'll see.

Totally understandable. Though it's not like Heinen's deal is a super onerous one next year either. But obviously...Rangers are looking to create future cap space and flexibility to reshape the roster right now.

Heinen is a weird one, because it's not that big of a contract. It was largely lauded as one of the "steals" of the offseason. But it just hasn't meshed in Vancouver. Whether that's system/linemates/whatever. He is clearly capable of being a good, versatile complementary player in the right fit. But i'd understand why Rangers wouldn't want to gamble on that.

If the Rangers are keen on moving Smith or Lindgren they might want roster players in return instead of picks as it would be a bad look to just pack it up for the season considering that New York still holds a wild card spot despite their struggles lately.

If I had a choice i would keep Lindgren and send Smith away in trade as Smith just hasn’t worked in New York.

Seems like an over payment from anther team to acquire them both and pay that much. Even with retention, I don't see teams thinking both are enough to push them over the top, and to part with a 1st and 2nd, you have to feel like these pieces are the best available for those assets, and I just don't think they are the best options available.

Other than 75% off, Smith hasn't done anything to show that he's more valuable than when we acquired him. If he played like he did against the Penguins on Friday, that would be a different story.

So he’d be the Miller filler?

Smith is pretty much as-advertised. Points-wise, he's producing at his usual rate--on pace for that 40-50 point range he's always been around.

I think Drury was hoping he'd catch fire with Kreider and Zibanejad, but that hasn't happened. He'd a good complementary player on a good line, but he's not a play driver on his own. If Kreider and Mika were consistent, his numbers would probably look a bit better.

For a playoff team, he's the kind of guy that doesn't disrupt chemistry that teams could plug in to different spots. At 50% retained, he'd be a good get.

Maybe a 2nd/3rd and a B-prospect.

Are these guys disliked by teammates? Are the Rangers really going to torpedo their season? Are these guys genuinely addition by subtraction? The Rangers just signed Shesterkin but now they will send away productive players for futures? This sounds unlikely to me.

I get your reasonable observation, but track record is vets generally not cutting it. Could be bern is right, usually energy of youth > vet experience

We never should have done most of those rentals past few years
this chips away a bit at that
