The whole Soviet collapse made it a complicated issue. A similar issue with the collapse of Yugoslavia a few years later with players who could pick nationalities regardless of where they were born etc, which country to represent in sports or other events.

It definitely did. Pretty interesting time.

Funny story: In football, the Irish and Northern Irish football association have a rule in place for players that allows them to choose which country to play for, regardless of where they were born, but once they pick one they cannot switch (FIFA doesn't allow switching if a player has appeared in an official men's game)

I remember Nedved playing for Canada in the Olympics. That was weird.

That was actually beautiful if you know the backstory.

He defected from Czechoslovakia during a junior tournament in Calgary in 1988, was picked up in the middle of the night by, I think a Seattle Thunderbirds representative, after he climbed out of his hotel room window.

He played in the WHL, and 5 years after defecting he was granted Canadian citizenship in 1993, which is also the reason why he played with no 93, because his new life started that year.

I know the story.

It was still weird watching him play for team Canada, especially by '94 when the world seemed (and was, I suppose) so drastically different than it was just a few years before.

Yeah I can't imagine. Probably a good deal of optimism mixed in with the chaos, but chaotic nonetheless.

You Europeans really know how to survive some ****, don't you?

I grew up in the Netherlands so there's not a lot of surviving involved for me but yeah... Anything east of Vienna was chaos the last 60-70 years

Who is better Rykov or Hajek?
From what I have read, Hajek has the higher upside and I think that is reflected in their draft positions. If everything goes right, I think he has the chance to be a mainstay on the 2nd pairing. Rykov strikes me as defensive 3rd pairing guy who has the ability to slot in on the 2nd pairing in a pinch.

I once almost rode a bicycle into a Jordaan canal so I consider the Netherlands to be a dangerous place and all residents to be survivors.

I have no idea what this means but it sounds interesting. :)

But we are getting off topic

It's almost shocking how many people want to buyout players now so we have cap space we dont need. I guess their strategy for building s Reiner is to have their cap hit when we need the cap later? Almost shocking. But I know where I am
