Refs have got to stop breaking up fights

The refs are a joke. Ritchie and Kassian were still going at it hard and the refs jump in. There's no reason for that. All it does is anger both players. They may take a run at someone else in this game since they feel like they didn't get their money's worth. I love fights, but I also don't want to see guys get hurt. When the refs jump in like that all they are doing is setting up one of the fighters to get hurt.

Earlier this year it happened between Buffalo and Boston. Carrier and McQuaid fought, the refs held McQuaid and Carrier just hammered him. Let them fight, especially if it's even. That was a pathetic half a** attempt at breaking it up. When you break up a fight mid fight you completely take away players abilities to PROTECT THEMSELVES.

Refs don't break up fights, they don't even touch the players. Their job is to stand and watch. You're mistaking them with the linesmen

Around 2014 linesmen were told to break up fights depending on the reason they started. iirc this was revealed by Dreger

It's pretty clear the league is slowly trying to get rid of fighting and it's working. The refs have been mandated to jump in when they can.

Well you know what I meant haha. Yeah I think I heard something about it. I didn't like them breaking up the fight because both guys were throwing hard. If one of the players had their arms held, the other could have pummeled him. That would not have been good. The Boston-Buffalo situation earlier this year could have had a bad ending as well. They need to decide what exactly they want to break up. If it's a mis-match, fine. But if it's a Ritchie-Kassian situation, they have do a better job, or someone is going to get really hurt.

1: Refs shouldn't break up fights

2: IF the Refs are breaking up a fight, throwing a punch over the ref should get you tossed. Someone is gonna get hurt.

A linesman (most of them are huge, very strong guys) had a death grip on McQuaid's wrist earlier this year while the (Buffalo) guy got free of his guy and punched McQuaid in the face repeatedly. Ridiculous.

How about the players just show a tiny bit of self-control? You think a lot of players a going for revenge fouls?

Because of things like this.

As soon as a referee jumps in, players should immediately stop fighting, and failing to do so should result in a game misconduct.

The zebras jumped in waaay prematurely in the Ritchie-Kassian fight tonight. Kassian was looking for a taker since the warmups, and Ritchie was having a terrible game and looking to do something positive for his team. Right when they really got going the zebras jump in at the worst time and both players were still throwing a bunch of haymakers while being separated. WTF?

Breaking up fights is the right thing to do, because it is not allowed. It is against the rules to fight. That's why players get a 5-minute penalty. Because it's against the rules

Refs told to help with player safety. This was to protect Kassian from taking a savage beating.

Jumping in the middle of 2 guys punching each other is way more dangerous for everyone included than letting them finish the fight.

Crosschecking and hooking aren't allowed either, but you don't see refs grabbing the players and stopping them from doing it. You just get the penalty afterwards.

Besides, at its most basic, a hockey game is a form of entertainment. Let 'em fight.

At its most basic hockey is about skating, shooting, passing, stickhandling, checking and goaltending.

No, but if players keep cross-checking their opponent, they do stop it.

I remember watching Kesler get knocked out by Dom last year because the linesman got to Kesler first and tied his arms up meanwhile Domi cracked him. It's dangerous and leads to more injuries than letting two guys go at it uninterrupted. Step in once they get tired or a guy is in a particularly dangerous position.

What's funny is that the NHL knows people love a good fight, so they will show clips of fights to market playoff matchups and create excitement for games. But they are afraid of lawsuits due to concussions, so they have to take measures to reduce fighting that they can point to as them taking responsibility for player health when they are sued.

I think the players are hypocrites that also appreciate fighting (for the most part) and want it in the game, but then as soon as they get a concussion they turn around and act dumbfounded as to how it happened and act like the NHL hid something from them by not warning them they could get injured playing hockey. And of course everyone sides with the players over the league and simultaneously supports the players suing the league and complains that the NHL is breaking up fights.

They probably try to break up fights faster because all the old fighters dying so young and having jambled brains. Being sued for head damage is a big problem in pro sports right now.

But if they really wanted to get rid of it there would be 5 game suspensions after a fight but that would upset too many of the 'oldschool' fans. So they are trying to toe the line of not upsetting people that need to see fights or they get upset while looking like they are trying to prevent fights/head injuries.

That Ritchie/Kassian fight looked dangerous, like one of the four people was in for some hurt. It would be safer to let them get tired and hand out game misconducts for fights that are staged. Has to be worse with both players starting well rested vs halfway through a shift.

Like the majority of their job, linesmen have a procedure to follow when breaking up a fight. They are not supposed to attempt to break it up while punches are being thrown, for their own safety, unless one player looks to be at a clear disadvantage. For whatever reason on this one, they simply jumped the gun.

If the league wanted to stop fighting they would auto eject any player who gets in a fight, and also look at multi-game suspensions. I think they they should. Hockey fights are ridiculous and detract from the sport and its growth.
