I would argue that Hank is being overpaid by potentially as much as $1 mil per year, maybe even a bit more. I'm sure that will be an unpopular opinion, but there it is. Doesn't mean I'm not happy he is locked up. Just not thrilled about the $$ or term, as I said at the outset.

If you had bothered to read (or remember) my original post responding to you, I specifically said that I wasn't directly answering your question. In fact, I explicitly said that it wasn't a possibility for Quick to play for NYR. My point in bringing up his contract all along was to make the point that there are elite goalies in this league who are carrying cap hits significantly less than Hank's new contract - and will be carrying them for a long period of time moving forward. That will inherently give those teams a leg up and put NYR at a disadvantage.

No, I'm not. See above. And I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about that last point. I have admitted the two contracts are not perfectly comparable - but I think the two contracts are similar enough to be used to make the point I've been making.

Except since the two contracts were signed under different CBAs AND there was a clause put in the current CBA that specifically forbids constructing contracts such as Quick's, they're not comparable.

There are people who are worse at my job or comparable to me that make more, there are some that make less... there are other factors that determine salary... it's all part of the democracy you and I are lucky enough to live in.

Could the contract be for less? Of course. It could also be more. If Hank plays as well as he has in the past, no one will ***** about it.

There's loyalty at play here as well. He's homegrown and has given a lot to this team, to this town, etc. He can be overpaid a bit and it's fine. What we need to do is to stop overpaying those who don't deserve it, and stop doing it by a vast margin.

Happy Hank got signed.

Upset that he didn't even take the slightest paycut to help the franchise out.

Maybe he gave them an ultimatum?

Why should he?

Inferior players like Gomez, Nash, Drury and Gaborik have made more money in the NYR tenure than the team MVP comparing year to year.

This team is lacking with top defence lines, so i think they need goalie who can step up when is needed.
Price is affected by many things, firstly how G is important to team...Rangers who dont have stellar offence with good G/G stats, they need good goalie who can shut down opponents shots, and give his team a chance to score.

2013-14 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2014-15 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2015-16 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0

2022-23 $2,500,000 $2,500,000 $0

Quick's contract.

I would now like to direct everyone to the last three years of that contract. See those? yeah, they're called dummy years. They're there for the sole purpose of bringing the overall cap hit down.

I would now like to direct everyone to the new CBA, which specifically prohibits drastic salary changes like this from year to year.

So unless you people were expecting a contract which didn't meet the CBA requirements, get over the cap hit already. Without those three years at the end, Quick's cap hit would be 1.2 million over what it is now.
That's not that far off a legal contract. To make it a legal contract:
2014 7,000,000
2015 7,000,000
2016 7,000,000
2017 7,000,000
2018 7,000,000
2019 7,000,000
2020 7,000,000
2021 4,550,000
2022 3,500,000
2023 3,500,000
Cap hit would be $6.055 million

nope, see my edit. Still too many years, 10 year contracts are no longer allowed. You would have to absorb the last 2 years into two prior years

That's still an illegal contract. 8 years max. Take out the last two years and tell me what you get then.

2022-23 $3,000,000 $3,000,000 $0 $0 $8,700,000 $8,700,000
2023-24 $3,000,000 $3,000,000 $0 $0 $8,700,000 $8,700,000

Crosby's last 3 years of his contract look like this. He gets $9 million the year prior. Gets 12 million right now. Again, also illegal under the new CBA.

And his infatuation with the number 87 certainly doesn't help.

2013-14 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0

What is wrong with y'all, this is Rangerstown! No place for logic here! :sarcasm:

ANd i'm loling my ass off at Cindy's 87 obsession... must be a superstition of his

QUicks caphit if it was only those 6 years is 7M, and personally quick is just better than average. Not a superstar goalie... he got hot 2 playoffs ago, that's why he did what he did... Now lets break down the $$$!

THe rules state no more than 35% variance from year to year, and no more than 50% of the highest salary paid over the term... FOr sake of simplicity, we'll modify ONLY the dummy years of Quicks contract...

Old CBA Rules:
2013-14 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2014-15 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2015-16 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2016-17 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2017-18 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2018-19 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2019-20 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2020-21 $3,500,000 $3,500,000 $0
2021-22 $3,000,000 $3,000,000 $0
2022-23 $2,500,000 $2,500,000 $0

Total Paid: $58M / 10 years
AAV: $5.8M

Now lets remember that Quick is on a 10 year contract which is no longer permitted, and then factor % variance rules

Under new CBA rules:
2013-14 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0
2014-15 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0
2015-16 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2016-17 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2017-18 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2018-19 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2020-21 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0
2021-22 $6,000,000 $6,000,000 $0

Total paid: $58M / 8 years (Max allowed for currently owned free agent)
AAV: $7.25M
Comapred to Lundqvist: $1.25M per year difference

You could further complicate this looking at it if Quick was to be obtained by NYR, in which the max is 7 years (since some are claiming Quick would be a better option with this "awesome" cap hit of his)

Under new CBA rules if NYR could obtain Quick:

2013-14 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0
2014-15 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0
2015-16 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0
2016-17 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0
2017-18 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0
2018-19 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0
2020-21 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0

Total Paid: $58M / 7 years
AAV: $8.28M
Compared to Lundqvist: $0.22M, a mere $220,000...

Now, stop crying about caphit. Lets enhjoy the fact that we have a solid netminder for years to come... imagine if we had Fluery or Nebakov :o

Don't yell at me.

Still, Quick has to play from age 34-37 making 2.5M to 3.5Mm where Lundqvist will be earning peak dolla.

But the cap hit is the important part not the actual salary. I don't give a good ******* how much real money the guy is getting paid.

The he should take that up with his agent who let the Kings tack on the dummy years which were legal back then. They're not legal anymore. So why even compare them?

see my repost. did all the math
Good work. Maybe if people saw your post, they's stop *****ing.

Probably not, though.

Good. I'm hoping that Lundqvist's shaky play this year can be attributed to the contract negotiations being a distraction. Now that he's signed, he can get back to being one of the leagues best goalies every night. The Rangers need him to be the best because Sather can't figure out what to do with the rest of the team.

I am really looking forward to the posts in the GDTs after he lets in a bad goal:

"LOL 8.5 mil!"

"Henrik Redden!"

"Way to earn your paycheck, Hank!"

"Overpaid scrub back-up trash."

I'm ecstatic he's signed. He's been a bit off this year. Still one of the top 5 goal tenders in the world.

I know everyone is thinking about cap implications, and how Hank will progress/regress over the next seven years...but count me as one person who isn't thinking about any of that right now, but is just giddy with happiness that perhaps the greatest goalie in our history will (most likely) play with the Rangers for the rest of his career. Can't wipe the smile off my face if I tried.
