Rasmus Sandin vs. Sean Durzi

Leafs fan here. Got into a debate with a buddy (and noted Dubasite) on who either of us would rather have going forward. He’s beating the drum of Sandin and I think Sandin is absolutely awful. I would much rather have Durzi over him and I told him that Durzi is quite easily the better player. He disagreed and it’s quite obviously he’s grasping at every single straw to try and defend Dubas. So I told him I’d create a poll to show him the delusion and now I ask you guys, who would you rather have, Rasmus Sandin or Sean Durzi?

How is Durzi going to come back from injury? That's it. That's the poll in a nutshell. If he comes back well, he wins my vote. If not, i go with Sandin.

But it's basically a guesstimating gambles poll. The better player coming off injury? Or the worse player healthy? Pick your poison.

If i'm forced to make the gamble...i got Durzi all day. He's just a lot more dynamic.

I don't see the allure of Sandin.
He is going to be a pedestrian player.

Durzi is likely nothing to write home about either.

The fact you need to call someone a ‘Dubasite’ does nothing to validate your point. It shows your bias and that you’re less likely to acknowledge anything positive while Dubas is GM.

I’m taking Durzi. Had great #’s and did well as the main powerplay option.

Calling Sandin absolutely awful is, in itself, ‘absolutely awful’. At the moment he’s not better than Muzzin, Rielly or Giordano so his usage has been limited. Hard to say one way or the other whether he’s very good or very bad. You guys always seem to omit that when he was healthy last year / before Giordano came over, he was great and killed his third pairing minutes. He’s just yet to get the opportunity to see what he can do with a bigger role to find out what the leafs have. Durzi has had that opportunity and did well with it. So I’ll go for the sure thing in Durzi.

...been the more productive player...played significantly more minutes, significantly more critical minutes...made the team...oh, and he can actually skate and not look like a Hobbit slugging through Quicksand...just that stuff...

I think if anything the difference between the two right this moment is we all know exactly what Durzi's identity and calling card is.

And while you can't really penalize Sandin for not cracking that lineup yet, it's unfair to hold Durzi down because he got the opportunity.

I mean I'd be telling your friend it's yet TBA but you can't really argue against a guy who was playing the Drew Doughty role on a playoff team with balls and swagger.

Simply incorrect. Sandin was a roster regular for the Leafs last year, playing in 51 games. He played every single regular season game that he was healthy for. He had two separate injuries which caused him to miss time.

He was a healthy scratch in the playoffs, likely because the Leafs had traded for Giordano.

The intent of this post is not to argue one way or the other, but rather to point out that Sandin was a legitimate roster player for the Leafs last year. Sandin lost his job to a deadline addition and that says something about where his game was at, but your point about cracking the lineup is not accurate.

Sandin has been plagued by injuries. That was certainly one of the reasons he never dressed in the play-offs. Recency bias in full effect here. Five years from now, I will be shocked if Sandin isn't considered the better player whether he is with the Leafs or not.

Okay, I lied when I said every single game. He played 51 out of the 53 games he was healthy for. Two whole games lol.

Point stands, he was a roster regular.

He didn't elevate himself above the #6 in the eyes of the coach during that time, but he played so much and well enough that I literally forgot about the scratches. He wasn't some kid on the bubble, he was our #6 defenseman before the trade deadline and he did quite a good job of it. Quality number six, but the Leafs have high aspirations and traded for big name defensive depth, which is what pushed Sandin out of the lineup. Rielly-Muzzin-Giordano is a tough nut to crack and that's a big part of why he hasn't signed yet. Honestly, I've been making arguments on the Leafs board that he HAS been given a really good chance to show what he's got and the lack of fireworks means we should cool the hype train down a bit.

He's a good hockey player, but he's still a young defenseman with a suspect defensive game and could really stand to be a better skater. Thinks the game very well and modern puck mover+PP specialist type, but needs to improve a lot to be a player of any note.

I think it's difficult to compare talents in such vastly different circumstances but it is difficult to ignore Sandin is simply less developed at the very least

It's difficult to assume Durzi would have been any more successful with us. Sandin was coming along nicely before being derailed by injury.

So the Op kind of comes off heavily biased but I'd I'd rather have the player I know. Doesn't matter much because we probably lose him any way.

Well duh, if Mark Giordano wants to play for 800k of course the Leafs are going to extend him. Feel free to read my other post where I discuss the shortcomings in Sandin's game, if that's the point you're trying to make. But last I checked, depth on defense was a good thing.

Durzi. Although that’s more due to the Sabres needing RHD across the whole organization.

I wanted the Sabres to draft both in their draft year. I figured Durzi would have fallen more though due to him being his second time through the draft.

Being familiar with both, I prefer Sandin. Durzi has developed better than I expected though. Kind of a toss up, and as a Leaf fan, with our D as it is, not sure either is really the perfect fit; both probably in a similar position on this team.

OP (and poster directly above) is the type of Leaf fan that is the reason for everyone thinking Leaf fans are psychotic freaks. I don't like Dubas, but some people have such an obsession with hating Dubas that you'd think they belong in a psych ward.
