Rantanen doing his best to reduce his next contract's AAV—a true team player.
He's not losing any money even if he went pointless until end of season. He's still getting his UFA money from a team of his choosing.

That's a little extreme. Of course his play affects his next contract.
Marginally. Everyone understands he went abruptly to a completely new system with less ice time and his analytics aren't even bad. They would just assume that with a summer and full training camp he'd adjust to a new club much better. One that is a better fit.

nah, its just canes and especially Aho being utter shit atm. he will be traded to contender and bounce back
It's probably easier to adjust to a freewheeling team where the stars are allowed to do what they want and stay on the ice forever and have a top5 player in the league centering you, than going to the only Soviet era team in the league where everyone grinds the corners and cycles endlessly with equal ice time.

Necas is the one who won a lot of money with his trade, because on Avs he can show he has 100p+ potential. Even if the Avs don't end up keeping him because he'll end up wanting Rantanen money or more because the cap goes up. On the Canes he'd just continued being a perennial 65p man because of the system.

People will pay more for the sure thing than your assumption.

Make no mistake Rantanen is going to get paid. He might settle for less for a better fit, but if it's only money he is after the man will get it.

Tons of desperate teams in free agency. Every year once the market opens multiple teams piss away millions on players that don't deserve it.

Carolina are really setting him up for success by moving away from Aho and having Jack freaking Roslovic center him…

Mikko must want to jump off a bridge.

Or they'll think he's a product of MacKinnon and Makar and not worth the money.

Rantanen is still likely to get paid, but his performance will limit his options in terms of what teams will make that ultra high offer. The true competitors will probably look to spend the top dollar elsewhere or be less likely to make room for Rantanen. The bottom feeder/middling teams with lots of cap space looking to succeed and get out of rebuilds will pay still.

I agree. Even if he is a Mack point merchant, there’s still value in players that can play with star players. Not everyone can play with a star and produce.
Yeah don't acquire Rantanen and think he will be the guy, the results won't be anything like in Colorado. However, on an offensive team and playing with a playdriving star forward he will put up big numbers.

In one game Necas tied Rantanen's total point production since the trade.....
And I'm thrilled about that. I'm hoping Czechs can get two top 10 scorers going into 2026 Olympics. He's at 11 now. Pasta is flying. Czechs need this.lol

Let's just revisit your opinion once he is signed and then we can try to count how much money he lost.
We don't need to revisit this. It's a fact that NHL contracts are based on performance.

Who do you think gets paid more based on their playoff run; Rantanen with 40 points and a Conn Smythe or Rantanen with 2 points and -10?

I'd say NHL GMs pay attention to how the players are playing... that's their job.

The worse Rants plays (and I want him to do amazing wherever he goes), the more chance there is he signs with Avs again for less. I think Landy is not going to come back, so that's 7 million/year right there. Give Rants 3 more and get him at 10 million a year.

It's my pipe dream.

The Avs are spending Landy’s $7m.

He’s been on LTIR for 3 years.

They wouldn’t be able to activate him today, they would be over the cap.

it speaks to chemistry and how just having great players doesn't mean you'll have a great team or have success.

Definitely a misjudgement on Carolina's part. I've only watched 1 game but he seems like he doesn't fit with the system at all. I do wonder if anything changes if this trade happened before training camp.

People were sucking on Tlusty's c*** after this trade, but it looks like he got sold a bill of goods for an expired product.

Rantanen is proving he was a product of MacK and Makar and Carolina has zero star power and Rantanen doesn't drive the game. Sakic rightfully read the room here and traded him before making a terrible offer, just like Tampa did with Stamkos. Colorado doesn't look like it missed a beat with Necas.

Tidy bit of work by colorado.
Probably not a shot on Canes or RBA but Necas was asked how comfortable he is feeling with the Avs system. He said "We play a system that kinda fits me I would say".

Also this was nice to see :

Maybe. I agree it will likely effect the contract marginally. Time will tell I supposed.

I disagree with your 'assume' sentence. He has only played on 2 teams, one of which playing with Makar and MacKinnon. There may be concern that he cannot carry a line as much as we once thought.

Maybe his next team will be a better fit maybe it won't. 3 points in 8 games is not worth the same as the player we've seen prior to the trade. But we all know that.
