I hate the salary cap.

Also, Milan Hejduk got screwed. He never made more than 4M in a season.

Now that I think about it, this is probably what's been driving my disdain for how much Mikko is going to get. Mikko's a much better player than Hejduk, but 10M/season better?
You should love the salary cap. It's why the Avs got Devon Toews, and probably also why they were able to get MacKinnon and Kadri to play for dirt cheap.

I wish it were more a soft cap system like the NBA where you always have room to sign your own players, but alas, I think the Avs have been fairly smart when it comes to cap management, but then again I think they've had to be because ownership isn't nearly as willing to bail them out of their mistakes like, say, Vegas.

We lost Rob Blake, Adam Foote, Alex Tanguay and Peter Forsberg because of the salary cap. F*** the salary cap.

I like salary caps as a concept. Look at the MLB right now.

But god damn, why is it every time they implement them or make them stricter, they absolutely hose great Colorado teams?

The Avs were traditionally a top 5 spending club before the cap was introduced.

f*** the salary cap.

f*** poor teams.

f*** parity.
The Avs bled a lot of solid depth over the years to NYR and other higher spending teams.

The Avs were more middle of the road until the top guys started making like 10 millions a year.

Why don't we, as a team owned by one of the richest men on the planet, simply eat the poorer teams such as "Columbus" and "Winnipeg"?

Not that I think the Avs are going to trade him, but I don’t get where the “they should have traded him and won’t get nothing now” crowd is coming from.

They will get a kings ransom if they fall out of the race and want to trade him, either as a rental to someone or to a rebuilding team looking for a longer term add.

Avs lost some of those players due to asset mismanagement and not understanding the cap. The guaranteed money to Blake and Sakic and the cap penalty for it hurt and lost them either Forsberg or Foote depending on the choice they would have made, just as one example.

You realize the likelihood of the Avs falling out of the race is practically zero?

They held down a wildcard spot missing 6 regular NHL forwards and having the worst goaltending in the league.

They aren't going to fall out of the race.

There’s a good chance the hockey gods have heard this and will react with a “challenge accepted”. By April we will have a roster with Kovalenko and Ivan as the premiere pieces

Think the Meier deal. Add some picks and prospects and you have a Rantanen deal in January. But that type of deal does nothing for where this team is at right now.

Mikko is a better player than Meier, and is healthy. Big difference. And I don’t expect that type of deal to be one to make them better in the now, but one that adds a huge influx of depth and prospect/picks.

Mikko is also on an expiring contract, which a contender would value vs a longer term commitment.

You make the trade with the idea of in 1-3 years having some of those players hit and the second window opening and/or using the assets in the summer to reload for next year.

But to be clear, I don’t think they get there. Just if they continue to be injury riddled and are not looking healthy leading into the deadline.
