Canadiens, Oilers, Islanders

Canadiens are generally thought of as the best team ever a couple of those years.

Isles and Oilers are close - but Gretzky pushes them over the top

I voted Habs because they were more defensive minded team but Oilers right there based on few players. Isles are 3rd but not far off.

im gonna go oilers-Habs-isles.

the Hans were the better all around team, but the oilers had very good goaltending in fuhr and excellent grit mixed in with tikkanen, buddy, mactavish, messier, Dave hunter and mike k. The oilers offence would eventual overpower the Habs d and Dryden. Another factor that led me to pick oilers over the Hans is the oilers lost Gretzky and coffey and still won in 1990. And a lot of recurring oilers won again with messier and the rangers in 94.

After looking at my vote I noticed that I ranked them in reverse chronological order. So maybe there's a familiarity bias here. I definitely know Gretzky and Messier a lot more than Bossy and Trottier. And the latter guys a lot more than Dryden and Gainey.

Probably Habs-Oilers-Isles. Idk, it's hard. There were three more teams when the Oilers and Isles were winning, but the Oilers also don't have 4 in a row like the other two, and instead have the extra cup.

Isles and Oilers also specifically handed off dynasties to each other where as the Isles and Habs didn't face each other in the SCF. For me it's either the above or Oilers-Habs-Isles, but all close.

I rank Habs and Islanders as the top two as four in a row is extremely difficult. Even prime Oilers couldn't do that.

Islanders come on top as they had their run when WHA teams were added and there was no competing league.

I think I have to give the slightest of nods to the Islanders. They were the first required to win four rounds (they didn’t get a first round bye for winning the division like Montreal did), win 15 games, and when they bowed out after 4 straight, it was again in the Finals. They won a staggering 19 playoff rounds in a row.

It’s a tough call. There’s a compelling case for any of the three. I feel like the Islanders are sometimes relegated by some as just some obstacle in Gretzky and the Oilers way.

Reminds me in a way on a smaller scale of Celtics and Lakers going ham in the 80s, the Pistons losing in 7 to the Lakers and then winning two in a row, while Jordan and the Bulls chipped away at them 1 extra game at a time before dethroning them. The Pistons don’t seem to be remembered anymore for how great they were, and while certainly not a dynasty, they’ve been subjected as some sort of a footnote as being just an obstacle for the Bulls.

Again, really tough call. I guess I’m wanting to put some respect on the Islanders. 5 straight Finals, 4 cups in a row, 60 wins during the 4 peat, and 72 in those 5 years is really impressive.
