It is too rich from Buffalo's side.

-Detroit may be dropping 8 spots to 16 in Round 1

-Buffalo drops 24 spots from first round to near end of second round

-Then Detroit gains 160 spots from 200 to 41

-Even if you take out the 41, Buffalo doesn't make this deal.

Dropping 8 spots would get Detroit another lower first and maybe a mid 2nd, and that is it. You never get as much as you think for dropping a few spots and 8 spots is more than most teams trade down anyhow. Also generally not worth it to teams, as every team has lists of guys they are taking at their own spot, and another 5-7 names of players they would take near their slot, and lots of times the players in the 6-16 area are viewed about the same as one another and sometimes teams have a popular top 10 pick in the later end as teams can disagree pretty heavily on where guys belong.

Funny how Sabres fans are saying pass...

No way I do this as a Wings fan. Make the pick at 8 and hope to get a solid player.

Detroit needs home runs at this point, not a bunch of base hits.

Better chance we get a top 6 center or top 4 defender at 8 than 16.

8 + 52 for 9 + 41 might be doable. But even then I probably wouldn’t do that.

No I don’t give a shit about draft value charts. So don’t quote me and try to use those to confirm or debunk that proposal.
Moving down/up one pick almost never makes sense.

If Buffalo traded from 9 to 8 it'd be because they wanted somebody they were afraid Detroit was gonna take, and if Detroit was gonna take that guy, they're not going to trade with Buffalo, who is apparently trying to get the same guy Detroit wants.

This is not a draft where 8 and 9 are seperate tiers. Detroit HF posters can say pass but Yzerman would take that and run. And Kevyn Adams would probably block his number for suggesting this.

This draft has a pretty large tier of solid players after the top 5, and mock drafts are all over the map for the next 12-15 prospects.

As a sabres fan, I would not be surprised to see Adams draft someone at 8 that very well might have been available at 16, so losing an extra 1st and dropping 11 spots in the 2nd round is not appealing.

But I can definitely understand why Detroit would be hesitant as well.

Most of all the up/down trades only happen because the two teams talk to each other and ask who they each are taking and if they are taking different players and the higher team can still get their guy at the lower spot, then they trade. Pretty much every team has their spot and knows what guy they want, which is why there is so few of these trades in the higher end of the draft.

Better chance you get a good player with

16, 28, 41

than

8, 52, 200

The chances of 200 even being an NHL player is extremely slim. The difference between 8 & 16 isn't as big as you think it is.
It's 8 more players available for Detroit's scouts to choose from, and considering what they've done with Seider/Raymond/Edvinsson, I'll take the extra choices.

If you're that high on the scouting staff wouldn't you want more picks in the top 60? That's way more cracks at getting a top player. Or are you not confident in their ability to draft outside of the top 10?

16 + 28 + 41 >>> 8 + 52 + 200

From a value standpoint the trade is in favor of Detroit. The 8th pick & 16th pick aren't that far off from each other. The 200th pick barely has any value. Any smart GM would run away with that trade.
