I got question for the C
What's with the blatant and consistent misspelling? It's Rantanen. NEN is the most common Finnish surname suffix. N-E-N, never with any other vowel than E in the middle. You're a long time poster and there've been many "nens" along with Rantanen in the league over the years. You see the name all the time, there's no umlauts or stresses etc. You even reply to a message where it's spelled correctly.

In the same way I can't help but wonder how people misspell surnames of house hold NHL players/legends such as Brodeur ("Broduer") and Fleury ("Fluery"). And stating a typo doesn't cut it: I've never seen those names misspelled any other way - no Bordeur, Brudoeur, Felury, Fleuyr etc. It's systematic. Systematic laziness and disrespect.

In the NBA (the lone Finnish player) Markkanen gets misspelled Markannen or Markkenen frequently. It's wild...

It's not a huge deal but I just had enough when the player in question is known well enough, the poster is a long-timer, it's blatant etc.

why he spell it Rantanino?

Now do me a favor and go around and correct every single mispelt Czech name on HF.lol This is why I call him Rants more than anything.haha

Canes fan here. I think Necas will end up with more pts by end of year. Rantanen will be playing with great players, but still not Mack/Mak. I think the Colorado system fits him better because he has a player equal to his speed in Mack. I HOPE Rants beats out Necas, but I think Necas takes it.

As a Canes fan it would not be surprising for Necas to win this easily. He could be a point machine in a more open system.
He just wasn´t fitting Canes system. I think in the end both teams and both guys win from this trade. Necas is finally free with a team that suits his style of play and Rantanen is basicaly playing with his childhood buddies and he si going to be so good with Aho.

Rants production is gonna tank man. Going from Mack and makar to brindamours system. Good luck getting 13 mil plus on your next deal rants, good effin luck
Pretty premature considering he's a better player than Guentzel who was going from Crosby to "Brind'Amour's system" and yet put up the best production of his career with the Canes

On the flip side, what can Necas do playing with 2 of the Top 3 players in the world. He was already a Top 10 scorer in the league this year, not exactly playing with chopped liver as the likes of Aho/Svechnikov/Jarvis are great players in their own right, but they also aren't Mackinnon and Makar.

A fun watch for sure IMO.
I'm not sure Necas was ever really a top 10 scorer though. I mean, he was technically based on scoring list earlier in the season, but I mean I think it may have been unsustainable. He was hot at the beginning of the year and put up some points that enabled him to stick around in top 10 for awhile, but from around the end of Nov until the trade, he was 111th in scoring (perhaps just a dry spell as well and both will even out?). History doesn't show that he produced at that level before either, so hard to assume he's all of a sudden going to be that guy.

Playing with a friend sure is a bonus but other than that I don't think it's a win for Rantanen at all. Well, maybe if we assume he wants to be the top dog but I don't think we should. Seems as though he was fine with his role in the Avs, just wanted a big raise his market value would indicate.

Empty net points are worth something so I wouldn't entirely remove them, though it's true that they shouldn't be weighed as highly as points against a goaltender.

I wonder if there's a model to determine how useful the average empty net goal is in comparison to the average non-empty net goal. In fact, it might be possible to create a model that gives goals an importance rating case-by-case rather than just counting them as integers. That would be interesting to see, too.
It's obviously a lot harder to score on a goalie than an empty net but in terms of usefulness?? Empty net goal must be close to 95% win rate

Given that teams will often pull the goalie 2 goals down or more, the % of empty net goals which are game winning goals must be MUCH higher than your average goal.

I heavily concur with this. Don't put much stock into someone being among the top scorers in December if they've never been there in april, lol. It's the same with Strome in the Caps, although at least in his case maybe he could've persisted if Ovi didn't get injured.

Yeah, I don't know, my gut is telling me Rantanen's production is going to suffer away from MacKinnon and that is going to cause his next contract to be less than what he perhaps wanted. At the same time, there was probably no chance COL was going to be able to give him what he wanted....actually, that's probably for sure what's going to happen....not probably.

Except it's now late January and Necas still tied for 10th in NHL scoring, despite mostly playing with plugs in Carolina instead of Alex Ovechkin

At least CMac didn’t pull a Dubas move.

He's literally tied for 10th right now

If gets an assist or two a game I'm cool

Absolutely. I’m just saying an assist doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a better player, if it’s something like yesterday where he rings the puck around the boards to another guy who passes to Makar who picks a corner from 60 feet. Literally any NHL player can be that guy. It’s the ones he creates on his own skill that matter — and he will have those too, because he’s a good player.

I know....my point was his hot start got him there, but his production over the last 2 months has been nowhere near it. And other than this year, his career has ranged from 190th in scoring to 58th in scoring, so it somewhat suggests his hot start was more of a just a hot streak and he's coming back to normal now. Who knows, he's playing with MacKinnon now, we'll see what happens.

Both should remain uber productive and there’s definitely a world where Necas gets a MacKinnon bump - but both are still in great situations and it’s really hard to look past just how elite Rantanen is at point production - even when it seems like he isn’t going full steam. So I think to say Necas is galaxy braining this a bit when you have a track record like Rantanen’s. I also think after he shakes the initial shock of the trade, the Moose could be really motivated to prove a point.

Yeah well if his hot start continued he could realistically be leading the league in scoring still haha. Not saying I expect him to ever really do that for a full season, but idk!

Rantanen provides so much more than only points. Not too sure what Nescas provides if not scoring?

Rantanen’s size and strength is definitely a different level but I’m not sure how true this is. Moose is completely an offense only player, his defensive metrics are just as bad. He’s not a two-way player and he’s not some sort of great forchecker. Which is fine, that’s not what he’s paid for.

But neither is adding a bunch if not contributing offense. Moose is just bigger and has a better track record of being absolutely elite in that regard.

I think that this fits into the fallacy of “bigger guy must be better at other stuff”.

Did anybody here see Nečas on World Championship 2024 in Prague? I mostly watch international team and our czech league and NHL wasnt in centre of my intrest , so I was surprised by him. Of cause I randomly watched NHL too and names like Pastrňák, Zacha, Krejčí, Hertl and others, name Nečas propably was too in TV etc, but from that point, when i saw his skill, I became fan and started watching whole NHL. Finaly thats reason, why I registred here, so I can get from first hand, what world mean about czech hockey.... Funny Is, that this Martin Badweather ( that NEČAS exactly means in our language) Is from town maybe 60 miiles from me and I am also Martin. This trade malé me happy, because many experta from our country said, that Canes dont see his potential and he has not enough space for growing, So maybe now he will show, US3. Yeah And one last thing..... Sorry fór my english, I have not many chances to use it and writing Is total pain in ass, but I dont want to use translators, but rather train it. I hope Its understable And there is not many big mistakes!
