Great news. Pleasantly surprised.
We should trade Claesson for another 2020 7th.

Skjei to the Jets for Trouba would make this even more appealing to him...I think Rykov looks at the left side of the Rangers and thinks--'wow, there are vets who could block me'. But anyway I think he needed to get into the mix as soon as possible because K'Andre and Tarmo might be coming next year and I think he risked getting moved along again because of too many numbers.
Left D is stacked as it is--Skjei, Staal, Smith, maybe Claesson (if we sign him again), Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren, Bigras could all legitimately play next year. To me I'd guess it points to Smith getting bought out (because we won't find a trade partner) and Claesson not being signed.
I'd expect Skjei and Staal both to be regulars again. Skjei is at least for the moment our best all situation defenseman. If Smith and Claesson are out of the picture Rykov and Hajek would be the most likely candidates to fight it out for the bottom pairing LD spot and the 7D--perhaps displacing Staal as the season moves along.
I agree with this but @bobbop has it as pretty much a mortal lock that he’ll be bought out.I wouldn't get rid of Smith just yet. He showed he was a good team guy, did whatever they asked of him. He has snarl and that's one thing Quinn values. He's also decent, but not great insurance should some of these guys need more time. We aren't cap bound so there's no rush. If he's fine wkth flipping from D to W and being sat occasionally, I don't see why we would buy him out right now.

Didn't he even get scratched in a playoff game?I have great enjoyment in that the first trade in NYR/NJD history and Grabner did absolutely **** all for them lol
As I said, I agree. Not sure that's a smart move - the cap savings (2Y vs. 4Y buyout) isn't a whole lot. Better off keeping him - especially if you're in the camp that the Rangers are going to suck for the next two years.

He can be waived, there really is no reason to buy him out.
Now Staal otoh...
Brady is going
Assuming Hajek is on the short list for the NHL roster (which I think he is), and all RFAs are signed, we're looking at 10 D on the roster.
Skjei, Shattenkirk, Staal, Smith, Pionk, ADA, Fox, Hajek, Rykov, Claesson
Waiver exempt - Hajek, Fox, Rykov
...something's gotta give.
I don’t want Smith taking a roster spot on the Rangers OR the Wolfpack, especially now that Rykov is signed. In every way, the youth in the organization would be better served with getting Smith out of it. To me, it’s well worth the $1m in dead cap we’d have in 21-22 and 22-23.
Fair point, but doesn't that apply to Staal as well? With the added Caveat that he is going to play if he's still here?
Yep. Staal's buyout for next season is $2.9M as opposed to Smith which would be ~$971k. Then the following year it's $3.7M compared to ~$3.15M, but then the final two years are like...$1.2M compared to ~$1.15MWell, it only applies to one of them because I don’t see them buying out two D... and I don’t see them buying out Staal at all.
Not to mention that Staal’s buyout is 3x more expensive for next season.
Why not re-sign Claesson? He’s be a fine 7D who can play in case of an injury on a road trip and he won’t make much. Better than a kid sitting.

If you don't qualify Claesson and send down Rykov that makes 8.
But you figure Lindgren is in the mix as well. Smith is waiveable, but the coaches like him.
Ideally, Pionk is moved, Staal is the extra and Smith is waived.
Skjei-Shattenkirk
Hajek-ADA
Rykov/Lindgren-Fox
Staal.
Thats if we don't add another RHD. If we do, replace Shattenkirk with that guy.

He probably won't even want to sign here. Too many kids they just got who are likely to pass him on the depth chart.
Claesson is an RFA. If we give him a QO, he won't have many options unless we trade his rights.
