I want to take the temperature as we sit right this very moment, middle of June of what we feel our chances are vs the Canes in our play-in series vs Carolina.

Personally I think it's a 50/50 proposition for us as tho we had an overwhelming regular season advantage vs the Canes and we seemingly have their number, they will now have Hamilton back and a newly acquired Trocheck added to a very talented team.

Should be a great series that IMO could go either way!!

Rangers in 4. Carolina has suspect goaltending and having Sheshterkin in goal is almost the same as having a brick wall in net.

I anticipate the Rangers trying to ramp of their offense with the Canes focusing on defense while patiently waiting to capitalize on Ranger mistakes.

Would be fun to see the Rangers offense click and their young goalie be hot but Carolina has that playoff experience and discipline usually results in fewer mistakes.

Carolina in 4

(If it goes 5 i like the Rangers b/c i assume they’ve been disciplined enough to win two games rather than steal one)

Play off experience matters. Canes in 5
Kreider, Fast, Staal, and Smith all have extensive playoff experience. Staal has multiple ECF runs and a Cup run. Kreider and Fast also played in a Cup. Panarin and Zibanejad have about 30 games each. Even Strome, McKegg, and Haley have multiple series under their belts. We obviously have a bunch of first and second year guys that don't have the experience, but we have plenty of it throughout the lineup. Carolina's 15-game run is the extent of playoff experience for the homegrown guys. Of course they have the ageless Justin Williams, Nino Niederreiter who has never been a great playoff performer, and Jordan Staal (who has been once in the last eight years), but they don't exactly have a bunch of playoff-tested veterans.

They do have an edge in terms of experience, but I can't see how that alone is going to push them over the top. If experience was such a huge factor, Carolina would have been blown out of the water by Washington last year and probably would have lost to the Islanders.

If we start any goalie other than the one that plays best in training camp, we f***ed up.

Youngblood vs legend is all fine and dandy, but in this situation just give me the hot hand.

If Games 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 are back-to-backs I think you have to at least consider using both.

We’ve owned them during the regular season. Drop one somewhere and win the series.

Carolina has a very deep blue line. Dougie Hamilton (coming off a great season), Vatanen, Pesce, TVR, Skjei, Slavin, Fleury, Edmunson, Gardiner. It'll be interesting to see who they dress.

They have scoring in Svech, Trochek, Tervanen and Aho. They have veteran leadership in Justin Williams, Niederreiter, Staal and Dzingel.

And unfortunately for us, the fans won't be there because whenever we go down to Carolina, there are always more Rangers fans than Hurricanes fans in attendance.

It's definitely going to be a good matchup and a really tough test for our very young team. We need to stay out of the penalty box in order to have a chance, but I do think we advance.
