Looking for some help on my annual rating project. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you watched most of their games last season. So the three areas that I'm seeking input are:
  • Player Role: This is really what type of player they are, and specifically where they would slot into the average NHL team, not necessarily the Rangers. So they could be Elite/All-Star, 1st liner, 2nd liner, 3rd liner, 4th liner/Scratch, Minor leaguer, High-end prospect, Low-end prospect. (don't rate 1-5 here, just list what role they are)
  • Skating: Straight ahead speed should be the primary consideration. Rate on the provided scale where 1 is the lowest, 5 is the highest and 3 is average.
  • Defense: Overall defensive skill but primarily gap control and using their stick and body to neutralize an attacker. Rate on the provided 1-5 scale.
The Scale:
5 - Well above average
4 - Above average
3 - Average
2 - Below Average
1 - Well below average
(In reality some player could be a 0 or 6, for example McDavid would rate as a 6 in skating, this would be an extremely rare case and most teams won't have a 0 or 6 in any area)

I need only 2-3 submissions, and the help is extremely appreciated!

For reference, here are the players that I'm looking for:
Boo Nieves
Steven Fogarty
Mika Zibanejad
Filip Chytil
Micheal Haley
Brett Howden
Ryan Strome
Greg McKegg
Lias Andersson
Tim Gettinger
Chris Kreider
Brendan Lemieux
Phillip Di Giuseppe
Artemi Panarin
Julien Gauthier
Kaapo Kakko
Pavel Buchnevich
Jesper Fast
Jacob Trouba
Marc Staal
Libor Hajek
Brendan Smith
Ryan Lindgren
Adam Fox
Tony DeAngelo

Boo Nieves

Role: 13th forward
Skating: 3
Defense: 2 (decent stick work and good energy)

Steven Fogarty

Role: 13th forward
Skating: 3
Defense: 2 (unkown quantity due to low number of GP but seems to lack presence, especially on the boards)

Mika Zibanejad

Role: Elite/ All Star
Skating: 4
Defense: 4 (really impressed with his stick work and positioning, especially between the faceoff circles)

Filip Chytil

Role: 3rd liner regular season / 2nd liner post play in
Skating: Between 3 and 4, can't decide. He can be surprisingly clumsy on his skates
Defense: 2 (awareness and physicality must improve if he wants to play C)

Michael Haley

Role: Minor Leaguer
Skating: 1
Defense: 2

Brett Howden:

Role: 4th liner
Skating: 3 (could be a 4 actually in straight up speed)
Defense: 2 (good energy and jump in the play but is undisciplined and gives the puck away in the zone too much)

Ryan Strome:

Role: 2nd liner (just barely, point totals be damned. But his good start at the Islanders needs to be taken into account also.)
Skating: 3
Defense: 3 (benefit of the doubt here because he takes a lot of bad penalties and his stick work is terrible. Has good positioning and isn't afraid to block shots)

Greg McKegg:

Role: 4th liner/scratch
Skating: 2 (isn't slow but he is not a good skater and his edge work is not good)
Defense: 2

Lias Andersson:

Role: 4th liner
Skating: 2 (actually isn't a terrible skater but speed leaves a lot to be desired)
Defense: 2 (not engaged in his own zone and was weak on the boards in his time here)

Chris Kreider:

Role: 1st liner
Skating: 5 (I understand 4 but gave him the benefit of the doubt)
Defense: 4 (one of the best board players in the league, unbelievable take away rate in the Offensive zone)

Brendan Lemieux:

Role: 3rd liner
Skating: 3
Defense: 3

Phillip Di Giuseppe:

Role: 4th liner/ scratch
Skating: 3
Defense: 2 (lacks physicality on the boards for a bottom sixer and is clumsy with his stick)

Artemi Panarin:

Role: Elite
Skating: 4 (lacks top end speed but his edge work and balance is sensational)
Defense: 2 (actually good with poke checks)

Julien Gauthier:

Role: 3rd liner
Skating: 4
Defense: 3 (but generous here but he's very physical and rushes his man on the point which is useful for transition. We'll see more definitive proof next year)

Kappo Kakko:

Role: 3rd liner during RS / 2nd liner post play in
Skating: 3 (speed must improve to compliment his good overall skating)
Defense: 2 (showed improvements during the play ins but I'm not overly concerned tbh, I'd rather see him develop at the other end next year)

Pavel Buchnevich:

Role: 1st liner
Skating: 3 (good speed but edges aren't as good and can struggle to turn sharply at the half wall and in corners)
Defense: 2 (can be a 3 sometimes but the engagement isn't always there
...not disciplined but that isn't necessarily a bad thing in his case)

Jesper Fast:

Role: 3rd liner
Skating: 3 (speed isn't top end but he is quick and possesses an overall strong skating game. I could see a 4 here)
Defense: 4

Jacob Trouba:

Role: Top 4 D
Skating: 3
Defense: 3 (good on the boards, good with his stick and is very physical. But his positioning is weak and gets drawn to the sides too often instead of clearing the crease)

Marc Staal:

Role: 7D / Scratch
Skating: 1
Defense: 1 (he's still capable on the boards but weak everywhere else)

Libor Hajek:

Role: Minor Leaguer
Skating: 2 (jury is out but he's always playing catch up with the play so it's difficult to gauge his speed and overall balance)
Defense: 1 (needs big improvement in all areas, especially net front)

Brendan Smith:

Role: 6D
Skating: 2 (actually good hussle and surprisingly ok edges all things considered...but is very slow)
Defense: 2 (pretty much the same as Staal. Good on the boards and better in front of the net but can lose his man easily and has poor control of his stick)

Ryan Lindgren:

Role: 3rd pairing D
Skating: 3 (just about)
Defense: 3 (good shot blocker and great at applying pressure but needs to be better with the puck behind the net)

Adam Fox:

Role: Top 4 D (should be top pair this time next year)
Skating: 4
Defense: 3 (needs to better in front of the net but is solid in most facets)

Tony DeAngelo:

Role: Top 4 D
Skating: 5 (best skater alongside CK in my opinion, great speed, edges and balance. Could accept a 4 here but I think his skating is elite)
Defense: 2 (honestly not as bad as people believe but is not reliable and is weak around the net and reckless overall. I think he could top out as an average player in his own zone)
