Good butterfly goaltender, with a decent glove hand and good potential I feel at the NHL level. I like Biron's ability to play the puck, I think it helps our team out a lot, but he won't be around forever.

I stand by this:

Talbot has a ridiculous SV% of .918. Ridiculous because Hartford is the worst defensive team in the AHL. It's just as unbelievable that on this team his GAA is only 2.56 considering that he's second in the league in shots-against, many of which come from straight up blown defense or inability to clear the crease. Talbot has been the best player on the team in terms of consistent performances. In any given week, some hot player can be more valuable to the team, but if you count the play from October until today, he's been the team's MVP.

Without Talbot, the Whale would already be out of playoff contention. Miss is doing ok as a backup and Stajcer got much better in the ECHL, but if we had to rely on that duo, we'd be last in the AHL right now.

Don't know much about him, but I hear he does well in the AHL. Regardless it would be awesome to see this sweet mask.

what has been holding him back as NHL backup? he seems to do well in the AHL and is only 25 and will be 26 in june

He's a late bloomer who took an unconventional route. He went to college in Alabama... not Wisconsin, Minn, Michigan or Notre Dame... not even Yale or Clarkson... Alabama!

In his first pro season, he was only an ok backup, even getting sent down to the ECHL for a couple of games. Then last year he split duties with Ocho, but was mostly regarded as the backup, though he did play very solid hockey.

This is his first year as an AHL starter.

The one thing about Talbot is that he's gotten better every year. He's significantly better this year than he was last year when he was significantly better than the year before.

Same thing in college. In his freshman year, he was rocked on almost daily basis, though in his defense, his team was just awful and despite having a GAA of 4.63, he actually played solid hockey.

Next year, he reduced goals against by almost 2 goals per game to 2.95 while the team in front of him continued to stink and give him no support.

By his junior and final season, he was the best player in CHA putting up tremendous numbers, getting his team to NCAA and almost stealing a victory against the #1-ranked Miami-Ohio. Playing against the best college hockey team, he was the best player on the ice.

And then he only continued improving, as I described earlier. I hope he doesn't plateau now. It would suck if he made all this improvement only to stop just short of the NHL. But I don't think he will. Another small step forward and he'll be an NHLer.

The fact that the Rangers gave him a one-way deal is a sign of just what I have been saying for 2 months: there is real hope that he will soon be an NHL goalie.

Notice that when I said this the first time earlier in the season, I was literally mocked and made fun of on this forum. Not so funny anymore! Go get 'em, Cam!

So if I understand this right teams have 900 k they can have in the Ahl under one way deals and not count on the cap? So Haley next yr for example, biron is a ufa after next yr so can can earn the job

Yard Barker left a stupid comment saying this is bad news for Stajcer. How? He's not even an AHL backup, he's in the ECHL. Even if he some day manages to rise up in the organization, it won't be during the 2 years of Talbot's contract.

Speaking of which, the deal is:

Year 1: $550 two-way.
Year 2: $575 one-way.

So the early expectation is that he'll be our backup when Biron leaves after next year.

Good! I just put him 12th in my prospect list yesterday. I feel like he's criminally underrated around here. He's having a very good season with an often times terrible defense in front of him.

Organization must have a lot of faith in him to develop into a solid NHL backup. I've been wondering why they haven't tried to draft a goalie with good upside the last few years. Apparently they have their man.

i wanna see Talbot have another good year next year in the AHL..didn't people think that about Chad Johnson? :shakehead Rangers still need to draft a goalie.. Rangers havent had a good track record for drafting goalies after they drated Lundqvist in 2000... Montoya is an ok backup but nothing more but they should have had more skill in their former 6th overall draft pick :amazed:

I agree. They definitely should be looking at drafting a goalie. Apparently though they haven't felt the need as of yet. I think if they view Talbot as the next backup they will try and take one this year or next.

I too, wouldn't mind spending a mid-round pick (3rd or 4th) on a goalie this season and start developing him immediately.

Lundqvist isn't going to be around forever

Sometimes I sit back and think how spoiled I've been, knowing that every year it's a constant going into the season who the starting goalie is going to be, and there's no doubt about how he's going to perform either. Like the Giants and Eli Manning. It's going to be a sad day in the life of silverfish when both those guys are gone.

Remember the Dunham days? The Blackburn ( :( ) days? The Markkanen, Valiquette, Laarbera, McLennan days?

Lundqvist was a godsend.

I think the Rangers have been trying to draft a goalie. There were serious rumors that they had their sights set on Vasilevsky at this past draft as their 1st rounder.

I feel we should draft a goalie every year with a 5th to 7th rd pick. Lots of good goalies in the NHLthat were late round picks.

Late round picks are happy to get to the NHL at 25/26. First rounders want to get to the big show on a fast track. Goalies historically take longer to develop. That's why I feel we should take a goalie every year with a late round pick. If he doesn't earn the ELC after his first two years or four years after NCAA, no big deal, Most late round picks bust anyway. But if we continue with this practice, Maybe at some point we will hit on the Next Henrik Lundquist.

I don't think there is a need to do this. Would much rather sign a college starter like Ben Scrivens types and hope one of them pan out eventually. Henrik is here for 8-12 more years imo.
