I think Rykov looks at the left side of the Rangers and thinks--'wow, there are vets who could block me'. But anyway I think he needed to get into the mix as soon as possible because K'Andre and Tarmo might be coming next year and I think he risked getting moved along again because of too many numbers.

Left D is stacked as it is--Skjei, Staal, Smith, maybe Claesson (if we sign him again), Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren, Bigras could all legitimately play next year. To me I'd guess it points to Smith getting bought out (because we won't find a trade partner) and Claesson not being signed.

I'd expect Skjei and Staal both to be regulars again. Skjei is at least for the moment our best all situation defenseman. If Smith and Claesson are out of the picture Rykov and Hajek would be the most likely candidates to fight it out for the bottom pairing LD spot and the 7D--perhaps displacing Staal as the season moves along.
Skjei to the Jets for Trouba would make this even more appealing to him... :)

I wouldn't get rid of Smith just yet. He showed he was a good team guy, did whatever they asked of him. He has snarl and that's one thing Quinn values. He's also decent, but not great insurance should some of these guys need more time. We aren't cap bound so there's no rush. If he's fine wkth flipping from D to W and being sat occasionally, I don't see why we would buy him out right now.
I agree with this but @bobbop has it as pretty much a mortal lock that he’ll be bought out.

Hopefully Pionk is moved at the draft and one or two of Staal, Shatty and Smith are traded (likely with retention). I don't think we should be buying anyone out, because cap space is not an issue and I'd prefer to avoid long-term cap implications.

He can be waived, there really is no reason to buy him out.

Now Staal otoh...

I don’t want Smith taking a roster spot on the Rangers OR the Wolfpack, especially now that Rykov is signed. In every way, the youth in the organization would be better served with getting Smith out of it. To me, it’s well worth the $1m in dead cap we’d have in 21-22 and 22-23.

Assuming Hajek is on the short list for the NHL roster (which I think he is), and all RFAs are signed, we're looking at 10 D on the roster.

Skjei, Shattenkirk, Staal, Smith, Pionk, ADA, Fox, Hajek, Rykov, Claesson

Waiver exempt - Hajek, Fox, Rykov

...something's gotta give.

I don't think claesson is resigned. that leaves you with 9 guys and we probably carry 8 guys...kids aren't going to be kept to in ny to sit in the press box, they need to play. so if fox/hajek/rykov aren't in the top 6 they will be sent down (hopefully rykov agrees to sometime in the ahl and doesn't bail immediately)...if the kids make the roster then smith gets buried or someone gets traded.

but I don't think you need to make a move before camp and see which kids force their way into the lineup.

i'd love nothing more than to get rid of staal, smith and/or shattenkirk tomorrow but I don't think the numbers force us to make a panic move before camp

Fair point, but doesn't that apply to Staal as well? With the added Caveat that he is going to play if he's still here?

Well, it only applies to one of them because I don’t see them buying out two D... and I don’t see them buying out Staal at all.

Not to mention that Staal’s buyout is 3x more expensive for next season.

Yep. Staal's buyout for next season is $2.9M as opposed to Smith which would be ~$971k. Then the following year it's $3.7M compared to ~$3.15M, but then the final two years are like...$1.2M compared to ~$1.15M

Why not re-sign Claesson? He’s be a fine 7D who can play in case of an injury on a road trip and he won’t make much. Better than a kid sitting.

I think ideally a lot of people are viewing either Staal or Smith as the 7th defenseman.

If not, certainly you could use him or maybe Bigras.

I think this team is going to have a shit ton of options going forward. I don't think anyone who is not a lock to make this roster should play more than 60 NHL games this year. They need to lock down who is going to be the Hartford coach if they haven't already. That coach needs to be a Quinn clone in terms of philosophy and strategy. Someone who believes it and employs the same stuff. When A player does well, he gets the call up and shows what he learned. If he's not doing well, he goes down and gets back to the basics at a lower level. If a guy is getting bottom pair minutes here, you send him down to get top pair minutes in Hartford for a few games, then bring him back. There should be a steady rotation and shuttle of guys back and forth all season until a guy absolutely makes it impossible to go out of the lineup. This plan would serve well for development as well as potentially showcasing guys for when the eventual lineup is set and there are odd men out.

If you don't qualify Claesson and send down Rykov that makes 8.

But you figure Lindgren is in the mix as well. Smith is waiveable, but the coaches like him.

Ideally, Pionk is moved, Staal is the extra and Smith is waived.

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Hajek-ADA
Rykov/Lindgren-Fox

Staal.

Thats if we don't add another RHD. If we do, replace Shattenkirk with that guy.

Lindgren seems more of a dark horse than Rykov or Hajek but the Rangers did bring Lindgren up twice last year. He's pretty much a defensive guy but he's paired with Adam Fox in two successive WJC's and he's not bad moving the puck and he's also more physical and meaner than either Rykov or Hajek. If he has a great camp he might stick around.

how many guys do you need? you've already got skjei & staal in the lineup along with 1 kid and smith as a spare on the left side.

He probably won't even want to sign here. Too many kids they just got who are likely to pass him on the depth chart.

Claesson is an RFA. If we give him a QO, he won't have many options unless we trade his rights.

ah good point. for some reason i was thinking he was a UFA. we'll definitely give him a QO and then look to trade him if needed, we won't just let him walk away
