The Beatles

There isn't a gap within the top 5, all are neck and neck for me, just depends on how I'm feeling atm. Abbey Road was first for a few years but atm it's 4th. In a few months maybe it'll be 1st again.

Tier 1

1- Revolver- Paul and John were at the top of their games on this one, and Harrison contributed 3 good songs too. From Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows to the underrated For No One, and She Said She Said.

2- Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band- The first few times I listened to it I felt it was overrated. That is had a great start and finish, but now the middle section is my favorite. Just flows together perfectly and always hits the spot.

3- Rubber Soul- Lennon really killed it on this one. In My Life is my favorite Beatles song. Help was them beginning to change as a band, and Rubber Soul was their first masterpiece.

4- Abbey Road- I wanted to put it first, but I have been listening to the other Beatles albums more lately. It's great and doesn't have a weakness, besides maybe Maxwell's Silver Hammer. The Medley at the end is one of the best things the band ever did.

5- White Album- Huge cluster ****, but it's awesome. Can't go wrong with 30 Beatles songs. Some really odd ones but that's what makes the White Album what it is. Also has some of my favs.

Tier 2

6- Magical Mystery Tour- Collection of songs they recorded before and after Pepper. Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, etc. It sounds more like a greatest hits album than anything else to me.

7- Help- This is where you can tell they started to change. From Beatlemania to songwriters.

8- A Hard Days Night- Fun album. The best album from the Beatlemania period.

9- Let it Be- Has some very good songs, but it lacks what the other great Beatles albums had. Still a good listen from time to time.

Tier 3

10- Please Please Me- The first one. I saw her standing there, twist and shout, etc.

11- Beatles For Sale- Some solid songs, but also had a lot of songs I don't care for, especially cover songs.

12- With the Beatles- Pretty much the same as BFS. Not a bad album by any means, but compared to their other stuff it doesn't stack up at all.

Didn't include any of their pre-Gordon indie tapes since both fact that they're mostly songs that were released on Gordon or other later records and that I haven't actually heard them before. Also, decided to put the BLAM/en release(s) separate just so I'd have an even 10.

If you're looking to get acquainted with their music, Lifes Rich Pageant is probably the album to start with. It's not their greatest album, but the most representative of them as its the bridge from the early college rock days to their arena rock era. I absolutely love Murmur and Reckoning, but they need to grow on you. They don't start to sink in until about the 10th or 20th listen, but they're worth the wait.

Just picked up their Unplugged double-CD recently. The '91 performance is outstanding. The band is having a good time, Stipe's voice is at its best, and all the songs adapt perfectly to the unplugged format. The 2001 set however, is an uninspired, boring chore to listen to.

I will have to check that out. I still don't love Reckoning as much as other R.E.M. fans but I still like it alright.

Top tier for me is Murmur, Fables of the Reconstruction, Lifes Rich Pageant, with Document just a step below.

I can't put New Adventures in the top tier. And, I like Out of Time more than the others in your 2nd tier. The first four pretty much got me through college, (along with the Replacements.) And, I am more fond of Reckoning than Murmur, since Reckoning was my introduction to REM. Automatic is still their high-water mark, IMO.

I don't really consider the Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, or the Division Bell "true" Pink Floyd albums; they're closer to Waters/Gilmour solo projects.

It's a contest between Chris Liberator, Inigo Kennedy, CJ Bolland and Chris McCormack. The worst part is that none of them have released an album, only singles or if they have albums, it has been part of collaborations. *sigh*

For some reason I can't figure out how I'd rank Jawbreaker's, and Bad Religion has way too many of the same album to do.

Jeff Beck:

1. Wired - Most people would say Blow by Blow at #1, but Wired is more diverse and adventurous IMO. So much texture and depth, but with the vibe of a live, one-off performance that is being half-improvised right in front of you. 17/5
2. Blow by Blow - A true classic. This is one of those albums where if you hear it on vinyl you'll understand the whole of your existence for the next 45 minutes. 14/5
3. Truth - If the lineup for this album had stayed together, they would've rivaled Zeppelin. Lots of bluesy proto-metal goodness going on here. 5/5
4. Rough and Ready - People don't know about this one as much as some of his other (and IMO lesser albums listed below) but it's a fantastic melting pot of jazz fusion, soul, R&B, funk. Great, great album that's got danceable grooves and virtuosity from all the players. 4.327/5
5. Beck-Ola - Technically a better constructed record than Truth with the same lineup, just not quite as inspired. 4.1/5
6. Who Else - Really interesting record with a techno base, but lots of diverse influences coming to bear - Middle Eastern grooves, some funk, old blues, and something that sounds like an Irish drinking song. I like this album a lot. 3.91/5
7. There and Back - Tries to be Wired part 2, succeeds on the whole but the backing band is too prominent and Beck's guitar is not. 3.8/5
8. Jeff Beck Group - Poppy in a good way, but lacks the attitude/snarl of the first lineup. It's almost a little too slickly-produced. 3.768/5
9. Beck Bogert Appice - Like the songs, love Beck's performances for the most part but the backing band was not up to snuff. 3.37/5
10. Live with Jan Hammer - Live album, captures Beck in his prime and playing his best material, but like a lot of live albums the recording is just kind of blah. It sounds like they put the microphones 100 feet away. 3.14159265359/5
11. Emotion and Commotion - I believe this is the last thing he recorded. I like it OK, it just doesn't grab me. 3.08/5
12. Guitar Shop - This is a strange album. Very 80's. in a bad way. The playing is good, it just sounds really dated. 2.875/5
13. Frankie's House - Impressionistic movie score. Lots of nice soundscapes but it's more mood/background music than something you would actually want to sit down and listen to. 2.63/5
14. Flash - Regarded as one of his worst, and it's pretty bad in some places, but it's really really good in a few places. I listen to it every once in a while. 2.27/5

There are a few Jeff Beck albums I don't own so I'm not going to list those but I am told that You Had it Coming and Jeff are solid albums.

Not my favorite, but I'm going through a phase right now...

Jackson Browne:
1. Late for the Sky
2. For Everyman
3. Jackson Browne (Saturate Before Using)
4. The Pretender
5. Running on Empty

The rest I don't care as much about.
