Vargas was really well thought of in Minnesota. My old friend used to work in that department and spoke very highly of him. Not sure whether he was cut loose or if he left of his own volition but there’s been a lot of front office churn there in the last few years.so based on track record, etc, what does everyone think?
upgrade?
downgrade?
more of the same?
worries/no worries?
I know it's not common for this info to come out publicly but does anyone know any of these scouts' "best draft choices ever?" or maybe what regions did they cover so we can maybe surmise what picks their organizations had a hand in?

There are two things hockey fans hate:So we hired three guys who lost their previous job due to ineptitude. Great job.
Oof, what a way to start off your career drafting AJ Thelen. Biggest flop of that draft year but rounding out the resume with Haula, Zucker, Tuch, Greenway, Kunin, and Boldy. Even still, VERY UNEXCITED. Thanks for digging up that list.Doug Gasper:

A.J. Thelen's greatest claim to fame is causing me to still mess up Adam Thielen's name 18 years later.Oof, what a way to start off your career drafting AJ Thelen. You can't judge scouts by simply listing players. In my opinion you have no idea how much pull they had in the room, who they prioritized, were they overruled on a player and why, team needs etc etc.
That said, the list isn't terribly exciting, to say the least, and the answers to the questions can even make them look worse. Too many variables that go into scouting/drafting a player, you can never accurately tell how good or bad a scout really is. So who knows, we can be pleasantly surprised 3-5 years from now when the results start kicking in. Hopefully that is the case.
I just hope the Rangers continue to invest considerably in the scouting, infrastructure and player development as there is no cap to worry about there. I even think the latter two are even more important.
Garth Joy was a scout with the Avs. Senior pro scout. Assistant director of pro personnel. Joy replaces Kevin Maxwell.
Andy Schneider was an amateur scout with the Devils. Head of Canadian Hockey League scouting. Schneider replaces Chris Morehouse.
So were these guys involved with the recent 2022 draft?
We got RIPPED OFF.Chris MacFarland gets promoted to General Manager in Colorado. He hires Kevin McDonald of the Blues as his AGM. McDonald was the GM of the Blues AHL team. Blues hire Kevin Maxwell as their AHL GM. The Rangers hire Garth Joy from the Avalanche to replace Maxwell. Three team trade.
I have read good things about Joy. The Avs sucked for a while. They were good. They were bad. They are good. Joy was there for the complete cycle. We got RIPPED OFF.
As far as I've gathered as an Avs fan as well, he was the head of amateur scouting which was the backbone to the success of Colorado. This Colorado team wasn't built through the draft (apart from the top players), it was built via trades on smart FA signings. A start difference to say Tampa who seemingly find diamonds every year in the later rounds and have used those with their run.I have read good things about Joy. The Avs sucked for a while. Joy ran the pro scouting department with Terry Martin. The Avalanche were MacKonnon, Landeskog, Duchene and Rantanen. They had Johnson and Barrie on D. They had no depth. They made some really good trades. Joy had a role in advising Sakic on those players. The Duchene trade brought back Girard and the pick used for Byram. The two other young players in that trade haven't made it. Bowers and Kamenev. The Barrie and Kerfoot for Kadri was an excellent trade. Colorado retained 50% of Barrie. Two second picks for Toews. A two and three for Burakovsky. They signed Nchushkin after the Stars bought him out. Lehkonen was an excellent addition. As far as I've gathered as an Avs fan as well, he was the head of amateur scouting which was the backbone to the success of Colorado.
