Looks like the fans are indeed back...

Saturday night’s eastern time zone prime-time broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada, featuring a matchup between the division rivals Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs, pulled in an astonishing 3,317,000 viewers. That was up16 per cent from the previous record of 2,875,000 (set April 7, 2007, when the Leafs knocked off the Canadiens to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot) and a 44 per cent rise from the same weekend in January, 2012.

Even the CBC’s half-hour pre-game broadcast attracted 2,106,000 viewers.

Leafs Nation is a sleeping giant. Those numbers will get smashed again when the Leafs make the playoffs.

We'll get 7 billion once we make playoffs, everyone is a Leafs fan on the inside ;)

That's a crazy number! but sort of not surprising though. Just wait until the Leafs make the playoffs ;) We're going to smash records.

Where are all those "I'm done with hockey" crowd I kept hearing calling in to Prime time sports all lockout long? Lol

These are the people who think "I am not going to go to the arena and watch because I be giving them my money. Or I am not going to go to a bar and watch because that will show I am supporting them too. I am just going to watch it in my basement and the blinds up so no one knows" lol

^^
Its great hockey numbers!

Just a completely unrelated note, Big bang Theory draws about 4 million Canadians weekly. Im pretty sure thats about twice as much as any other show

Hard to say.

Right now most of the crowds are reactionary - hockey is in the news, there's a buzz everywhere that it's back, and people are talking etc.

But what happens after that? Do people stick? In most Canadian/big markets I think they do, of course.

But let's not pretend that the lockout didn't have some massive implications for some of the smaller market teams down South. Some franchise have, and will be, hit very, very hard. It might be some time before we hear about it though.

Spot on.

While there will be many more Leafs fans tuning in once the team makes the playoffs, the overall interest in the team will pick up, including from fans of other Canadian teams interested to see how the Leafs get on.

Hated. Adored. But Never ignored - Leafs Nation

I actually know 3 people that got "done with hockey" at the last lockout and they never came back. 1 of them plays, but wouldn't watch.

Keep in mind that sports in general appeal mainly to males, as oppose to many tv shows. But still I expect these numbers to skyrockets if the Leafs make the playoffs.

As long as they are happy, that's fine. I love hockey, and am not going to torment myself under a pretense of teaching the league a lesson.

I honestly think this says nothing. The NHL gets very little directly from the number of viewers on TV.

Get back to me when the league wide seasonal attendance comes in.
